Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

hi what colour is the jacket and pants every picture is different

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates VEST 01-28-10

every picture is different not only because camera flash and editing of photos and fabrics on film all look different but his costume changes colour according to his mood.

personally, i would say brown coat, brown pants, pink shirt, black vest ( though mine is so dark navy you cant tell its not black ), white lace...

it's up for interpretation. make it how you want it! :)

sockdreams.com

and now back on topic... i lost some squares for the vest tonight! I left them all in a checkerboard pattern on my floor and my cat, mom and boyfriend walked all over them and they got messed up and strewn about my room and down the hallway. booooooooooooo... tomorrow will be cutting more out. sigh.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

I finally made some progress on the pants. All hand sewn and a little Heat-N-Bond. I added the gussets successfully having gone through ALL the material that was cut off. In better words I screwed up the first two attempts due to the shape of the design.:wacko

I may add more pleats to the gussets to close up the gap a bit more. I also have a permanent flare because I added wire into the hem of the pants. I can now shape the wire to add more or less flare to the pants.

I will also take in the pants on the inseam around the knee area to add more taper down the leg. It looks OK for now but the legs look too straight.

Up next! The lacing on the side and the thread design on the right leg.

On an unusual note! I just inherited a 3 year old Simplicity sewing machine that has never been taken out of the box!! Costuming world LOOK OUT!!! The man has got a sewing machine!! :confused

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

Some thoughts. A frame by frame analysis from the first HD trailer of when the MH walks across his table it appears that the gusset is pleated. Hard to tell how many times but it definitely is pleated. From photos and screengrabs it appears the lace down the pant leg starts at the waist and goes down the front seam of the gusset.

Now to figure out how to attach the lace!!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

Now to figure out how to attach the lace!!

Wow. All of us costumers are really bad at giving late info and tips. X_x

The best way to attach the lace is to split the pants entirely up the side seam and insert it there, which would've been a lot more useful to know before you finished the pants... ( I realized this after as well ).

You can hand sew it on as it is but the lace will likely flip and fall flat in either direction. The only way for it to really stick out as it does in most images, is to have it come out of the center. The seam ripping and pinning back together sucks but at least its only one straight line to sew! And with a machine that only takes a couple minutes per leg! :D So happy for you! The world definitely needs to be on the lookout now! lol

Here's a really large shot of the pants from one of the posters...seems that wierd bias tape strip goes all the way up the leg. I dont know what it is or why it's there but I'm just leaving it out for now... does anyone else hate the way this pic is edited ( or maybe just the way the coat is...but I can't see it actually happening like that ) how it looks like he has a chunk bitten out of him on his left hip? It looks so strange!!!

Anwyays, here ya go:

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

UGH! That is what I figured. I plan on tapering down the pant legs so I guess I will "split a seam" nonetheless!:lol

Yes the sewing machine should be here Thursday! Now to figure out where to set it up?! :confused

FRAK! It appears to be a toggle clasp at the end of the hip chain too! GRUMBLE GRUMBLE!

Thanks for the advice!!!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

CJS, here's a ( at the moment ) very rare and though definitely not clear enough its better than nothing shot of the left side of the left shoe! Seems he's got something scrawled down the side of it but it's unclear what... this is a scan from the Visual Guide which is in bookstores now... not the visual companion, which I think is the one I want...I think that one comes out tomorrow.

I tried to brighten it up so it's a bit more visible but it's just too pixelly. :(

Oops. I was wrong. The visual companion comes out March 9. :( That's the good one though, at around $30. I have the Sweeney one, done by the same Author and it's a beauty. Worth every penny. :)

Yeah, there has been a lot of terrible photoshop for the promo of this movie.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

Has anyone ever though that the "bias tape" down the leg, is actually much like that of the satin stripe that goes down the side of a pair of tux pants?

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

Or in this case, another strip of satin ribbon, attached down the leg.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

Good point SC! Perhaps there is too much over analyzing of the pants! Sparrow SA lies to deep within me! Need to think "close enough!"

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

Ah haaah! Good call!

Makes so much sense that I think most of us here were just too mad to realize it. Hooray for an easy addition! Thanks!

It's kind of weird at the same time since usually the satin stripes on tuxes are usually pretty centered on the side whereas in this case the lace is in the center and the stripe is slightly off...or the lace come from the opposite side of the stripe. But it's not quite noticeable enough in any of the screenshots.

Oh, the fun that comes out of making a costume before the movies been released!

I think I'm going to go pick up a copy of the visual guide tonight if it's any good and run over that thing with a magnifying glass. And of course, scan what's worth scanning. :)

Wow. This will be my EIGHTH trip to the fabric store to buy, yet again, MORE ribbon. x_x

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

Yes, it's actually a very simple costume. It's all basic stuff & not very difficult. Even the quilting of the vest is much easier than people make it out to be.
We've all been given tons of reference to go by. They might've thrown a curve ball by showing a costume that wasn't identical to the hero outfit & hat, but the promo pics have helped fill in the gaps.

The only part left to struggle over is what is exactly scrawled all over the boots (assuming they too are different than the CC boots). But if the movie itself doesn't shed light on what's there, then what was on display will have to do.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

BTW, Charles.... if you're going to use your antique pocket watch, you should make the chain out of safety pins, like was done in the original concept sketch.
Or safety pins hanging from the chain.... I think that's how it was.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

SC! Good call mate! I think I may just do that considering I just bought an entire pack four weeks ago for some unknown reason!:lol:lol:lol Except they are gold and the watch is silver!:eek

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

I blew up the "shoe" picture, played with saturation, contract, light and dark and was able to make out some sort of letters on the left shoe!!! Good picture limekyu...I mean aelyn....I forget where I am posting now!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress Updates PANTS 02-01-10

i actually took gray bias tape and stitched the lace underneath it when i attached it to the side of the pants, so i didn't have to do any seam ripping at all. though i may have to cause of the pleat.
but you can see i tapered the pants to bell without it
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n259/Jack-047/l_9d3684225ff6418ea36b7e221143fa29.jpg
so ill probably still add it and it will hide until i start walking

actually if i do that right it will come out pretty cool
