Re: 3 Ft Fiberglass Firefly
Projected cost...
Well... I will estimate.
The 6 foot starships are awkward to assemble with the 3 ft. nacelles hanging out back, and the 30" saucer is a challenge to build.
Laying up a ship takes a couple days of hard work. And 250 worth of resin and glass cut to patterns.
I tell you this to explain the cost savings on a 3ft. Firefly model, and that is, that the Firefly fuselage unit will be strong, and built in just a few halves glued together, and from my standpoint, laying the glass, it'll be fairly easy compared to gigantic saucers and 3' warp engines.
So I'm aiming for well under 500, and closer to 250.
If they are easy to mold, I'll pass on that savings to you.
I'll build one to show the gearmotors used and the lighting, as well as the retracting gear setup. There will be a plywood brace included in the kit, added to the floor of the ship.
I am going to add all the big details. You can add more when you build your ship.
Time is of the essence, so I'm going to concentrate on the Firefly body.
Then the extras.
Alex, you inspired me, and I'd like to use some of your expertise in Firefly construction on this model, having seen your beautiful Firefly model, and 3ft. paper model, I think you are most qualified to contribute. And I'll make you a kit to repay your help.
I'm going to have pictures of the hull parts soon, and my plan to make the engines as well as the retracting gear.
Last night I decided that I'm going to use urethane for the molds instead of silicone (like I used silicone for my 6ft starship molds. Those molds are huge, and cost over 1000, and are still good, but on a smaller project, I feel that I can use the cheaper stuff to get 20 pulls or more from.
I'll keep the masters so if I had to make new molds they could be re-done.
This'll save us cash (out front expense) for the molds.
I like urethane, and my phaser molds are as good as the day I made them (4yrs ago).
So don't worry too much about saving alot, I will make this kit affordable.
And very accurate, or I won't put my name on it.
You can help give me ideas for this kit.. I will do a good job on this starship.
This is my first non StarTrek project in years, except some big R/C aircraft I built, so I'm very excited.
The rotating ring is open to design ideas, and the design of the running side engines with spinning fans inside and blue leds glowing in the back of them, is in the plan, but time is of the essence, so I'm going to get this bird done soon. The main body halves will be roughed out this week.
Opinions?
Thanks,
Ron
