Scale model kits available soon

This is my new project.
I'm making a 1/2 studio scale size, at 36 inches, accurate and affordable shell kits for builders.
Like my phasers and 66 inch TOS starship, this will be a shell kit, reccomended for experienced builders.
I am developing the masters right now, and I expect to be building light weight fiberglass Firefly class starships in a couple months.
They will have the rotating main engine and the side engines will work also, as will the shuttles and landing gear, cargo bay, ect..
They will weigh only about 8 lbs.
Anyone interested?
Thanks,
Ron

Re: 3 Ft Fiberglass Firefly

That would be an awesome size for this ship.:thumbsup I have the tiny x-mas tree version sitting by my desk at work. I would love a good sized one for my collection.

Re: 3 Ft Fiberglass Firefly

How can you make a studio-scale model of a computer generated ship? :confused

It´s the scale that counts, not that it´s just a CGI model ;) And I personally love to see CG ships translated into real models such as the BSG ships.

There's no "standard studio-scale". Without a studio model ever existing, how can it be 1/2 studio-scale? It'll be 1/90th according to the intended "in-universe" scale, but it can't be 1/2 anything that doesn't exist.

And as a big Firefly fan, I think this is really cool, but this is bugging me.

Re: 3 Ft Fiberglass Firefly

Interest here as well and there was a studio model used in Serenity for the crash landing.

Re: 3 Ft Fiberglass Firefly

I was told there was a 6 foot model.
I'm interested in getting the details right, like retracting landing gear that lock in the down position, so the foot has to fit in the gear doors by having the toes of the foot fold.
Getting the ship's shape right will be no problem, and I'm going to cast it so the cockpit lid with the windsheild comes off to light up the control panels inside, and the center section in front of the rotating ring will lift off to work on the gearmotor, and lighting.
I like to hang my models, so I don't need fixed gear, but I like the ability to deploy the gear, since they have plenty of room to fit anyway.
Lastly, I'm going to mold the main body in 2 halves.
I want to get this model right, so I'll post pix for you to check out as I get them ready for molding.
Besides the actual size of the studio model, I think 36" is a good impressive size model for us to build in all the working blinkies, and twirlies.
Are there any other ideas to incorporate into this model?
Thanks,
Ron

I would be interested relative to cost.
I know you can't give an accurate price, but ballpark?
$250
$500
$750
I need to know how much to start setting aside now,
so that I can order when you are ready to sell.

Also, you mention details, but I don't know how that works.
My only advanced modeling experience is with 1/32nd scale, vacuform aircraft,
which generally have NO details whatsoever.
Would these be resin details to go with the fiberglass shell?

Just as a note, 1/90th scale sounds close enough to HO scale to display with
the British streamliner based Altrans hovertrain replica I have on my future projects list!

Same here. :)

Can't wait to see some pics...!

Re: 3 Ft Fiberglass Firefly

Projected cost...

Well... I will estimate.
The 6 foot starships are awkward to assemble with the 3 ft. nacelles hanging out back, and the 30" saucer is a challenge to build.
Laying up a ship takes a couple days of hard work. And 250 worth of resin and glass cut to patterns.

I tell you this to explain the cost savings on a 3ft. Firefly model, and that is, that the Firefly fuselage unit will be strong, and built in just a few halves glued together, and from my standpoint, laying the glass, it'll be fairly easy compared to gigantic saucers and 3' warp engines.
So I'm aiming for well under 500, and closer to 250.
If they are easy to mold, I'll pass on that savings to you.

I'll build one to show the gearmotors used and the lighting, as well as the retracting gear setup. There will be a plywood brace included in the kit, added to the floor of the ship.

I am going to add all the big details. You can add more when you build your ship.
Time is of the essence, so I'm going to concentrate on the Firefly body.
Then the extras.

Alex, you inspired me, and I'd like to use some of your expertise in Firefly construction on this model, having seen your beautiful Firefly model, and 3ft. paper model, I think you are most qualified to contribute. And I'll make you a kit to repay your help.

I'm going to have pictures of the hull parts soon, and my plan to make the engines as well as the retracting gear.
Last night I decided that I'm going to use urethane for the molds instead of silicone (like I used silicone for my 6ft starship molds. Those molds are huge, and cost over 1000, and are still good, but on a smaller project, I feel that I can use the cheaper stuff to get 20 pulls or more from.
I'll keep the masters so if I had to make new molds they could be re-done.
This'll save us cash (out front expense) for the molds.
I like urethane, and my phaser molds are as good as the day I made them (4yrs ago).
So don't worry too much about saving alot, I will make this kit affordable.
And very accurate, or I won't put my name on it.
You can help give me ideas for this kit.. I will do a good job on this starship.
This is my first non StarTrek project in years, except some big R/C aircraft I built, so I'm very excited.
The rotating ring is open to design ideas, and the design of the running side engines with spinning fans inside and blue leds glowing in the back of them, is in the plan, but time is of the essence, so I'm going to get this bird done soon. The main body halves will be roughed out this week.
Opinions?

Thanks,
Ron

Re: 3 Ft Fiberglass Firefly

Any chance of doing a 2 foot version? 3 feet is a littl big for my beign able to display... at 2 feet I'd buy for sure!
