New 10th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote

Tell me which company delivers the sonic screwdriver around the world?
I know that soon the BBC Australia already have to deliver around the world.

Most of the retailers listed on our website (Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control) will deliver all over the world, but please check with them if their websites aren't clear about delivering to your particular country.

1) One of the two sonics are tighter than the other, where the slider is tough to push open or close. The other, when fully opened up, sits loosely and rattles. I'm not sure which is supposed to be right?

There is a bit of variation between the sonics in production - the tighter one should loosen up a bit over time. If you have any worries, please email us at sonic@thewandcompany.com and we'd be glad to help.

2) One of the two had a highly knicked up emitter. The second one is pristine and clean. Who should I address for the replacement? I purchased both from BBC America.

The nicked emitter doesn't sound good at all - I'm really sorry about that. Please email us a couple of photos (again to sonic@thewandcompany.com) and we'll get a replacement sorted out for you.

I would suggest contacting BBC America about the damage since they handled your order and payment. They'll likely have some allotted for replacements.

BBC America are actually still short of stock, as I mentioned in post #635 yesterday, so they probably don't have any sonics set aside for replacements. However, we're very happy to deal with any issues ourselves - it's very helpful for us to get the feedback directly and to see any problems first-hand, so we can work with our factory to avoid any such issues recurring in the next few weeks' production.

Cheers,

Richard

I stand corrected! That's some great service right there. Kudos, Richard!

Amazing. The lengths that you are taking to make sure your customers happy.

First you had to listen to all of us go on about the screen accuracy, now you are personally answering all of our shipping issues.

Richard I think the entire RPF needs to take you and your crew for drinks. :)

Hey Richard -

Thanks so much! I'm glad I asked before I contacted the wrong people.

I am very impressed with your customer service and professionalism. I'm sure we're all thankful that you guys are top notch people!

I've said it before but you and TWC really are knocking it out of the park on this one. Way to go! I hope the entire team knows how much we truly appreciate the hard work you've all put in to bring this thing to market.

Thanks guys, for all your support and encouragement - we really do appreciate it. I hope you all have a very good weekend.

And mine has shipped!
I will probably buy another when another batch is made that way the teeth will be correct. :D

Just received mine in the post. WOW! Its pretty nice.

It works a treat and looks great, especially with the box and the stand.

However, something I've noticed is that the aluminium scratches easily, and the weight of it (being so light) does make it feel quite cheap compared to an MFX or others. I think a full metal one would have been nicer, but then again, the cost would be greater and the crackle wouldn't have been so accurate.

The weight of an MFX sonic is 104g. The weight of the wand company's sonic is 45g.

Here are some images of the sonic (note the colour on the handle is much darker than what you will receive, Im in the middle of highlighting the cracks and haven't yet finished it). The Sonic's: bottom is an MFX, the middle: a Remote, and the top: a Rassilon.

According to the wand company, their version is only 5g lighter than the original. It may feel a bit fake, but just think you're holding almost the same weight as Tennant did.

The MFX one is mainly brass which makes it heavier (not accurate to the prop which was nearly all aluminium), but after getting used to the weight of the MFX version, the remote came as a bit of a shock! I just think that a bit more weight would make it feel as if it was the real prop, rather than just a remote.

Hmm... fair enough.

Received my Sonic! Super excited. Loved it right as I opened it. Mine is a little quiet though, but still manageable. Great job on the whole thing!

I know what you mean about the weight. I was shocked when I picked up David Tennant's one. It was so light. I have to say, also it was so covered in nicks and scratches. Richard and I debated putting some of the bigger ones on to the model but realised that a) it would be too hard to do them repeatably and b) it would have increased the cost.

The other thing that really shocked me was the intricacy of the crackle effect, the crackles on David's last sonic prop are tiny. We decided early on that if we could lay our hands on the real prop, we would copy the crackles as well as we could, because this hadn't been done before.

As far as the weight is concerned, it would have been impossible for us to make the body out of metal and have the crackle finish a good match to the David Tennant prop that we ended up copying. A metal body (had that been possible) would have made the sonic much more expensive and would have also required a hand made paint job on each one, further increasing the cost of the product and opening up the potential for the crackle effect to look very different indeed. Lastly (and I know Richard will probably correct me on the number of this) but... because the body is only a small part of the overall device, swapping out the ABS for the same aluminium that the rest of the product is made in, would have only added about 7g or 8g to the total weight of the product, because aluminium is only just over 2.5 times heavier (more dense) than ABS. (Note, brass is about 8 or 9 times more dense than ABS and by the same token, had it been possible to make the main body in brass, then it would have added about 25g to the overall weight).

I received this yesterday and I've got to say I'm really pleased. It's not what I was expecting at all but that doesn't mean I'm disappointed. I can't explain it's brilliant but just different. I think it's the size and weight and functionality. Here's some pics.

I don't do reviews and for a good reason. But here is a review/close up view of the Sonic. Be kind.

Good choice! Although we do love accuracy, many of us also like the prop to be fairly new. Aluminium does tend to scratch easily, whatever the use. I just didn't expect it to be so prone to scratching so quickly.

As far as the weight is concerned, it would have been impossible for us to make the body out of metal and have the crackle finish a good match to the David Tennant prop that we ended up copying.

Im glad it was made from ABS as the crackle effect on it is perfect! No complaints there!

(Note, brass is about 8 or 9 times more dense than ABS and by the same token, had it been possible to make the main body in brass, then it would have added about 25g to the overall weight).

With the MFX sonic, not only was the body made from brass, but the innards were too. I am aware that the actual prop is around the 50-65g mark (depending if it is A/B) which is much lighter than the MFX version. However, with this remote it does feel like when I use it, I will break it, where as the MFX version has a much more solid feel to it, with little play from the components.

On the other hand, I am getting used to the weight and am amazed at the amount of "stuff" that is going on on the inside! I especially love the ability to recharge the battery as it will save me a fortune on buying the button cells!

Just got mine! It's great! Does feel a bit lighter in comparison to my other sonics but that's to be expected with the material of the body.

Wish I could post proper comparison pics but yeah..

Dear Richard,
Sorry for another shipping question.
I have an email from Mighty Ape (New Zealand) that says the expected release date is now the 30th of November? Any idea what is taking them so long as you said a while back that they were picking up their shipment.
Please note I am not blaming you
Thanks

Strangely, I have the same question about Firebox. They have confirmed that my sonic is amongst the ones in the last schipment (though, they didn't confirm it in these exact words), but still it says "stock expected in 2-4 days" on my account.

I think you may have missed the 'November' part. ie. a month away.
