Interesting, is that just to shape the leather? I'd imagine that would be very heavy if it was used as a frame.

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. HAT HAT HAT 02-17-10

No No! NOT TO WEAR!!!! Used as a hat block to shape the crown!

I wouldn't want to be mistaken for a "pot-head!" 80)

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. HAT HAT HAT 02-17-10

I'll be interested to see the pot shape you found. Could be handy when I finally sit down to make a leather hat.

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. HAT HAT HAT 02-17-10

UM great work so far! Your hat is going to look great!!

I love the glove material you found! Actually, it looks like a cleaner version of mine. :lol It's so wierd that they're so similar and both even have blue lines in it! Apparently blue and brown makes for a good plaid? Who would've thought? lol

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. More Hat HATTER 02-18-10

More hat progress! I found two ceramic pots at the gardening center of OSH. Both have great shape however the first version has too much of a swoop. The bottom circle is way too small for my head so I think I will turn it into a hat for my son!

CIMG9793.jpg

First I cut the top curve by sketching out the edge onto the suede side of the leather, clip it and continue the line. Same goes for the bottom curved line as well.

CIMG9774.jpg

CIMG9776.jpg

CIMG9775.jpg

Continue the process and clip the top. I added about another 1 cm on the top so that I can use that for the stitched area.

CIMG9777.jpg

Ice cream leather cone!
CIMG9779.jpg

The finished shape for the crown.
CIMG9780.jpg

Time to start wet molding. Soak the piece of leather as much as possible. The drying process will stiffen up the leather and help keep the shape.

CIMG9782.jpg

Start wrapping and clip. I use a small piece of leather in the clip so that the wet leather doesn't get permanently indented.

CIMG9783.jpg

CIMG9784.jpg

CIMG9785.jpg

I also tried to smooth out the leather as best as possible taking out any creases or bulging. I also bent the leather at the bottom in order to mark the crease that will meet the edge of the brim.

CIMG9786.jpg

The bottom.
CIMG9787.jpg

Testing the size of the brim on the crown.
CIMG9790.jpg

The V shaped areas will be tucked into the crown and glued with Barge glue. The tabs will be glued in between the two brim pieces.
CIMG9791.jpg

Now I sit and wait (or sleep now) for the leather to dry.

I still need to make the final piece which is the top of the crown. And after that comes the paisley pattern!!! That should only take a few months! :confused

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. More Hat HATTER 02-18-10

Shouldn't the wet molding be done after the pattern is punched into it?
I'm looking into getting some leather laser cut.

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. More Hat HATTER 02-18-10

Wet molding is not the final step. It just starts out the general shape of the leather. With careful unrolling of the molded leather it will still maintain the shape.

Using one of these is really going to speed up my design.

I still need to develop a template to draw on the leather and use the different size tips to make the varying holes.

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. More Hat HATTER 02-18-10

i just punched holes at random
(well not really random, there are swirls and paisley designs all over)
it was alot faster and really fun cause you can let your imagination run wiled

i have some little designs hidden in mine
like some hearts and even a flower

i like it cause if i were to make another the design would be constantly different
and you can make each one have its own character

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. More Hat HATTER 02-18-10

Punching holes..........and MORE punching holes! Punching holes while watching TV! Punching holes during my lunch hour at work sitting on a park bench! Punching holes until 3:00am!!!!!!!!!!!

Will it ever end???????????????????????????

About 85% done! Still need to finish the top part of the crown! Added some customization like a Hidden Mickey, a teapot, a pocket watch, and working on a design to hide in a rose!

No wonder why it is taking SO LONG!!!

I hope I can emulate some of you leather-hat guys in the future. I really enjoy hearing about your progress! Can't wait to see more pics! :)

:O

I want to photoshop myself inside of it!!!

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. Going Mad!! 02-22-10

Design progress! Can you find the Hidden Mickey?

This brim still needs so touch up in many areas. This was the first piece that I started with. I took several different HI RES photos of the hat from SDCC and D23. Flattened out the design as best I could and used that for the template. I tried to find the repeating pattern in the hat so I wouldn't have to make too many templates. Where I couldn't see the design I added the customization.

The holes are a little small but they should show up better after staining!

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. Going Mad!! 02-22-10

what i love about poking the holes you self apart from getting them lazer cut (even though that's the only way to make it perfectly screen accurate)
is that no matter how many you make no two will be the same
each one will have its own secretes and there own personality
that way when we all meet up or run into each other at some con
we can compare hats and tell each other fun story's about them ^^

Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W. I. P. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! 02-25-10

Continuing...AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

I airbrushed the top and bottom of the brim last night and it looks good but the only problem is now the design has slowly disappeared and faded into the green/brown stain. No pics yet! I ran out of compressed air so it is back to the hobby store!

Rather than going back yet again and making the holes larger I need to figure out how to enhance the design. Old photo of design holes!

CIMG9796.jpg

The entire tooling process is done now I need to stain. I added a rose, teapot, and my kids names into the design. Blended them in as best as possible but after about two minutes the wifey found them.

Wow! Painstaking, but fantastic work :)

Looks good. The actual teapot used in the film is made by Royal Copenhagen. They run a couple hundred bucks! haha
