My Pred Thread

Yeah the alien skull is amazing. I'm so happy with the way the shield turned out too. I just got a message from Termokk saying he is sending my mask, torso, neck ring and bio on Friday so it will be here in about 10 days or so. Gauntlets, backpack waiting for me to pay customs charge on Friday. This means soon my posts may actually feature a costume instead of just lots of weapons...heh.

Okami - yeah I saw the Machiko figure. I really want one of them to be honest but they cost about $500 on eBay. I do like the shield design on the toy but I like the idea that it's an actual alien head thats been ripped off and used like in AVP movie.

Thanks for both your comments. I'll update when my gaunts arrive.

Well, what else can be said? Looks freakin awesome. Those teeth look great!

I finally found a skull light enough and that looked right for the trophy I was building. This will be strapped up over the other shoulder from the plasma cannon. It's made of a medical spine model and a halloween skull. The pics are just the raw pieces together, I haven't done any modelling or painting yet. When I'm done they will be unrecognisable and look very authentic I hope! I call hiim Bob. He's watching TV with me and my cat (and George the Mannequin!).

Wow my front room is getting weirder and weirder looking!

Yeah that guy seems to have gone onto a whole casting trip. I think the original idea is clearly good though; using the spinal cord model. The original is really light and durable - no need to cast. Will be fun to paint up but going to sort gauntlets & backpack first.

These arrived raw, unpainted but backpack foamed at my request from Mannowar. They are just what I wanted. They have a lot of work to be done on them. Apart from the large amounts of trimming on the backpack I'm going to have cut a panel out of the gaunts to work my bomb countdown in and cut holes for the blades and bolt bits together.

The backpack also has the perfect shoulder panel to bolt my gun onto. Going to have to figure out the best way to attach the backpack (which will be weighed down by the resin cannon) to the torso. I'm thinking a few bolts that go through torso, backpack & cannon simultaneously to really secure them. Only thing is not sure I want to poke holes in Corey's beautiful torso but short on other ideas...except for possibly velcro. Need the torso to arrive first to really make final decisions.

I'm buying a Dremel tomorrow. I will use it to trim everything and clean it up. Then on Monday my friend is coming over to brainstorm putting everything together (we have been working on the suit together).

Any suggestions on best ways to attach the various bits are welcome. Also the gaunts seem a bit spacious inside. Whilst they leave room for the skin to fit underneath I'm thinking I'm going to have to pad them with foam to make them stay snug. Once again more suggestions appreciated for how people have dealt with this issue.

Here are pics of what I received today from Mannowar:

I'm thinking I will have to cut this entire panel out to replace with the one from my bomb countdown as the numbers don't have the exact same spacing...

Anyone suggest best way to attach latex foam filled backpack with no obvious easy method of attachment to latex torso. I don't want to glue it because I want to be able to remove gun & backpack if need be and they will be bolted together due to the weight of the gun. I think very strong velcro could take the weight of the gun and keep the back pack in place but the means either stitching or glueing the velcro to the latex. Not sure I want to do this to my Termokk torso unless I can help it...

Has anyone else beaten this problem? Right now glueing latex on with some king of super expoxy glue is seeming the best way for a stable, strong but removable cannon / backpack unit. Even suggestions as to what glue to use would help (please stick to stuff we may have in the UK - not brands but glue types please).

There was a thread from a member who showed almost a complete build of his armor. He used a slotted set up for attaching his backpack. The mount on the suit had slots and the backpack had tabs. The tabs had flat heads on them, like a nail head. This inserted into the slot, it then slid down and inch or two and locked into place. Slide it up and the backpack came off. However, for the life of me I can't find the thread now.

Thanks Director. Mannowar emailed me a cute little diagram:

The idea I believe is to use brackets to screw to the torso. I can see this would be quite stable. My concern is that the stress on the latex would quickly tear holes.

I found a 'super velcro tape' used for cars in my local branch of Halfords and was going to see if large amounts of that would hold it in place. It would be nice to be able to put on the backpack after suiting up in the torso.

In the meantime I bought a Dremel today and will be getting to grips with it tomorrow. The ideas is to use the polishing tool to trim my backpack and do work on the gaunts. I'm looking into using a kitchen draw mechanism to make the blades roll out...

Oh and Corey promised to send my mask, bio & torso after Thanksgiving so I'm looking forward to receiving some tracking info soon...

Looking at that pic, I would cut pieces from plywood that are same sized as brackets. Drill holes to plywood on same spacing as on brackets so you can put that inside latex torso as one big washer that takes stress from the latex and put brackets on like on the picture.

And because I'm want to make my stuff that it really can handle beating, I would brush liquid latex on big piece of cotton fabric, then put latex inside of the torso and when latex is almost cured (becomes transparent) place the cotton piece inside the torso so that it reinforces those openings from streching.

edit : This cotton patch I would put inside torso before placing big plywood washers so its between the plywood, latex torso and the backbag

But this is just my 0.02$

I received tracking info + this picture from Termokk this morning. I am hoping my stuff will be here this time next week although I can't seem to get the USPS tracking parcel id thing to work yet (probably because it was posted on the weekend or something). Anyhow I'm pretty excited as I've been waiting since I first placed the original order for the mask back on 5th October (I requested Corey send the whole order in one go so it's my fault!)

Despite my bio, mask & torso being in the bowels of some cargo ship crossing the ocean I haven't rested on my laurels.

I've trimmed the latex backpack down so it looks really nice and neat:

(the nictotine stained appearance of the backpack is just due to the terrible lighting)

Until I have the torso and can figure out how I am attaching the backpack I'm holding off painting it as any modifications I make would mess with the paintjob.

This left me to work on the gauntlets. There was actually a fair bit that I needed to do:

Wristblade gaunt: I trimmed the wristblades with the mini sander on my Dremel and then filled all the tiny holes in the resin with modelling putty to get it nice and smooth. I'm painting these with Alclad so they need to be as smooth as possible as Alclad is not very forgiving and shows up every tiny detail.

Then using my dremels drill attachment I cut out the slots for the blades in the gauntlet. I'm going to work on attaching the 3 parts of the wristblade gauntlet once they're painted as it's much easier to paint in 3 parts, particularly as I'm using acrylics on the main part and lacquer based paint (Alclad) on the blades themselves. This is now ready to paint. Here it is held together with a bit of putty just for the photo. I'm feeling pretty excited about doing the paintjob on these badboys! Once painted I'll pad the inside with foam for a better snug fit on my wrists.

Then I very carefully cut out the top panels of the bomb countdown gauntlet (with my awesome Dremel) so I can mount my electronic countdown sunken inside the gauntlet. It turns out the bomb countdown piece I bought is one thick slab of resin with electronics in it. It looked so much like the original wood the maker cast it from I was fooled. It was a major effort to trim it down but I did it in the end with the help of my best mate. Together we matched it to the holes we'd cut in the bombcountdown and have now glued it in place. It's drying over night and then I 'm covering it in soft foam on the inside to prevent it being uncomfortable against my arm. Luckily Mannowar's gauntlets are nice and spacious inside leaving enough room to add stuff and still fit your arm inside. It needs quite a bit more work tomorrow at this stage before I can even think of painting it. I will be masking the read out on the electronics and painting it all as one piece.

Once I'm done I think both gaunts are going to be awesome! I'll post some pics of the bomb gauntlet when there's a bit more to show - at present I can't really take any good photos...

Hey man, I just had a quick thought about how to support the backpack/cannon....

for the inside of the skin, use a good fitting fabric vest. On the back of the vest you could sow 3 or 4 grommets and plungers.

( here's a picture to show what i'm talking about http://cdn.sigma.oct...1L/SLG-1L/B.jpg, Or here http://www.richco-in...A&grpcode=D1060)

The vest would support the added weight of the pred backpack, thus ensuring minimum damage to your suit. the bottom part of the plunger is so small that it would only require a small "hole" for it to go through the skin, doing very minimal damage. That's what you would do for the skin.

For the actual pred backpack you could use something from the inside of pack (if hollow), like coroplast, to support the part where it will be on your back. on the coroplast you will cut key holes (http://upload.wikime...ive_keyhole.svg), which will fit over the plungers. That should hold it in place until lifter up off your shoulders to get it off.

Might work.. everything could be found cheap! worth a shot?

Thanks mate! I'll add that to my list of ideas to try out. I'll be experimenting with different methods of attaching it as soon as the torso actually arrives. Thanks for thinking of me!

I thought I'd post a few pics of the bomb gauntlet in it's current state - prior to painting and a bit more modelling work. Basically we've just fitted the electronics. All the digital readouts you see here are live and not drawn or painted on.

Also I just managed to get my tracking working for my Termokk bits - there was a missing digit. My torso + masks are with UK customs so should be here Tuesday, Wednesday next week. I am expecting hefty customs charges...

More pics to come!
