BLACK SPIRE 101: The Things You Should Know Heading Into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

You’ve taken your first step into a larger world… or rather, we’re about to! The highly-anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge finally opens on May 31st at the Disneyland Park and August 29th at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. These new lands are massive and promise two new attractions, themed cuisine, incredible merchandise, details and Easter eggs galore, and the opportunity for guests to live their own Star Wars adventure. With all the hype surrounding that galaxy far, far away finally coming to our own planet, I’ve compiled some information you need to know and perhaps some stuff you don’t know about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

What and Where Exactly is Galaxy’s Edge?

Black Spire Outpost is the name of the village inside of the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The village is closely associated with the geological formations that surround it. As the largest settlement on the planet Batuu, Black Spire Outpost is an infamous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space. (Disney)
Many names and places are associated with Galaxy’s Edge, which itself exists at two different Disney Parks on opposite coasts. To keep it simple, here’s what you need to know. The Disneyland Park in California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Florida are both getting identical (or close to it) Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge themed lands.

The story is, guests are visiting Black Spire Outpost, which is on the planet of Batuu on the edge of the Outer Rim Territories. Black Spire was briefly mentioned by L3-37 to Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story, (with other references to characters in the land, like Dok-Ondar, making their way into the film as a means of planetary product placement,) and while it is canon (it also appeared in the novel Thrawn: Alliances), very little else is known about it.

According to Imagineers, the planet was once a bustling trading port; but thanks to hyperspace and its remote location, it’s become a place for those who prefer to keep a low profile. Hence the name Galaxy’s Edge.

For guests, the land will exist in two parts: the village outpost occupied by the First Order, and a forest base where the Resistance has recently and secretly taken up residence for an upcoming mission.

There Will Be Limited Access to the Land
Despite the hype for the land’s grand opening, Disney says guests will need more than just park admission to set foot in Galaxy’s Edge on opening day. Reservations are required to visit Galaxy’s Edge from May 31 through June 23! Disneyland Resort Hotel guests will have guaranteed access to these reservations. Then, after June 23, Disney will offer a virtual boarding pass system with the ability to register for a time slot to visit the land.

We don’t know yet if reservations will be required to visit Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios when it opens in August. However, Disney is already warning guests that access to the land and its experiences is limited. So if you’re planning to visit either Disneyland or Walt Disney World for the opening of Galaxy’s Edge, be aware that not everyone will be able to enter the land or experience all it has to offer.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Won’t Be Open Yet

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run are the two attractions guests will be able to experience at Galaxy’s Edge. However, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will not be open on opening day, but will debut later in the year at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. This means only one attraction will be operating for guests fortunate enough to experience Galaxy’s Edge in its first few months.

Galaxy’s Edge is Set in the Time of the New Films
While the original Star Wars trilogy is the most iconic, Galaxy’s Edge is set in the time of the new films. Disney promises Easter eggs and references for all of the Star Wars films, but Galaxy’s Edge is set in the time of the conflict between the First Order and the Resistance as opposed to the Rebellion and the Empire. Original trilogy fans, like myself, should expect Kylo Ren and Rey as opposed to Darth Vader and Luke.

Be Prepared for Your Ride Vehicle
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run promises guests the chance to pilot the iconic Millennium Falcon. Well, not everyone gets to pilot the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. We now know guests will ride in a six-person cockpit, which is something large families or groups need to be aware of. Depending on where guests sit, they will have a job ranging from gunner, to engineer to pilot. While this sounds similar to the setup at Epcot’s Mission: Space, how each guest performs their task aboard Smugglers Run will impact the ride experience. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance promises to be one of the most advanced attractions guests have ever experienced at a Disney Park. The vehicle seats eight guests and will be trackless, seemingly piloted by a droid. It’s been said the ride itself will cover a range of ride experiences.

You’ve Heard These Voices Before

Fans of the original Star Tours attraction remember rookie droid pilot Rex. Now marked defective, he currently resides in the queue of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. Well, Rex will have a new gig in Galaxy’s Edge as the DJ at Oga’s Cantina, still voiced by Paul Reubens who performed Rex’s original dialogue. Frank Oz has also returned to voice Yoda who will have some sort of a vocal presence in Galaxy’s Edge.

Fans who know Nien Nunb from Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens was tracked down by Disney and recorded his character’s dialogue in the land. In addition, Jim Cummings, the voice of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, will provide the voice for the audio-animatronic of Hondo Ohnaka at Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

Similarities to Pandora – The World of Avatar

The planet of Batuu will have echoes of Pandora – The World of Avatar from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The unique alien cuisine teased for Galaxy’s Edge resembles the efforts made at Pandora. Also, guests will be able to purchase Kowakian Monkey Lizards (think of Salacious Crumb from Jabba’s Palace) to sit on their shoulders a-la Pandora Banshee.

Disney is also trying to keep any brands or recognizable symbols out of Galaxy’s Edge, much like they did in Pandora, to preserve the thematic immersion. But for Batuu, these efforts are going even farther. For instance, Coca-Cola products in Galaxy’s Edge will be sold in bottles resembling thermal detonators! Also, their labels will be printed in Aurebesh, the language of Star Wars!

New Music was Created Exclusively for Galaxy’s Edge
Everyone knows the familiar refrains of John Williams’ Star Wars themes. They’re just as iconic as the films themselves! Fans will be thrilled to learn John Williams has composed new themes exclusively for Galaxy’s Edge. Also, guests will enjoy new cantina tunes courtesy of DJ Rex at Oga’s Cantina when the land debuts.

Customizable Droids & Lightsabers

Star Wars merchandise is pretty much everywhere at the Disney Parks. Also, collectors and younglings have been able to buy lightsabers, costumes, and droids at their local toy store or supermarket for years. The question is what kind of merchandise could Galaxy’s Edge possibly produce that we haven’t already seen? Well, Disney is taking the build-your-own lightsabers and interactive droids to a whole new level!

Disney has promised a Droid Depot where guests can pick parts off a conveyor belt and construct their own customized R-series or BB-series droid. Guests will also choose a personality chip for their droid which enables them to interact with elements in Galaxy’s Edge. Additional droid accessories and non-customizable droids will be available to purchase as well.

Like a true Jedi, guests can construct their own lightsabers at Savi’s Workshop.These custom sabers are heavy and include a kyber crystal chosen by the guest. Of course, additional accessories are available to purchase, and belts purchased in Galaxy’s Edge come with clips for light saber hilts.

Strategic Entrances Created for Galaxy’s Edge
At Disneyland, guests will be able to enter Galaxy’s Edge from Critter Country, Fantasyland, and Frontierland while Disney World’s Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios will only have two entrances. Regardless of which coast guests are visiting, all entry points into the land were strategically designed. According to Imagineers, the entrances will narrow a guest’s view before expanding it upon entry for a truly cinematic reveal! That being said, not all of them will be used as entrances until crowds die down… whenever that might be.

What did Galaxy’s Edge Replace in the Parks?

For those who haven’t been to the parks in awhile, Galaxy’s Edge replaced former attractions and spaces at both parks to allow for 14 acres of that galaxy far, far away. At Disneyland, Galaxy’s Edge replaced Big Thunder Ranch, as well as space previously off-limits to guests. The Disneyland Railroad and Rivers of America were even reconfigured for this new addition!

At Disney World, Galaxy’s Edge replaced the Streets of America, the Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show, portions of the Backlot Studio Tour, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: Movie Set Adventure.

Everything You Need to Know: Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo
Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo is set in a multi-purpose transport shuttle that’s docked on top of a large hangar. Inside, guests can find Tugg’s Grub, a “traveling diner for diners traveling” which is run by Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs. His modified Sienar-Chall Utilipede Transport can be transformed into a mobile kitchen and restaurant, and he’s set up base in the hangar for all these new travelers, gathering inspiration from his time on Takodana and ingredients from across the galaxy.

Black Spire Easter Egg: The three trailer-sized cargo pods that Strono Tuggs is off-loading from his multi-purpose transport into the hangar bay contain three interesting Easter eggs: the first is stamped with the number 77, the second one (which is dangling from cables through the roof’s opened portal) is marked 80, and the last one (which is still aboard Tuggs’s Grub) is branded 83. These are the years that the films of the original Star Wars trilogy came out.

WHO: Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs

Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs has docked a food freighter loaded with fresh supplies and he’s ready to satisfy the appetites of visitors and locals alike with an array of exotic offerings. His planet-hopping travels allow him to prepare fare with unusual flavors that delight customers. His travels across the galaxy allow him to fill his pantry with exotic ingredients, and he’s proud to present Tuggs’ Grub, a “traveling diner for diners traveling,” inspired by dishes he created during his time working for Maz Kanata on Takodana. Tuggs was there when Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey and Finn landed on Takodana to see Maz Kanata, and after the events there, made his way to the Black Spire to set up his own restaurant.
WHERE: Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo

Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo is located by the entrance to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. You might want to wait until after your flight to fill up on all the delicious meals you’ll find inside the docking bay, though. Once you’ve got your grub, sit inside the spacious hangar, or grab a table in the rustic outdoor seating area surrounded by the crumbling walls of the old marketplace.

Big Name Craft Breweries Will Be Featured in Oga’s Cantina at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

The opening of Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is almost here at Disneyland Resort, and more news continues to come out. Today, we learned that Oga’s Cantina in Galaxy’s Edge will feature beverages by big-name craft brewers and cider-makers, as well as a small-name Sonoma wineries. They will make the beer, wine and cider that comes to this special eatery. Some of the familiar names include Boston Beer, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Ballast Point.
Thanks to the OC Register, we have all the details of what’s to come, as well as the Star Wars references in the name of the drink:

• Bad Motivator IPA: A India Pale Ale-style of beer made with Galaxy and Comet hops with tropical fruit tones from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico (6.0% alcohol by volume). A reference to the R5-D4 droid that Uncle Owen almost buys on Tatooine in Episode 4.
• White Wampa Ale: A Hefeweizen-style wheat beer with banana and citrus flavors from Ballast Point Brewing Co. in San Diego (ABV 4.5%). A Wampa is the snow creature that lives on Hoth and almost kills Luke in Episode 5.
• Gold Squadron Lager: A golden lager with lavender and plum flavors from Blue Point Brewing Co. in Patchogue, New York (ABV 5.0%). Gold Squadron is the rebel starfighter squadron from Episode 4.
• Gamorrean Ale: A red ale with roasted caramel and grapefruit flavors from New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colorado (ABV 5.8%). Gomorreans are the boar looking creatures guarding Jabba the Hutt in his palace in Episode 6.
• Spice Runner: A gluten-free hard apple cider with a dark red color and spices from Angry Orchard Cider Co. in Walden, N.Y. Fans of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story will certainly know of the Spice Mine on the planet Kessel, where Han famously “made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs”.

We previously told you about some of the souvenir mugs, the printed menu, and coasters that you’ll be able to find inside of Oga’s Cantina, and all of the drinks on this menu feature some kind of Star Wars reference.

You’ll even be able to order all four beers in a special Rancor Tooth beer flight board that can be yours for $75.00.
The Orange County Register details out some more information about the breweries and cidermakes with featured beverages at Oga’s Cantina:

Goldschmidt Vineyards will make the Toniray and Imperial Guard wines served in Galaxy’s Edge. The teal-colored Toniray will have citrus and orchard fruit flavors. The Imperial Guard red wine will be a robust Cabernet Sauvignon. According to Star Wars lore, Toniray is a teal-colored bubbly wine served chilled in a slim flute. Toniray was produced on the planet of Alderaan, which was destroyed by the Death Star in the original 1977 film. Clad in red robes and masked helmets, the elite Imperial Guard unit serves as bodyguards to the Galactic Emperor.
Angry Orchard is owned by Boston Beer Company, makers of Samuel Adams Boston Lager. Boston Beer is the second largest craft brewer in the U.S. based on beer sales by volume, according to the Brewers Association.
Sierra Nevada and New Belgium fall right behind Boston Beer among big craft brewers, at numbers 3 and 4 respectively on the Brewers Association list.
San Diego’s Ballast Point just opened a microbrewery and restaurant in Downtown Disney shopping district,cementing the beer-maker’s relationship with Disney.
Blue Point may be less familiar to West Coast beer drinkers. The foul-mouthed New Yorkers (the brewery’s website is littered with profanity) partnered with Anheuser-Busch’s craft brands unit in 2014.
Disney chose brewers with national reach so the Galaxy’s Edge beers could be identical at both in California and Florida.

Everything You Need to Know: Creature Stall
Looking to adopt a creature from a galaxy far, far away? Look no further than the Creature Stall in the Black Spire Marketplace! At this shop, you’re able to take a look at various cargo and crates that are holding some of the rarest creatures that were acquired from across the galaxy.

At the Creature Stall, you can find a variety of creatures that you’re sure to fall in love and welcome into your own family. After all, most of these creatures have already traveled far across the galaxy, so a trip back to your own galaxy won’t be anything too unusual. They’re sure to adapt quickly, though special attention may be needed for a Tauntaun to have an appropriate home.
From Kowakian monkey-lizards that roam the underworld of the galaxy to cute little Porgs, there’s sure to be a creature perfect for your family!

Black Spire Easter Egg: Keep an eye out for Loth-Cats at the Creature Stall.The Tooka Loth-Cat first made its appearance in the Clone Wars series and most recently in Star Wars Rebels.
WHO: Bina
Bina is the Creature Stall’s proprietor. There’s not much known about her other than she’s often traveling through various star systems to keep her store filled with unique creatures for all her customers.
WHERE: Creature Stall

The Creature Stall is located within the Merchant Row district of Black Spire. It’s next to Toydarian Toymaker, where you can find the best handmade toys if travel regulations prevent you from bringing back a creature through customs.
WHAT: Adoptable Creatures and Lovable Plush
Creatures
Let’s start with the creatures, as this stall is most famous for. The first here is the Kowakian monkey-lizards. You might recognize them from hanging around the Hutts and dealing with some rather unfriendly people. However, these creatures are sure to love you as they make a spot resting on top of your shoulder.

This creature acts much like the banshees do in Pandora over at Animal Kingdom. They even have the laughing sound that is so famously heard in the film. The monkey-lizard will also be available in blue as shown below.

There’s adorable Porgs for you to adopt, and perhaps they’ll be less meddlesome then the ones that Luke Skywalker had to deal with during his time on Ahch-to. This Porg is much like a puppet in that the mouth and wings move.

These much smaller Rathtars vibrate and move. We suggest not hauling too many of them as they might get you caught up in a rather dangerous situation, similar to the one that Han Solo and Chewbacca ended up in during The Force Awakens.

Far from it’s home on Tatooine, the Rock Wart on the left darts his tongue out when pressed.

If you’re looking for more icy creatures, there’s a few for you to pick from that are used to the frigid cold of Hoth. Tauntauns and Wampas are available for purchase, but keep in mind, some are more gentler than others. Tauntauns should not be used as sleeping bags unless absolutely necessary too.

But if those creatures aren’t your type, and you’re looking for something a little more cuddly, there’s the beloved Puffer Pig from Star Wars Rebels! They oink when you squeeze them too.

Plush Characters
Though maybe you’re not looking for a creature to cuddle, but perhaps a plush. Well, Bina has you covered as well with an assortment of plush figures of our favorite characters for you to take on your next adventure!
First up, we have Rey and Finn, accompanied by a small Porg plush.

If you’re looking for the original leaders of the Rebels and not the Resistance, you’ll find Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian (and his cape), and Chewbacca.

Maybe you’re more of a fan of the First Order and would rather pick up Kylo Ren and a Stormtrooper, as shown here.

You can also find Darth Vader, Jedi Master Yoda, and the cutest creatures from the forest moon of Endor, Ewoks!

You might also spot the Toydarian Watto and Padawan Ahsoka Tano while looking through the Creature Stall.

And of course, the galaxy’s most influential gangster, Jabba the Hutt, also received the plush treatment. At least he’s not as slimy in plush form.

Everything You Need to Know: Toydarian Toymaker

When traveling through the Black Spire Outpost, you’re sure to want something to take back with you on your long flight back to your own galaxy. This jumbled shop will house a variety of souvenirs for you so you don’t leave empty handed. Hand crafted toys and collectibles will be available for purchase made by Zabaka the Toydarian.

WHO: Zabaka
Zabaka is a Toydarian who’s set up shop here in the Black Spire Outpost to craft only the finest of toys and gifts for all travelers. You might recognize the Toydarian species from Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, where we first met Watto. If you remember well, Toydarians are immune to Jedi mind tricks, as we learned from Watto’s encounter with Qui-Gon Jinn. “Only money. No money, no parts, no deal!”

We’re sure that you won’t have to haggle with Zabaka, or that all Toydarians are the same, but it might be best to leave the Jedi mind tricks outside of the stall for the time being.

WHERE: Toydarian Toymaker

The Toydarian Toymaker shop will be a part of the Merchant Row district, where you’re sure to find other items to bring home after your travels to the Galaxy’s Edge. This toy shop will be tucked between the Black Spire Outfitters and the Creature Stall. You’ll be sure to spot her shop from her cluttered storefront, featuring crates of supplies for her toys and latest projects, such as a tauntaun rocking horse.
Zabaka will often be busy working on the latest toys and won’t have time to interact with all her travelers that pass by. Her silhouette can often be seen through the back windows of her workshop though, perhaps working on the latest doll or crafting classics like sabacc as she flits around.

WHAT: Dolls, Creatures, Ships, Games and More!

Wooden Trinkets
Featured below are some of the wooden dolls that Zabaka has crafted. From Boba Fett, Darth Vader, Stormtroopers and Admiral Ackbar and our favorite droid duo, C-3PO and R2-D2 (featured in the second picture) look great as these wooden dolls.

Also spotted here is a wooden Sandcrawler and a wooden spin toy, featuring a Rebel pilot and Chewbacca from what’s visible from this shot.
For wooden creatures, there is a carved Frog-Dog and a Convor.

There’s also this really nice wooden carved box, featuring Darth Vader, a Stormtrooper, some TIE-Fighters, Darth Vader’s TIE-Fighter, and the Galactic Empire symbol in the middle.

Ships
If wood isn’t your thing, there’s also some tin toys of our favorite modes of transportation, like the Landspeeder, Millennium Falcon and TIE-Fighter.

Games
If toys aren’t your thing and you’re more of a “push your luck” sort of person, you may be interested in purchasing. Perhaps you’re like our favorite scruffy looking, nerf-herder and are interested in Dejarik or Sabacc?
There’s a wooden version of Dejarik Board Game, mimicking the hologram version that’s often played on board the Millennium Falcon. It also comes with a checker board on the flip side if you need to calm your temper after losing like a Wookiee.

If you’re interesting in perfecting your skills so you don’t have to cheat to gain a Millennium Falcon, make sure to pick up a copy of Sabacc.

If you’re not looking for something so high-stakes and possibly a bit more accessible to the whole family, check out this matching game. This features characters throughout the galaxy, as well as some of the characters you’ll meet in the Outpost, like Hondo Oknaka, Dok Ondar, and DJ R3X.

If you’re up for a challenge, this wooden Jedi Holocron puzzle cube might be perfect for you too. Some Force may be needed to help you solve it, though.

A portable misting fan that looks an awful lot like the moisture vaporators used on Tatooine by moisture farmers in the original 1977 “Star Wars” movie. That little wooden Stormtrooper on the right is the same one a young Jyn Erso had in Rogue One.
Plush Characters
First up, we have Rey and Finn, accompanied by a small Porg plush.

If you’re looking for the original leaders of the Rebels and not the Resistance, you’ll find Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian (and his cape), and Chewbacca.

Maybe you’re more of a fan of the First Order and would rather pick up Kylo Ren and a Stormtrooper, as shown here.

You can also find Darth Vader, Jedi Master Yoda, and the cutest creatures from the forest moon of Endor, Ewoks!

You might also spot the Toydarian Watto and Padawan Ahsoka Tano while looking through the Creature Stall. That quirky little creature in the middle is a toy version of a Loth-Cat.

And of course, the galaxy’s most influential gangster, Jabba the Hutt, also received the plush treatment. At least he’s not as slimy in plush form.

Toydarian Toymaker will also sell a variety of musical instruments that look just like the ones used by the infamous cantina band, Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes.
