Hey Metal Gear fans! Thought I would add my WIP prosthetic arm to the collection of cool stuff here. Unfortunately it is not 100% accurate - some compromises have to be made in order to actually wear the thing. The fingers will be simplified by only casting the red portions, leaving the grey parts represented by the glove underneath. The slanted plates at the cuff are omitted because they would completely prohibit movement of your wrist. I had to favor scale/practicality over accuracy, as including those parts would only be possible by enlarging or distorting the rest of the build. There are also some details that I didn't see until I found this thread, so I'm going to try to add those in before molding continues. Everything in the master is made out of 3mm Celtec.

Despite the obvious pitfalls, I plan to cast these in Smooth Cast 300 (and maybe 65D because I have a lot lying around). I am 6'2", so it's probably longer than most people need it to be. The length of the arm can be customized by shaving down strategic points, like the inner elbow. The 65D comes out flexible, so a slit could be made to accommodate wider arms than mine.

I'm waiting on more silicone rubber to continue, but here is the progress so far:

QdJWOIu.jpg

The arm is not as uniformly tubular as it looks in that picture - it flares out at the base, but perhaps not quite enough :\

zlQAv1n.jpg

Close-up of the knuckle plates. I hope this method works, because I really don't want to cast each of the eight pieces required per hand one at a time.

ExTTPNA.jpg

This is the first time I have tried using BBs as registration keys - something I thought up when my last mold didn't like to stay aligned. I think it works pretty swell, as it is both extremely easy to add them to the mold, and the mold actually holds itself together like a true puzzle.

Thanks for looking! I hope to be casting these by this weekend, and painting soon after!

Hey everyone,

Long time RPF lurker and MGS fan, just wanted to show off some of my costumes and props.

MGS4 Raiden from 2011
Solid Snake and MGR Raiden from 2012
Gray Fox from 2014

PSG1 was a cardboard/foam/PVC build, one of my first props. Same with the stinger. Raiden armor is mostly EVA foam on tights. Gray Fox helm by Stealth, finished by me; suit was a sub dye painted by me and sewn by Unicron Sushi.

See more of my MGS stuff at http://facebook.com/EffektdCosplay/

Great stuff! That Grey Fox body suit is especially good looking. Is the Raiden armor permanently affixed to the tights?

Yeah, the armor was permanently attached to the tights. I wore a layer beneath the outer suit, for warmth and to minimize sweat in the armor since the best I could do was spot treat exposed fabric. Costume is sadly gone, but I'm going to combine the sub dye method with foam armor for a v2 of MGS4.

Finished Snake's arm with 14 hours to sleep before I can finally play!

I really want a 1:1 arm for display, the tiny one i got with my special edition is nice but the hand seems way too small. As soon as i figure out how to make a mold of my arm i may give it a go to make one. If my friend would let me take a look at her prosthetic arm and hand i bet i could get some idea to even make it work while on display but I'm not sure how to ask if i can tinker with something that pricey lol. Rumor has it that the company that made the 1:1 arm for the japanese edition may make more and sell them if demand is high but i can't imagine the price. As it is you're looking at 400.00 from playasia for the japanese special edition. You could probably get a 1:1 scale one made for that.

After playing the phantom pain for a while i felt like making a solid eye out of whatever i had lying in the scrap box.
Its mostly styrene cutoffs and waterslide decals from a jet model.

I'm currently working on Venom Snake's sneaking suit from TPP, but as I wait for webbing for my SPIE harness I decided to take a crack at the props, starting with the iDroid. I really wanted one of the official ones for the iPhone 5, but now I have an iPhone 6, plus the cases themselves go for a ton of money now that they're secondhand. So, I decided to make my own iDroid, out of EVA/craft foam. I layered the foam up around a "frame" that fits around my normal phone case; this way, I don't have to worry about removing one to use the other. My phone just slips right into the iDroid. After building it, it got coated in black PlastiDip and then orange, white, and silver acrylics for the details. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the actual iPhone 5 case, and it lacks ports for the back camera, side buttons, and Lightning port, but my phone slips out easily enough that it's not a problem.

Been working on an iDroid too, it's at its 3rd rebuild already.
I based it on the official case, then modified it so it looks closer to the in-game model. It's built around my Android phone, still trying to figure out how to make it "print-friendly".
There's still a bunch of mechanical things I need to figure out - like how to install the phone, and where the batteries will go.

So not a perfect clone of Snake's from Metal Gear Solid 3, but this is my latest AR build.
Colt 604 Clone 03.jpg

I'm sure you guys will notice the primary difference rather quickly: there is no forward assist.
My rifle is a Colt 604 / M16 clone while Snake supposedly uses an XM16E1 in MGS3. The Colt 604/M16 is the rifle the USAF ordered and took delivery of in 1963. The Army wanted the forward assist added and took delivery in early 1964. The main reason mine is a Colt 604 is because the upper and bolt carrier group I stumbled upon at a gun show were of that design / origin. I also set out to build a proper rifle based on the upper, not a dedicated replica of Snake's.

As for the one we see in Metal Gear Solid 3, I have a few accuracy problems with it and wouldn't have been able to make it in good faith even if I had the proper upper. Since the we see Snake with it in 1964, the first year they were delivered, it would make logical sense that his rifle should be an early-production XM16E1. However, that is where the problems start.
-Snake's rifle has a A1 "Birdcage" flash hider. Early XM16E1's would have had a improved three-prong flash hider which was in production until 1967, ending shortly after the M16A1 started production. The Birdcage could be expected on models manufactured in late 1967 and after, including transitional builds of non A1 builds.
-Snake's rifle shows a parkerized bolt carrier group. Like the flash hider, the parkerized BCG didn't start until about the time of the M16A1 and an earlier XM16E1 should have a chrome BCG with forward assist cuts. On my rifle, the bolt carrier group is transitional: slick-sided carriers were chrome until late in production, when they just started parkerizing whatever they had already made.
-Snake's XM16E1 shows a lower receiver with a "full-fence", the reinforcement rib that goes along the top of the mag well and then around the mag release button, which started when production of the M16A1 began. For an early XM16E1, Snake's rifle should have the "partial fence" lower like my build.

To make my rifle correct for an early XM16E1, all I would need to do is change the upper and bolt carrier. The rest of the parts are correct for a early or transitional rifle.

Now this also brings to mind how this place is a bad influence on me. Looking at the Patriot, bad choices are in my head now.
One company, Rocky Mountain Arms, made one. They offered it with an A1 upper or a flat-top upper. The Boss' Patriot has a XM16E1 upper with no shell deflector, so aside from the fact that they don't make them anymore, they are still wrong.
Another company, Snake Hound Machine, made one but it was even less accurate. It was an A4 flat-top with a removable A2 carry handle and a commercial railed gas bloc. That said, the company is obviously made up of some massive MGS fans. They already have some Diamond Dog (and Diamond Doge), FOX, and MSF patches in their store. They also made the muzzle brake from the Patriot. The 5.56 version seems to be out of stock, but I have dimensions for it and can model it and get it made if I need to.
Some places mention The Patriot being based off of the M231 FPW, but that is incorrect because that weapon didn't come to be until 1980 (plus the buffer tube is too long and the selector area is incorrect for an M231 on The Boss' weapon)

Based on my observations, a proper Patriot would need the following parts:
XM16E1 Upper Receiver w/ rear sight and proper "teardrop" forward assist
M16A1 "Full Fence" lower receiver w/ A1 pistol grip.
Parkerized BCG w/ FA cuts
Modern-production AR Pistol barrel w/ gas system (I need to measure for length)
Modern-production AR Pistol buffer tube/receiver extension
Free-float handguard tube (Possibility for off-the-shelf exists)
Fancy gas block (Probably custom or made from railed gas block)
Gargantuan muzzle device (SHM or custom using the measurements)
Beta Companys C-Mag (or the cheaper Korean version)

The problem is that I don't need an AR-based pistol, nor do I really care too much for them as I find them a bit impractical. But then why am I putting so much thought into this?

You guys are terrible. :lol

Hey all,

I know this is a gear thread, but since no singular MGS costume thread exists I just wanted to show off my near-completed TPP Sneaking Suit that I wore to Comikaze in LA during Halloween weekend. Kaz is my friend Andrew (Otaku & Fit on FB), who wrote a popular Afghanistan Venom Snake tutorial linked in a previous post.

You can see more of my cosplay on my facebook page at:

http://facebook.com/EffektdCosplay

The vest was sewn as two layers of spandex (normal spandex for the inside, rubberized spandex for the outside) with a layer of foam in the middle. The outer edges of the pieces were sewn then the lines inside were sewn to create the muscles. The front and back were sewn separately, then joined at the shoulders and elastic straps on the sides.

I also found a knockoff PSG1 airsoft on ebay, and managed to get it during a sale period; normally it's 150+45 shipping, but I got it for 85+45.

FullSizeRender.jpg

It's still on sale on ebay, I found it here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PSG-1-AEG-a...612072?hash=item2805f4a968:g:VXIAAOSwPcVVy4vH

To finish off the suit I've ordered a proper theatrical prosthetic beard, along with wetsuit boots to use since they have the details and the sleek silhouette I want, and I'll be remaking the bionic arm and fashioning actual glove parts and gaiters. I also won eBay auctions on two vintage silver Sony Walkmans (a Sony WM16 and a Sony Walkman F1).

wm16.jpg f1.jpg wmr55.jpg

Neither is the WM R55 from TPP (the 3rd photo), but unfortunately those go for a pretty hefty sum now. I have to choose between them; the WM16 has the bigger window with black around it but is nonfunctional; the F1 looks less accurate (more like the silver+blue TPS-L2 from GZ and Guardians of the Galaxy), but it is partially functional, which would be nice to have with the MGSV soundtrack converted to tape.

More MGSV Venom Snake stuff, I remade my bionic arm after Comikaze, since that first one was made the night before the con. v2 is all just 6mm and 3mm craft foam, sealed with PlastiDip and then painted with Krylon Color Master red and some acrylics for details.

Been taking a few (functional) liberties with the design. In particular, the lanyard loop (I think I did ok with making it look like it belongs there).

The data/charging port is definitely inaccurate, but since we never actually get to see it, I figure it'll do. ;)
