Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

UM, I forgot to tell you I saw the toggle clasp at the bottom in the pic! :eek

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

I'm wondering if MH etches his boots out of boredom whilst he was captured by the Red Queen. Just a thought? Of course I haven't seen the script!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

His boots are lookin pretty clean shortly after we are first introduced to the Hatter in the film as far as I can deduce from the footage shown so far.

I believe that footage is from the Frabjous Day attack flashbacks before he went fully mad. Ergo: clean shoes and jacket.

YES!!! I knew my mind wasn't playing tricks on me when at that part where he picks up his hat in the trailer his coat is smooth and clean! This makes so much sense now! :D BUT Frabjous day is a good day filled with futterwaken!! I think you mean ...uhh... Horunvendush ...? Though I didn't read the whole script so I may be wrong in correcting what you were trying to say...

I just went to look at that 'visual guide'. Nothing that great for reference in it...a couple shots of Alice's red dress but she's in funny poses and covers up most of it. BOOO!!

BUT There was a page on the Dormouse and a shot of her next to the Hatters right foot and of course, OF COURSE, his sock was different. Well at least on the one foot. It was mainly brown with red and white stripes. If I remember correctly ( oh, this is bad cause it was just 20 minutes ago... ) his foot was shackled so ... at some point during his journey he decides to change socks...I guess even with all that poison he still cares about hygiene to an extent...Unless they change colours with his moods too. :confused hahaha

More updates on the vest! Squares were no longer used! Too hard to cut and too hard to glue and made everyone cross :confused :confused eyed!!!

Paint the squares she said and painted them she did! WOW! It came out great! She is finishing up the purple trim!

I found the perfect lace for the pants:love! Black, scalloped and just require some trimming to get that more curved look. Also 3 yards of black trim! More Heat N Bond here I come!

Dang, that came out ALOT better than I would ever though! :D When you said "paint" I thought "oh crap!" :lol :p ;) Looks just fine dude! :D

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. More vest updates 02-02-10

that worked out really good
like i dont think any of us would have guessed unless we were right up next to you

but getting that close would be awkward XP

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. More vest updates 02-02-10

A vest update of my own!! HOPEFULLY it will be done tomorrow...the squares took a lot longer than I was expecting. Well, and the hand pinstriping...so it's still in the works but here's a peek.

I don't really like how it photographs atm...It's just so CLEAN right now...I think I might dunk the whole thing in tea to dull down the white checkered...plan on adding some purple to the trim ( which is a satin piping...not biastape like the photo looks like -o- ) too but in an uneven way. The pinstripes are actually lilac thread but again, it's something that's so light you can barely tell...I think once it's all dulled it'll be much more subtle and Hatter-y looking...

hey Aelyn
did you just cut out holes in the black fabric
cause that's exactly what i was going to do ^^

Nope, I thought of that too but didn't want all of the rough edges on the black since I was doing the pinstriping instead of ribbon criss crossing...even though I ended up with rough edges on the gingham but it's a lot cleaner than it would've been the other way with the materials I chose. I cut out all the squares and glued them down. :)

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. More vest updates 02-02-10

so you cut out all the squares, glued them down, then stitched on top of them

sounds like a painfully tedious proses

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. More vest updates 02-02-10

LOL no, I didn't even stitch on top of them. The base of the vest is black, since the gingham pieces don't meet on the corners ( there's about a 1/2 inch of black in between all of them ). I cut out the gingham squares and glued those down and just did some decorative stitching along the black to make the black squares look smaller. :)

Not much more tedious than sewing ribbon in between. You're going to be cutting out just as many squares if you cut out enough from the black, silly!! I guess the layering would eliminate the gluing process but I hate cutting shapes out of larger pieces. For some reason, it always comes out uneven and I find it pretty time consuming to be so precise. The way I did it I could use one square for the size of all the rest and just snip snip snip and the slab them down exactly where I wanted them to be.

And now I'm off to try and finish this beast! UGH. I HATE making vests and coats...and the last 3 costumes I've made for Travis are this, Joker and Jack. -_- After every one I tell him I'm never making neither again and yet here I am. @_@

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. More vest updates 02-02-10

but vests are so easy, i can through one together in like 3 hours, pockets lining and all

ill have to just get a ton of "OH ****" fabric for when i go do the vest

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. Pant lace updates 02-03-10

Some updates on my pants. I added the lace down the outer seam on each leg. For someone that doesn't sew I have to say it took me near 1 1/2 hours per leg but by golly I got it done and that is not counting splitting the seams!:eek

I found the perfect scalloped lace for the job. The key is that I buried the bulk of the lace inside the pant leg and let the scalloped edge stick out. Tricks of the trade I assume?

My problem with finding the right lace was that most of them were gusseted themselves on the roll and this caused them to curl up. I had to snip the backbone part of the lace in order to spread it out.

Stretching out the lace made it easier to attach to the seam.

Lace closeups; lace down the seam and gussets.

I seriously thinking of running the pants through a quick dye bath of BLUE! What say you? Would it improve the look? :confused I need to do this before applying the stripes down the side and the thread image on the right pant leg.

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. Pant lace updates 02-03-10

OH MY GOD I leave this thread alone for FIVE MINUTES and miss out on everything! egads, Ok well from what I did read here are my retorts:

The scene where he picks up the hat is indeed from the flashback, that is the only hat remaining after the Jabberwocky Kills the entire Hightopp Clan.

The strip down the side of the pants, to me, looks to be made of the exact same material the pants are made of, only trimmed on either side in thin satin ribbon.

The script doesn't say anything about him scratching at his shoes out of boredom whilst in prison, However it DOES say that he essentially had tea starting from when alice left to her return, so 10 years at a tea party one can assume he got quite, QUITE bored.

And the vest looks lovely! if I didn't have such bad Tailoring Obsessive Compulsive disorder I would've done it that way.

The hatter is indeed shackled, and I don't want to give any more away, so I'll just say that he is shackled because hes "working."

Re: My Mad Hatter - W. I. P. Pant lace updates 02-03-10

Oh yeah! I got my Funny Man wig today! NICE! I may attempt to add some highlights in the front with some orange however I am not too sure if the wig can be lightened.

Type to "snip snip" some practice hairs!

Not looking forward to shaving considering I gots a Sparrow gig three weeks after March 6th! Buggah!
