MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

I still haven't received mine yet, because Mattel is using the Pony Express to deliver their items.
To think that I said I'd be happy with it evening knowing it's inaccuracies is somewhat embarrassing to me now, but only because it seems they can't even perform decent quality control on their shortcuts. No lenticular? Well, okay... :( But smudges, air bubbles and scotch tape? That's infuriating!

This will be my first Matty Collector piece. I missed out but heard good things about their Ghostbusters trap. But now, this may be my only purchase from them... Shame.

Scott Neitlich A.K.A Flim Flam Man is over there barking out words such as Proud, Good Press and it's on track to sell out. Bob Gale has rebuked Mattel for their unethical behavior. Unbelievable, they have no Shame for this piece of crap they sold to the general public.

Ojo, I just finished taking it apart. I"ll take some pictures and see what I can do. It looks pretty much the same as the one taken of the in-production prototype, except pink.

There's about 12 more screw posts underneath the bottom stickers of the board, so you can't take it apart without ruining the graphics. The front interior magnet area is where the soundboard is housed, with a wire that runs down to the kick, to the speaker. That bulls eye pattern rear magnet area is tracking for footpad.

The removable exterior magnet pads are magnet grey on the interior, the red and black appear to have been sprayed on. So in addition to getting more accurate screws, you could also easily paint the magnets a more accurate color, if they currently aren't.

So that's why the footpad is too far forward, and the "Hover Board" text is squished. So that the footpad lines up nicely with the rear Magnet.

EDIT: I am loving Scott's new replies.

"The board does not use scotch tape. There may be tape in the package to keep the foam together that transfered to the board. It is not part of the product."

I guess you guys that got Scotch Tape got a bonus with your boards.

"Sounds like a great opportunity to customize your board and make it exactly how you want!
We tried to make the best board possible based on the fact their were over 30 used in the film. Not every fan will be 100% happy but we stand behind our commitment on the product."

You mean "films", right? Because there were two.

And on Bob Gale's comparison of his two boards with the Matty board.

"Always appreciate kind words. It looks like these photos do a great job of showing how vastly different each film board was!"

My hoverboard was waiting for me when I got home. Luckily mine did not have the bubble issues or anything, overall what Bob Gale said is about par, I'd give the board a B rating. I love the mini board, even made good use of it:

"The pink here, it's gonna be a hologram. It's gonna be that lenticular, shiny hologram that everybody's... y'know." (4:15)

"We did not state the board would have a lenticular. This was never a feature we noted in any communication, especially when the props we reviewed did not have a lenticular."

My god! Please post that in the Matty forums.

I'm officially done with that guy. I would say "I don't know how he keeps his job" but I've seen people worse at their job keep their position longer. :lol

Scott is a real ***** now he says the hoverboard is a TOY lol WHAT HAPPENED TO PROP REPLICA??? check out this article on what scott says about the board he has to be kidding..

All the way through the design and pre-order phase he compared it to Ghostbusters prop replicas and how accurate they were going to be be. Now he repeatedly chooses the word Toy to describe it. It isn't really all about the lack of lenticular here, yet he is choosing not to address the other issues. Well now all this talk about releasing another accurate version seems futile as he has confirmed there won't be a second run. Or maybe that's another way to make these hoverboards more desirable.

"Scott Neiltich has answered the questions that people wanted answered.

The question was...

"If they could make a board 23 years ago with a lenticular surface, how come Mattel couldn't do one in 2012?"

His Answer.

"Because the boards made "23 years ago" were expensive hand made props. The 2012 mass produced manufactured toy needed to come in at 120.

Adding a lenticular would have skyrocketed the price. Lenticulars are large extremely expensive. We did look into it and could not find a way to make it work and still deliver an affordable toy.

Making this comparison is honestly not fair. You are comparing a hand made film prop with a high budget to a mass produced toy for 120/130. It is not apples to apples at all.
"

"So there ya have it, fans of the Hoverboard were getting confuse with a prop replica with a hand made film prop.

We will know next time.

Scott Neiltich also said the Hoverboard was a success and a near sellout, but it appears there wont be a year two, and it will be a one off.

So Hoverboard fans, we still have some Time to wait to get a real hand made film prop that is the Hoverboard."

"The board does not use scotch tape. There may be tape in the package to keep the foam together that transfered to the board. It is not part of the product."

So he is saying the tape holding the two pieces together on the sides was accidental transfer from packaging?? And it happened on everyone's board? Really???

That info should definitely be posted at Matty Forum along with photos of the tape that he claims was transfers from packaging.
But I suspect he will just delete the post.

Has he responded to Bob's comments publicly, or is he dodging the fact that he dissapointed "the man"?

I suspect any of that will be deleted on sight. But if anyone wants to give it a go, Be my guest. Feel free! I'd love to see what happens.

He's hit head-on Bob's comments, but mostly just what he's said already "Can't please everyone/there are over 30 boards/we did our best", and ANYTHING about accuracy comes down to "It was just out of the price range to use the lenticular".

And about Bob's great comparison shot, just "Great shot that shows how different the movie boards were!", despite that Bob's two boards are VERY similar and Matty's board is noticeably distinct. I don't believe Scott got to the part about "You can throw eggs at me for endorsing this product".

And yet, it still doesn't use the word "toy" anywhere here, and the title even clearly says PROP REPLICA, and states it a few times throughout.

If they'd been honest from the start and said it was going to be just a toy, and hadn't made promises about accuracy and lenticular material, and fixing the errors, I don't think people would be so harsh about this.

The info has been posted at Matty Forum :)
Let's see how fast it gets deleted.

Since it's late at night, it may make it a fair few hours.

I honestly tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but he came out and focused on a non sequiturial comment I made and instantly lost any good will I had for him.

Is this what brand managers do now? Just tell people they're wrong and it doesn't matter so long as they all sell out? Seems like a pretty crappy job.

Long time lurker but this whole debacle has forced me out of silence.

I too am outraged by Mattel's incompetence over all of this. They just continue to make themselves look like bigger and bigger fools.

Scott Neitlich is a lying crook. He is desperately trying to save his own ass. I'm sure heads will roll at Mattel after the fallout from this settles starting with his since he put himself out there publicly to market this lemon and we all know how Corporate America works when a company does not want to admit liability they put the blame on a fall guy and right now Scott has a big red target painted on himself.

I encourage those of you who feel deceived by this to file complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Companies must be held accountable for fraudulent business practices.

Is there a way to post photos on Matty Forum? I couldn't find a way. I would love to post images.

Upload them to somewhere like Photobucket, Imageshack, Flickr, etc, then just use tags like you would here.

So, let's say the image is at http://www.genericimagesite.com/anyuser/awesomealbum/image.jpg, you would just post the following:

[img]http://www.genericimagesite.com/anyuser/awesomealbum/image.jpg[ / img]

...just remove the spaces on either side of the "/," I had to do that so the board here wouldn't try to post an image instead of the code.
