Never Ending Story The Book

Bigger, fancier reference books frequently had multiple ribbons, since you were meant to refer to different sections frequently. I used to own a 20s encyclopedia with five ribbons; one of the cheaper ones since each was the same color as the others. :)

Putting two ribbons on it implies a separate section that the author expected you to reference. An appendix or index, perhaps?

The edges are indeed rough at the edges, they are called deckled edges.
I am told it will be a challange to get the lasers on the binding equiptment to read the edges properly. The couple that is helping cunsult also believe the cover may not be leather but an odd cardboard felt amalgum I forget the name of but they had some on hand and it is a close match.
Anyone else have news?

Not much from my side - unfortunately I don't have much time at the moment :unsure

As I mentioned I started with one of the ornate initials as seen in the pic.
This is not finished yet I have to smooth the lines etc. - just want to give you a short preview :lol

Take a look at the high-res pic I posted in post #177. It shows the book at an angle, and you see 'wrinkles' that look like leather, and that it's somewhat reflecting light from the set (like leather would being slightly glossy). The felt material doesn't sound like it would do that, but I'm not exactly sure what it is they are describing...

Dont get me wrong I think it should be leather even if the screen used wasnt. But what the guy showed me looked exactly like one of the screencaps. I am all for Idealized props in almost all situations, when i was ten my mind was awesome at filling in gaps.

Just chipping in to say I'd love to purchase the Auryn and the cover stuff. To my mind purchasing an original copy of the book and modding it to resemble the movie is the easiest - not entirely screen accurate but no issue of legality.

Plus once I pay the rightful owner, I can mod it as I wish.

Interesting to hear the thoughts of Michael Ende (Author) himself about this movie. I try to translate in english:

"The main thing in the film should have been a fantasia, which shows or represents the world of fantasy. Therefore it should be said, that the fantasy which is to be found in this film, barely meets the niveau of a middle class night club. Only a bling bling discoball on the ceiling and a group of half naked girls is missing. Everything in this movie, which should have been magical and mysterious was bold and primitive. The ivory tower is shown as a kind of a television tower with three antennas, the sphinxes in the desert are an embarrassment - they are huge titted peep show girls sitting in the desert. In the end of the movie, orgies of thrash are celebrated, in the chamber of the childlike empress is a hollywood bed, even with a seashell in the beackground. It was transformed into a ineffable story".

I was told that Michael Ende even pulled his name from the production.

Sry for the clumsy translation!

Hey, I LOVE books!! I've made a lot and never thought of this one?!! Derrr!@! I'm IN!! Lemme know what kinda help you need...
I have hand made my own books for the past 10 years. I know that this book being so huge will take a great deal of craftsmanship to bind alone. If I were to make this book...I'd hand sew the binding, from the pics I've seen.

I'm real happy this project is still going...
I've seen too many projects fall flat on thier face! I'm down to say that if this replica were commercially available it would be a hot seller - to collectors and fans of the movie alike!

Wow, guys, just WOW! I'm surprised I didn't see this thread sooner. I'd love to get a copy for myself but I don't know what i could contribute to it. In the end though if i can have the opportunity to get one for myself, count me on the list of buyers. ^_^

I hate to burst any bubble yet but.....50 copies...WOW!!
I wish you all knew the extent of binding a book...It is a lost art that I myself will teach anyone but I can't do 50 copies of this book. We need all the book binder's on the RPF to step forward. Granted, I would be honored to do this but I am now taking on 4 other binding jobs for my own replica's, not to mention Dexter boxes and Sheldon shirts which are very hot items for me to do now.
I want one of these for myself but to be expected to make 50 is over whelming for anyone...

Here's what I would say for pricing...if I were to make it all from scratch.
-Cover leather...20 bucks
-paper...for 500 page book...20 bucks
-printing it all in b&w 20 bucks...
-20 color prints...20 bucks
-gold leaf....lol very expensive...???
-metal die stamp for lettering....???
-glue,thread,needles,presses,clamps...binding shop tools...???
-resin molded corner details and center snake charm...40 bucks...fully painted and stained to look old...

So far 120.oo just for materials and construction and about 5 days per book in drying time and manufacturing time. Tops...2 books a week...maybe more pending on the size of the run.

Don't think blank pages makes much of a diff...printing time is nothing....blank or not...it's all gotta be sewn together...

If I were to hand bind this book, with everything given to me....so nothing had to be boughten from my own pocket...I'd charge 150.00 just for labor...And that's cheap...I am sorry...but it's the best I could do...I'm not a corporate entity with 69 limbs to do 5'000 things at once....wish I was though....

Lemme think about this a lil more...maybe it's not that bad, but it's a hard book to pull off...
