mitcheg1's 2015 Halloween Costume Contest Entry - Honey Lemon

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

A bit more progress today! For the dress I found a dress my wife had that was close in style and a pretty good fit for my daughter so I used it to free hand a template for the material.

I found this wonderful metallic fuscia colored material that I really liked! However, it sparked a debate in the house about what color Honey Lemon's dress actually is. I'll let you all chime in. I think it's a good match

Hope to start seeing some big pieces coming together over the next week or so! See you then.

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

I like it. I think the real challenge will be finding the color for the helmet. It looks like the helmet and the dress are the same color.

You can paint always paint a small sample and take it with you to the fabric store? Maybe a pearlescent paint?

Great progress so far!!!

I think I have a solution to the helmet paint. I found a glitter fuscia spray that is a close match in color and the glitter gives it the same shimmery ffect as the fabric. Hopefully it will work.

Made some progress on the dress! First time working with fabric (and piping on curves)!

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

I love the paint job. I have a question, wouldn't it be easier to paint the helmet pieces separate ( purple and orange). I see a lot of people that paint foam all together and I'm barely getting into it. Thank you.

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

I think each of us has a technique we're more comfortable with! I prefer to have a fully assembled piece before I paint as it's in it's final form. I'm always afraid of cracking the paint if I have to assemble after painting. Though I will admit it makes masking a pain in the butt!

I made a lot of progress on the purse. It's basically a foam structure with a 3mm foam outer shell. I used piping and hem for the edge details and ping pong balls will be sprayed with a translucent paint to create the look of Honey's purse. Hope you like how it's coming together. I still need to figure out how to illuminate the screen. I want to use EL tape, but the store that used to carry it no longer has it and I can't find a large enough piece online.

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

I prefer painting everything separately then just being super careful during assembly if possible. Taping off things annoys the crap outta me

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

So I need some input. I'm struggling with figuring out the color of Honey Lemon's chest piece. It appears to me to be red, but my daughter thinks it's the orange that is the pinstripes in her helmet. Anyone have any thoughts or insight into this?

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

The chest looks a red where the helmet looks orange ?

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

It's been a mad scramble to the end, but I got it finished. I plan to go back and add more detail to the chest piece in the future, but this will have to do.

The weather was not cooperating the last few days. Temp dropped, which made the paint dry much slower and it was crazy windy! Came up with a clever solution to keep my pieces from blowing across the yard with fresh paint on them. I took some T pins and pushed then through a large piece of foam. Then I stuck my pieces to the pin. Worked really well!

Re: Honey Lemon - Big Hero 6

I've been following this build ever since I saw the movie. Can't wait to see it completed.
