The Mummy: Book of the Dead WIP

I've been wanting to make this for a long time but all the files I saw out there were not as accurate as I would have liked until I saw this one. This version has gears and tabs that hold the hinges closed (not spring loaded though, ill get to that later on) I had to resize it though, I used the measurements from the prop store when they sold the hero book a while back. I scaled all the parts to 96.92% and printed them. Printed the covers and pages on my filament printer and the hinges and spine parts on my resin.

Then the long process of sanding and puttying begun.....

Painted all the hinges gloss black to prep for the polished brass Don't worry I fixed the layer lines on this one =)

Painted them using Alclad II polished brass but I ran out with a few more parts to go. I didn't know that it is a discontinued color now but I found the replacement here.

I've finished a few pages and weathered them. The pic makes the layer lines stand out more than in person.

I just have 2 more pages and the covers left to sand a weather. I do have a question, how should I go about making the hinges spring loaded so when I turn the dial they pop open? Here are all the components for the hinges

Ok so I need some help, I've tried a few times but have failed to make the hinges spring loaded.

Anyone know how the original prop did it or have an idea on how to?

Thanks!

A torsion spring is the way to go, but it has to be somehow inside the hinge, and way bigger than the ones in my key.

Just look at Amazon torsion springs and find one that'll fit inside the hinge.

It needs to be in the hinge, and the hinge should be open when the spring is completely unwound. So, torsion springs are by degrees and come in a left wound or right wound type.

That's what I looked into before messaging you about them. But when I tried I couldnt figure out how to make them fit right with what I saw online. So I ended up making my own. I bought a softer spring slightly smaller than the bar the hinge sits on and cut it. I bent the two ends out and drilled holes in "legs" and "head" of the hinge to insert the ends. (Probably not explaining clearly). In a sense making my own torsion spring.

Here are the results:

I think I'm happy with it! Even makes the clunk sound the real book does.

Just need paint the springs so they blend in better then I should be done
