Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

Even with the blurry image, you can see the darkest of lines are straight vertical/horizontal. If they were on a diagonal the darkest lines would be going diagonal.
I also strongly believe there is a 3rd type of fabric going on in the vest as well, not just the checkered & black combo. At least that's what I did.

Connor, I've no idea. I held the hat, not the costume itself. At this point, your guess is as good as mine. Unless they come out with better pictures, I'm not sure we'll ever know. His tie is so large that it covers that whole area.

"It be too late to alter course now!":lol

I good with it!

Again my version is on a budget and I leave the construction to my Master Seamstress....Seamstaperson!!

Buttons will be rearranged and replaced with brass domed buttons (I see a battle coming on as to the size, height, etc. much like Jacks!!)

Lapels or not!? Who knows but from 19th century vests that evolved from the waistcoat from the 18th century started to take on a different form and appearance. Vests started to get large lapels as did The Wests version of 19th century clothing.

My vest was just ready made and had the lapel so it fit in perfectly for the 19th century look.

thats right you know some one who has one of the hats
guess we will find out eventually
ill probably do mine without a lapel, i just dont think it needs it, and if later i find there is one, ill just make a new vest ^^

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

Yet another frame by frame study of both HD trailers reveals that the lace along the pant legs seem to stay black. The shirt, wrist lace, and even the scarf in the right jacket pocket all change color.

Some of the frames show a pink shirt, pink wrist lace, pink scarf, and black lace on the legs. I don't see them at all pink.

Well I guess I have to take my white scalloped embroidery and dye it black. Thank goodness for leftover dye!:wacko

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

I pictured the vest as that Tombstone one...for some reason...I think I had one at some point...but I don't remember now. However I just noticed the red vest definitely does have lapels so I wouldn't doubt the checkered one does as well.

This is sad news to me because I hate making them. :(

One way to know is to buy that $200 doll...but I prefer to lurk for my reference online as opposed to buy it. But Mattel is releasing some collectible Barbies of characters from the movie so I'd assume they'd be some nice reference too...eventually I will get them ( at $50 a piece ) and hopefully the question will be answered. But since the red one has it and the upper half of the costume is pretty much identical other than colour, I'd say lapels are a yes.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

I think we will leave that up to you wench -types! We know how you like to undress JD with your eyes! Who knows what you are liable to do with the $200 action figure!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

Lovely, now i have to draft a pattern for Lapels
oh well, they look good thats what maters

My reply to that, in smilies: :angel :love :lol:lol

It's true though! They are good sources of reference! Especially the ones with the real clothes! And hopefully the Mattel one looks good...cause I can't afford the $200 one. Then again, I'm sure there will be tons by tons of different companies after the movie comes out...which won't really help any of us making the costume now. Blegh. If there's anything I miss this time I'll be on my THIRD re-make! :wacko

I have everything I need for the vest and planned on finishing it tonight...but can't even bring myself to cut out the squares for it... zzzz....

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

Some good reference photos of said action figure (we dudes say action figures NOT doll!:lol)

I think the first one is a solid plastic or resin figure.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

yesyes. the second 'action figure' is the super pricey one...and every time i look at it it makes me mad cause what the HECK is going on with the back of that coat? o_O

comparing the two makes me wonder, what colour trim...or piping...or fuzzy edging ... whatever you want to call it, is everyone using for the coats? red? burgundy? purple? brown ? black?

I used a deep red the first time but the way the camera flash made the coat seem LIGHT brown and the wool seem BRIGHT red look pretty hideous. @_@ Haven't decided yet for the new one I'm currently working on...

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

We had a conversation about the back of the coat once before, we pretty much concluded that it is double vented.

Oh right...I remember that convo...I think I lurked the whole thing.

What I meant about the figures coat is that it just looks weird....under each button it's split, or vented...but the portion between the buttons should be solid correct? Whereas on the figure theres an additional split in the center or at least it looks to be that way because of the contrast trim. I suppose it could just be the stiffness of a miniature coat not being able to flow the way normal fabric would though...:)

Hey, Chad...did you get MAJOR headaches while cutting out the small gingham squares for the checker print for your vest? 'Cause I am DYING right now. Tell me it's worth it in the end!! :wacko

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

Oh it is worth it in th end....oh wait! You will need to talk to Gelfling Gal about that! :confused

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

Well while taking care of laundry, a 4 month old, and a sick 4 year old I was trying to be productive and work on my pants.

I messed up and splilt the pants at the inseam. Didn't notice it until it was too late. Now I have to do a frakin' repair!!! UGH! That will set me behind since I now need to handstitch the bloody thing!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

OH NOoooooooooooooooooooo!!!

I know the feeling!!!! Not only did I do that exact same thing...but when I was sewing the side seams of my Alice skirt, I matched up the corners and sewed halfway up the seam before realizing I had matched it up to the opposite corner of the front panel. -_-

Why handstitch? Don't you have a sewing machine? Only takes a minute!!!

103 little squares and counting... headache has receded but I think I'm going cross-eyed. Thank goodness the back and inside of this vest are going to be PLAIN!!!!!

OH MY GOD that is my least favorite thing about that damned vest. The only help I can offer is to either brew a pot of herbal tea and cut them out while watching a movie, or get yourself a rotary cutter and a cutting board and do it that way. The latter is much faster.

SO WORTh IT in the end by the way!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

HAhahaha! Glad I'm not alone in the gingham square checkered vest hating!

I stopped at 103 for today...I don't think I could use a rotary cutter though. I'm being WAY too picky with the pattern and I'm no where near steady enough with my hands...seriously concentrating on dissecting them right down the center of lighter lines so that when theyre on the vest i get a 1, 3, 5, 5, 3, 1 white checker. o_O Time to check me into an institution.

I'm still finding some are definitely more ... rhombus shaped than perfect squares but having the right amount of checker is particular enough for me. No one will notice they're slightly uneven once the dizzying finished product is being worn. @_@

Not looking forward to part 2 either, which is sewing them all on the base fabric. *whimper* I'm basically making about a yard of the checkered stuff to use for the vest as opposed to making the vest and then putting the squares on. Mainly because I think it'll be easier to double pinstripe a square slab as opposed to a pre cut piece.

... We'll see...

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

So gusset material? Remnants of the cut pants or another material solid in color? The movie pants appear to be lighter in weight and a solid color. The action figure looks like it is the same material (striped) as the pants. Of course the action figure is not really a good indicator of material type and color.

Also! What is this? Looks like bias tape running up the pant leg? Any ideas? It doesn't appear to be a seam or part of the lace material sticking out? I am 'plexed!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

Aye, good eye! :D Wonder what's up with the bias tape? Be simple enough to add though!

I'm still not for sure if I quite understand how the lace goes up the side of the leg myself.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

I noticed that too...the only thing i can think of is maybe they put it in the seams on either side of the gusset. I don't know why it runs so high though, unless its a VERY gradual gusset that starts above the knee. o_O
