Interest Ahsoka - The Map ball - several options (grouped project Wonderknight & eethan)

I just came across this! Awesome! I'll be picking up one... Option 1 or 2, not sure yet.
Is there a specific "Megaminx" ball that works, like a model number or name/title? I've never heard of them before.
Beautiful (and complex!) work, you two! :)
Hi, thank you for your interest,
the base toy is a megaminx traiphum. The option 2, full printed ball is currently available on the website and doesn't require a megaminx, it's a full static version. The option 1 will be back in stock somewhere in january.
cheers

Thanks for the info, eethan. I think I'm gonna go with the option 1 (not that I'll ever "play" with it). I'll keep an eye out on the website for them to show up.

Is there a difference between the black and clear options (besides the obvious clear option being clearer)? Does one "print" better than the other?

Thanks again for offering this (and ALL else you offer)!

Hi, here is slightly corrected answer to that question I posted a few pages back:

To be completely honest, there isn't much difference between both, we just did this to ensure people could chose what they were more comfortable with. The black option is more opaque of course, however it is not fully opaque, it is black tinted transparent resin to start with.

We printed the clear tiles on the new mono 6KS machine and the black tiles on the older but much more expensive mono X 4K machine. We did a lot of testing to ensure basically the same result on all tiles, for this reason, the transparent tiles are printed at 0.04mm layers height and are looking awesome like this, that new machine and new splicer with better anti-aliasing are very impressive and easy to use.
The black tiles are printed at 0.02mm layer height to ensure similar details, so they take much longer to produce for Julie but we wanted the best quality possible for you guys.
With a very quick sanding, they will both give a really great result :)
there are several posts from US or customers explaining their builds if you need help or examples :)
this post in a quick explanation of Julie's process for the kits she finished herself:

Cheers

Eethan, you forget what an idiot I am. But I think you're saying... there's no real difference between black and transparent?

yes, basically. they are done with different machines and different resins colour (same brand and model though), but we did several tests to make sure we found settings that would make them as similar as possible.
In any case, they need a bit of sanding with a semi rigid caul and 600 or so grit and they will be super smooth :)
cheers

eethan - any update on when the Map kits will be back up? You mentioned Jan and it's closing on the end. I dropped the ball on this early last year, but my ball showed up reminding me I never got around to ordering the kit.

Hi,
Julie is working at printing the kits now. She'll prepare all that and they'll be on her website in the next few days.
Cheers

Okay, I ordered the Traiphum Megamix Ball from speedcubeshop.com (just under $30 shipped to the USA). So whenever the kits are ready, just let me know. :)

Picked up my Megamix ball from a friends last weekend and my pieces arrived today. Very nice prints, wish I could get such "clear" pieces right out of the resin printer. Shame it's getting painted!

Mine arrived yesterday. There are a LOT of pieces! I know they tell you that, but when you see it... wow! They are very clean prints and should clean up easily. I'm glad they included a "map" to show where they all go.
The amount of time, care, and work that went into creating all these is just amazing. AWESOME job, eethan and WonderKnight! You should be extremely proud in what you've created. And we are extremely lucky because of it!
Many thanks!
Chris

Making progress. I used Montana Gold - Chrome gold with a clear acrylic gloss and just finished the matte black scribed lines. Also found a stand on thingiverse for some other version of the map.

Will do the silver accents next with rub n buff, then figure out how to get that iridescent stained look.

Of course I got the gold Megamix ball (cause it didn't have the stickers applied) but I guess I'm painting that...
