Millennium Falcon Bunk Bed Build - TFA Details 5/8 Scale

I have a 1 1/2 year old doughter.. Im praying for the Day she tell me to transform her bed in to a millennium Falcon... Now I just hoping she likes star wars. Amazing job... Amazing!

DANG! I'm going to have to invite you over and get you to work on ours! :) Excellent update!

Quick (and early) update tonight. As promised, I installed brackets on the cockpit floor. I made sure to mark each bracket and hole location carefully since the hardware is second hand and not uniform. I'm pretty sure the 50 cent sticker is still on one of them. This shot also shows the angled cut of the edges.

After a bit of massaging (banging) into place, we made sure it was square and level. My son's expression is the result of a dad joke... I told him that I was "floored" that it was square. You just heard a trombone in your head, didn't you? WAH WAH

As much sarcasm and jokes as I put into the commentary, you may be surprised that I meant something last post. I had him test the weight limit :lol But I was like 78% confident it would not collapse.

Even more impressive is when I stood on it (not that I'm "Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons" large or anything). It's quite sturdy and when I add the final spoke underneath and console, it will be very solid. I plan to start on the base of the console this weekend and maybe finish up the smaller ring and spokes on the very front. That's it for now but I'll keep building.

Lol! I was making a joke that you could use it in your build.
I just couldn't resist. Thanks Panaflex!
Fantastic! Original solution for an expensibe problem
I appreciate that, lateraluz. With your skill, you could turn plywood, paint, and Christmas lights into anything! I'm sure your daughter will like Star Wars, too. As parents, it's our job to put what's close to our heart, close to theirs. Make sure it's the very best!

Thanks, SK! I was just thinking of inviting myself down for a weekend :D But first, you'll have to build the berths in the falcon for us to sleep in :lol

My 6 year old daughter just came by and saw the bed, she was extremely impressed. The blinking lights vid won her over. She said "I want a bed like that!", to which the only possible reply was "I want one too..."

Hey what are kids for if not testing structural load limits.
Amen! :lol

Time to break out the jigsaw, FF! It's been a lot of work (especially those lights) but worth every minute. The kids will have a bed that they can rub in all their friends faces... er... I mean will enjoy and remember for a lifetime. :D

Awesome work man! I built an Tie fighter bunk bed for my 6 year old, but it isn't even close to your professionalism!

Wow super cool, great read, much comedy, great Dad and keep up the good work! The face on your daughter is classic. Get that look from two all the time.

It was a beautiful weekend which means lawn care and baseball games but I got a few things done. I added another support under the centerline of the floor. This will serve as a support for the outer skin when I get it wrapped up.

I cut eight more spokes that will connect the ring to the center window. Again, lots of angles. I did paint them as well.

And the center window which will require a lot of filler!

After all the cutting, I was left with this shape. I intend to cover it with glossy red automotive paint and sell it to a hipster for an ungodly amount as “art”. Ah, but behind that is something I'm very excited about. I found three 4x8 panels of wood at Restore. These are about 1/4" thick and flexible enough to wrap around the outside of the falcon. I was eyeing these same panels at Lowe's but found them there for a third of the price!

I’d like to thank everyone for viewing, liking, and commenting. It helps to keep me focused, jigsawing and filing Christmas lights into the wee hours. I’ll keep building!

Professionalism? You saw the skate board sanding post, right? lol Thanks, Wajo. I'd like to see that Tie Fighter bed!

Thank you, Z! I'll keep at it and promise to include more hilarious child labor. :lol

Restore is a great place!

Excellent find on the 4x8 material! Awesome update as always. Have you found a new love for wood filler and sandpaper? ;)

You and I should buy stock in Elmer's or perhaps consider a sponsorship! I put the first coat on the small ring today but didn't take pics. I'll get a proper update tomorrow.

My apologies once again for those who are following this build. I fully intended to work and update several days ago but haven’t had time for both. I began cutting out the sides of the center console.

After massaging them to match better, I created supports from 2x2’s and it started to take shape! What I did NOT take into account, however, is that a majority of the edges should have been angled. It’s hard to tell from these pictures but there are several gaps. Time to invest in a bigger bucket of wood filler!

I got a couple layers of filler/paint on the ring and although it’s not perfect, it’ll work. If anyone asks why the ring looks beat up, I’ll tell them it’s because the kids flew through an asteroid field.

I’m still working on the control panels (which are going to be a PAIN) but here’s what I have assembled so far. You can’t miss those gaps now! I plan on stretching a layer of vinyl over it so I’m not too worried. One more thing you'll notice about this picture... I chose to work on the falcon rather than mow my lawn. :lol

I’m trying to figure out the best way to put together functional (moving) yokes. I have several PVC joints and whatnot but I don’t know about mounting. I haven’t ruled out mounting them to the ground but I’m not fond of the idea. If I mount it to the console, do I go top or bottom? I can’t possibly go yoke-less! I’ll cipher that out, procrastinate, then… keep building!
