Got a wild hare and decided to whip me up one of these.

And the actual ball in the movie.

Can't say I'm pleased with the grain on the ball and my stain is a little red, but I think overall it looks good. I'm picking up some new balls today that will hopefully have a better grain. This ball also had a band right where the text is that wouldn't take the stain too well. Stupid craft store balls, I had to go through eight balls to find one that was actually close to being symetrical. The next batch is from a woodworking supply and should be much better.

Here is a "test" engrave.

That is a fine ball.

You had to do a piece from one of my favorite movies. That is great.

Very nice, how did you engrave the name?

If you don't mind sharing, I'd like to know as well. You acheived very sharp lines in the engraving.

VERY nice. I'd like to know how you got such a smooth gloss coat? Looks great for a "proto". :thumbsup :thumbsup

Very nice balls. That would be sweet to have our names on them along with the movie rep.

I'd like a set I lost my first ones in my divorce.

Nice finish also.

the red were crimes of passion right?

if i only had one red ball id be pretty upset too :lol

very cool prop though. the engraving looks awesome. have you given thought to custom ones? (yea, its been asked, but dammit its important :) )

i think there was a run of these shortly after the movie came out, but that was years ago (pre tom cruise being a nut). i havent seen those balls in a long time.

Okay wood guys I need your help.

I went out and got new balls on Friday. They're beautiful, round, symetrical balls. Not all lopsided and funny looking, like my old balls. I've been playing with them all weekend, and they're great. :angel

My only problem, is getting said balls to take stain evenly. No matter what I do with sanding, etc. the equator of the ball doesn't take the stain well. I'm assuming this is a result of the lathe process and would like to know if anyone has any ideas for overcoming it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Pre-Stain Conditioner ?

may be the ticket

Pre-Stain Conditioner

DonÂ’t stain the wood, color the finish.

Wood takes stain unevenly, this is why violin makers put the color in the varnish to get a highly colored finish with nice even wood color showing through.

There are various transparent metal acid dye additives you can use to add color to certain finishes.

Here are some production pieces. Maybe these will help a little:
