Never Ending Story The Book

:lol I don't like being "that guy" :unsure but I was curious as to what price range we're looking at per book. :confused

You're not the only one.. I've got to watch what I spend now, with little one on the way.. My other half says I have to cut down big time.. So am making a need and want list.. Of course this goes under need, like all V and BttF items.. :lol Not fair, as soon as I finally get to join and start ordering up, have to cut down.. :cry

Here's what I would say for pricing...if I were to make it all from scratch.
-Cover leather...20 bucks
-paper...for 500 page book...20 bucks
-printing it all in b&w 20 bucks...
-20 color prints...20 bucks
-gold leaf....lol very expensive...???
-metal die stamp for lettering....???
-glue,thread,needles,presses,clamps...binding shop tools...???
-resin molded corner details and center snake charm...40 bucks...fully painted and stained to look old...

So far 120.oo just for materials and construction and about 5 days per book in drying time and manufacturing time. Tops...2 books a week...maybe more pending on the size of the run.

Don't think blank pages makes much of a diff...printing time is nothing....blank or not...it's all gotta be sewn together...

If I were to hand bind this book, with everything given to me....so nothing had to be boughten from my own pocket...I'd charge 150.00 just for labor...And that's cheap...I am sorry...but it's the best I could do...I'm not a corporate entity with 69 limbs to do 5'000 things at once....wish I was though....

Lemme think about this a lil more...maybe it's not that bad, but it's a hard book to pull off...

well, i was thinking that depending on the cost of the book that may have an effect on how many get made for a single run. Let's face it, many people have a budgetary restriction as well on what they can spend on a piece like this no matter how worth the price it is. I figured that if we started talking price that may weed out any that are only halfhearted about buying one. Depending on how many WILL take one that will give us a better idea as to how many should be made.

That being said, Antrock, what could be done to keep the costs low? If machine bound can the page edges be left rough like the pictures? How much would that save in labor? Could a machine binding job bring that price down significantly enough to warrant a higher run count? and options on detailing in the way of "extras" may be an idea. could the book be sold with an unfinished "kit" cover that needs the buyer to finish and assemble the resin parts? Just throwing out some ideas. like I said, I'd like to contribute somehow but my book prop making has been...none in fact XD I usually specially in Sci-Fi and Horror gadgets and devices XD

There are multiple feelers out on the binding front. So I would not get too excited just yet, and 90 percent of the artists and artisans are going for a higher end ultimate edition.... Quality paper, bronze auryn and corners, tooling leather marbled end papers et all.
So it is safe to say that even with a no profit run, Which was the purpose of this in the first place. This book is gonna cost in the hundreds:unsure.... hopefully the low hundreds.
I have secured several pounds of bronze grain at about half the going rate, so that should bring the castings in at 80.00 per book instead of the 120.00 I had thought at the onset.
And pleaes remember this is not an interest or sale thread.... so keep all that on the dl.

I guess I'm out...This is too big for me to afford...80 for emblems alone is to much already....costs will have to be waaaaay lower than that for anyone here. Just speaking from experience...The interest will fade really quick once prices are set for materials of that nature.

Oh yes, I figured it would be that sort of range. I know it is a non profit build. Just the cost of material and labor which is why I had said I wanted to be able to contribute somehow. I figured I could at least make some suggestions or something that might help.

Hi all, I finally finished drawing the first ornate initial for the pages.

As I already mentioned, I think we should use ornate initials,
becaue we have a guideline from the 2nd movie book and we have to fill up quite some pages - What's you opinion?

Is anyone else working on artwork for the pages?

Cheers,
Eduard

Hey Eduard,
I found a font called Romantik that can be used for these.
I added an extra outline and it really made it pop:

Whoever will be doing the printing, I'd be happy to send whatever letters you need.
I don't think I can afford one of these, but I'll still be happy to do what I can to keep this project going.

By the way, sorry for the lack of updates from my end. My mom has been really ill for the last couple of months and now my wife and I have my 15 year old sister living with us. This is actually the first time I've had time to be on this site for longer than 5 minutes.

That's the closest I've seen, though still not exact. :)

Hi Vash, TheMalum,
great find and thanks for the info.
I already thought about using such a font - it would make the things easier :lol

@Darthinvictus, all:
What's your opinion? Should we use an already available font or try to
replicate the font from the second movie?

Well it's up to the group.
I prefer screen close or I dealized in most cases, if a tremendous amount of work and time can be saved I say go for it, but not at the cost of cool.
In any case I ma happy to see forward momentum.

Hey folks,

hate to have to chime in again, but as soon as you talk about prices and edition sizes, this becomes an interest thread and would have to be moved to the Junkyard.

So, please finish the research, and THEN you can move on to starting a thread about interest and talk about realizing it.

Thanks,
Michael

Well, I'm sure I'm late to the party, but the font they used in the sample pulled from NES 2 is called Art Nouveau Initialen, a freely available Postscript Type 1 font. I've converted it to OpenType for my own use, as I'm a Windows guy.
