So not a perfect clone of Snake's from Metal Gear Solid 3, but this is my latest AR build.
I'm sure you guys will notice the primary difference rather quickly: there is no forward assist.
My rifle is a Colt 604 / M16 clone while Snake supposedly uses an XM16E1 in MGS3. The Colt 604/M16 is the rifle the USAF ordered and took delivery of in 1963. The Army wanted the forward assist added and took delivery in early 1964. The main reason mine is a Colt 604 is because the upper and bolt carrier group I stumbled upon at a gun show were of that design / origin. I also set out to build a proper rifle based on the upper, not a dedicated replica of Snake's.
As for the one we see in Metal Gear Solid 3, I have a few accuracy problems with it and wouldn't have been able to make it in good faith even if I had the proper upper. Since the we see Snake with it in 1964, the first year they were delivered, it would make logical sense that his rifle should be an early-production XM16E1. However, that is where the problems start.
-Snake's rifle has a A1 "Birdcage" flash hider. Early XM16E1's would have had a improved three-prong flash hider which was in production until 1967, ending shortly after the M16A1 started production. The Birdcage could be expected on models manufactured in late 1967 and after, including transitional builds of non A1 builds.
-Snake's rifle shows a parkerized bolt carrier group. Like the flash hider, the parkerized BCG didn't start until about the time of the M16A1 and an earlier XM16E1 should have a chrome BCG with forward assist cuts. On my rifle, the bolt carrier group is transitional: slick-sided carriers were chrome until late in production, when they just started parkerizing whatever they had already made.
-Snake's XM16E1 shows a lower receiver with a "full-fence", the reinforcement rib that goes along the top of the mag well and then around the mag release button, which started when production of the M16A1 began. For an early XM16E1, Snake's rifle should have the "partial fence" lower like my build.
To make my rifle correct for an early XM16E1, all I would need to do is change the upper and bolt carrier. The rest of the parts are correct for a early or transitional rifle.
Now this also brings to mind how this place is a bad influence on me. Looking at the Patriot, bad choices are in my head now.
One company, Rocky Mountain Arms, made one. They offered it with an A1 upper or a flat-top upper. The Boss' Patriot has a XM16E1 upper with no shell deflector, so aside from the fact that they don't make them anymore, they are still wrong.
Another company, Snake Hound Machine, made one but it was even less accurate. It was an A4 flat-top with a removable A2 carry handle and a commercial railed gas bloc. That said, the company is obviously made up of some massive MGS fans. They already have some Diamond Dog (and Diamond Doge), FOX, and MSF patches in their store. They also made the muzzle brake from the Patriot. The 5.56 version seems to be out of stock, but I have dimensions for it and can model it and get it made if I need to.
Some places mention The Patriot being based off of the M231 FPW, but that is incorrect because that weapon didn't come to be until 1980 (plus the buffer tube is too long and the selector area is incorrect for an M231 on The Boss' weapon)
Based on my observations, a proper Patriot would need the following parts:
XM16E1 Upper Receiver w/ rear sight and proper "teardrop" forward assist
M16A1 "Full Fence" lower receiver w/ A1 pistol grip.
Parkerized BCG w/ FA cuts
Modern-production AR Pistol barrel w/ gas system (I need to measure for length)
Modern-production AR Pistol buffer tube/receiver extension
Free-float handguard tube (Possibility for off-the-shelf exists)
Fancy gas block (Probably custom or made from railed gas block)
Gargantuan muzzle device (SHM or custom using the measurements)
Beta Companys C-Mag (or the cheaper Korean version)
The problem is that I don't need an AR-based pistol, nor do I really care too much for them as I find them a bit impractical. But then why am I putting so much thought into this?
You guys are terrible. :lol
