Most underated movies (what are yours?)

Alright, here goes... in no particular order...
  • Writer/Director Andrew Niccol's Science Fiction masterpiece Gattaca... massively underrated film that's my pick for Best SF Movie of the 1990s. That film is everything that a SF film SHOULD be! It's made all the more impressive by the fact that it was his DEBUT FILM! (And FYI, his NEXT great SF masterpiece, In Time, opens in theaters October 28th! :))
  • The Sniper series, starring Tom Berringer and Billy Zane! :cool
  • Green Lantern! (Come on, if you didn't see that one coming, you're not paying enough attention! ;))
  • Speed Racer! (What can I say? I grew up on the cartoon and LOVED the movie! :))
  • The Golden Compass (As could have been predicted, it made LOTS more money in Europe than in North America, which is exactly the same with the books it's based on. Thus, the North American producers nixed the remaining 2 movies, even though the 1st made something like $400 million worldwide! :unsure)
  • Punisher: War Zone (For the tone & feel, this was the best Punisher movie yet! It really felt like Garth Ennis' Punisher comics brought to life! But it only made like $7.9 million at the box office, so basically NOBODY saw it! :()
  • SPAWN! (I DID enjoy the movie, quite a lot, but I'm mainly listing it to tick off robstyle! ;))

Here are my first picks:

1) The Mist
2) The Children Under the Stairs
3) Joe Dirt
4) The Game

Joe Dirt is one of my all time faves :)

Dead Mans Shoes...don't know how well known this movie is outside of the UK but it's one of the most powerful films i've ever seen. Paddy Considine totally owns it.

I have to agree on Gattaca.

Adding a few:
The Commitments
My Favorite Year
Open Range
Tora Tora Tora
Englishman who went up a hill...

Here's some more:

Primer - Very very good time travel movie. The only one with a scientifically probable version of time travel.

Iron Giant - I'll second PantheraGem on this. Awesome movie.
Speed Racer - And a second for Jack T Chance's choice. It has the perfect balance of being true to the original series while updating it for today's market.

Outlander, Beowulf from a -hunt the escaped alien predator- in 11th century Norway twist.

Gattaca
Stranger than Fiction
Simon Birch

not under rated but not appreciated any more
Cool Hand Luke

Here's my vote...

Almost Heroes - starring Chris Farley, Matthew Perry, and Eugene Levy. Not to mention the gorgeous Lisa Barbuscia! :love

I laugh my ass off every time I watch this movie!!! :lol

The Wook

ps~here's Chris' reaction shot when he hears the mother Eagle's shriek as she's coming back for yet another attack! :lol

Stranger than Fiction
Simon Birch

These are great movies. Stranger than fiction was really refreshing at the time. There's always a sea of crap coming out in theaters and I rarely go anymore.

Simon Birch is one of the best coming of age movies there is. There's one part in the movie that I don't think is done as well as it could have been, so you almost laugh, but then you immediately get your heart ripped out. It's awful. What a great movie.

Idiocracy- It may have good ratings now but I felt it was woefully underated when it came out. It may be satire but as with the best sci-fi, 80% of it's content is bang on the money for attitudes in this day and age.

The Spirit. Its one of the most "comic" comic book films ive ever seen. People didnt get it like how people dont tend to get Adam West Batman. All the comic artists and writers I have ever met loved The Spirit but the general public just dont understand it or its humour. Great film but just made about 50 yrs too late!

Thought of another today: Noises Off.

It's a movie that is essentially exactly like the play, but it is totally awesome and hilarious. I totally recommend seeing the movie, or if your local theater is good and does it sometime, see it live. Sooo so funny. Such a good time from start to finish.

Q - Winged Serpent - David Carradine and a truly inspired, manic Michael Moriarty in an insane hybrid of Mean Streets and King Kong. TOTAL ENTERTAINMENT.

Amazon Women on the Moon - John Landis 80s sketch comedy, as funny as Python.

Scarecrow - Al Pacino and Gene Hackman as drifters in 1972. Vintage New Hollywood realism.

I love "Noise Off", fun Flick!

I'll add "Identity".
