MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

My order has been cancelled but Digital Rivers said since there has been no sale yet, they cannot release my payment. So Matty is still holding onto my funds while saying they have cancelled my order.

The incompetence is just glaring. I will contact my credit card company tomorrow with the e-mail and see what they can do next.

For every day they hold all these payments, the more interest they draw in their account. They will stretch it out as long as possible. Also, people change their mind. They might hope that some of these people will just decide to take it after all.

Just received two emails confirming my order is cancelled. Had no issues with my credit card still holding an authorization or funds.

Hello All,
I have been reading your post everyday and mostly feel the way you do. I can not understand why Mattel would change the way the parts on the back of the Board (Brackets, and Power Box) look. The rest could be fixed by us to make it much closer to the screen stunt prop. By adding green velcro, adding pink fur to the thin foot strap, maybe paint the post hole black and a custom power box on the back side. The one they went with is so bad and was even changed from the first boards they showed ?
I have one per-ordered and will keep it. I only feel this way due to not knowing if Mattel will ever try this again. Even being not screen accurate in so many ways, it will be a solid board with custom packing, and if you preordered, you get the mini board w/handlebars. Even if you don't want the full size board, you can keep the mini and sell off the reg board for the same money you have in it. NOTE: Funny , if you look at the mini HB handlebars, they even messed them up. The bars have a point at the top of the two bends above the Mattel logos and even made the circle Mattel logos straight and not at a 45.
I think it will come with the clear display stand, but just a guess.

On another note:
I have the Icons Pink Lenticular I bought maybe 8 years ago from a seller that had it left over from the few boards that were made at Icons. It was a small amount for me to do 1 full board and extra top graphics sheet. Have some more scrap that I've been holding on to and sending to people like Summers plastics to get it in the right color. Seems NO ONE IN THE USA can get it, as it is all made in China like everything is anymore. Summers will not even help me get it threw them from China. Until someone can find the right Lenticular in the right color, we will have to keep waiting to get the Hero style dream board. The details on the Lenticular is called 3D POLYCARBONATE CELLULOSE HONEYCOMB LENTICULAR metallized /COLOR- FLUORESCENT PINK *(FLOATING) CELLS *NOT SINKING. (This means when you look at the plastic, it looks to be a inch tall. hero board. Sinking is it looks to be a inch deep into the surface.)
The BTTF HoverBoard has always been something I wanted the very best of, to place it in a acrylic display case and keep until I am a old man. I grew up in the late 80's and early 90's and the HB has always been one of those things that stood out to me.
Sorry for all the writing , but wanted to say. :confused

It seems a handful of people have canceled, but there hasn't been a flood of cancellations.

Hopefully people will end up being impressed with this thing, and hey tommorow, its three years to go, to the real thing! :lol

Hey BTTF123,

Grant here. :) In my personal opinion, I think Icon's got the lenticular wrong. I am 99% certain it was regular pink (not fluorescent) on the real prop. I was able to look at one of Desi's original boards many years ago up close (I regret not taking a photo). The pink was more of a "dull" pink, not as bright/fluorescent as the icon's run. It even appears that way in the movie and prop photos.

You had once sent me pictures of the hero-board you made with the icons material. Did you take any pictures without the camera flash? I would love to use those pictures as a comparison as well.

Rowlux is in the process of quoting me for a custom color run. Although, I would expect it to be over $10,000 for over 10,000 square foot (their minimum order). Anyone down to split that cost? :eek

Let me know your thoughts,

Grant

Hi Grant,
You may be right about the color, but a few things about that:
One, I have read many times about the true color of the Lenticular getting dull over the years on the movie Boards. So that may be why some think the color was more of a dull/flat pink from some of the brightness dulling.
And in pictures, the light in which they were taken in can change the look of the Board so much. Also, I have a letter from Icons ,it states that they were giving access to a lot of the Movie props and information in Hollywood to create some of the most screen accurate props out there. They went the extra mile to get it right and had the inside that others did not. One other thing is the idea of the Mattel HB was to be a little girls toy, and if you have seen Mattels Barbie related toys like Bikes, Power wheels ect, the Pink is Neon Pink, with lime greens, bright yellows, and so on. Last, if I am wrong about all of this, to me the fluorescent pink Lenticluar looks so sick in person, that you will not want the flat dull looking pinks.

This is just the way I took the information and pictures I found over the years,( but you could be 110% correct . )

The Lenticular I had years ago, I got from Summers Plastics and paid around $780. for 50 Yards x 24" wide .(It was a stock item) It was a purple/pink color, but when they sold it to me, they said it was a Neon Hot Pink. When I got it, not so much !! However, it was the closest I could find without doing clear.
Anyway, I can send you a sample of the Icons if you want, let me know.
Thanks!

I'm keeping my order. I want to play with this thing. I already have a BTTF123 board.

Me too, lets see what it's made of right! Plus you get the mini board in the pre-order. If you fix the foot strap and add some velcro, it will look ok from the top. Just saying !

Hey BTTF123,

I've thought about this too. On the other side of the coin, it may have been a mistake Icons could have easily made (because the board surface was painted fluorescent pink).

It could have certainly faded a bit over time, but I think that some of the prop boards look exactly the same as they did when they were in the movie. The screenshot below shows the lenticular, and it doesn't look like fluorescent pink to my eye (note: you can also compare to the edges of the board which is actually fluorescent pink)...

My reasoning behind why the film chose to use a standard/light pink instead of fluorescent pink for the hologram is so that the board color, background lenticular, fluorescent vinyl, and fluorescent velcro didn't "blend" together in a blob of similar colors. Using a lighter pink (which still gives the "barbie" feel) it separates the colors.

I know you like the fluorescent icons honeycombs (and they may look sick!) but I feel like if we get a run of standard/light pink it will match the screen used board (check out link below) and still look sick! What do ya think?

I may be waaaaaaayyyyy over analyzing this stuff! Haha...

Excellent research, Clock88. Indisputable, it's definitely not fluorescent pink lenticular...

BTW, check out those screws holding the magnets. :O

It definitely looks light purple/lavendar on film. Here's another shot of a lenticular board. Compare the light purple lenticular background with the hot pink diagonal stripes and board edges:

That said, many of the remaining lenticular boards have a lenticular background that looks almost RED, not light purple OR light or hot pink:

topmdu.jpg

I prefer the light purple/lavendar lenticular color, because:

1) I like the color on my board to match what I see on screen.
2) It's the color that the fake lenticular backgound on the photoboards was, and it would make sense that they would have tried to match the color of the photoboard backgrounds to the true lenticular color.

My second choice for a lenticular background color would be "Barbie Pink", a lighter/duller shade of pink than the fluorescent/hot pink color that appears on the board edges and the diagonal stripes.

Whether you choose light pink or light purple, or some color in-between, I think there needs to be a contrast between the lenticular background and the fluorescent/hot pink board edges and diagonal stripes for it to look right.

Also note that on the "money shot" hero lenticular board, the self-drying jacket lenticular board, and the surviving lenticular board photographed by sole collector, the top graphics go almost all the way to the board edges. The top edges of the board have virtually no discernible top edge bevel as the photoboards do; instead they seem to have a sharply radiused curved edge.

I would be interested in finding even one shot of a lenticular board that had the beveled top edge with the graphics that stop about a half-inch from each side as with the photoboards...

It would seem that with at least SEVERAL examples existing of lenticular boards with rounded/non-beveled top edges, we can at least cut Mattel some slack on this one point, since their boards are SUPPOSED to mimic the look of the hero lenticular boards.

Wow, you put this into words perfectly! I always wondered why some people like pink lenticular material on their boards. The money shot has a purple lenticular background, and the photo boards also have a purple background. It does provide for great contrast.

Very interesting points. I think I've been the biggest complainer in this thread of the top edge not being beveled on the official Mattel board, so reading this does give me some comfort. I still think most boards that you see in the movie however, have the top and bottom beveled. And like you said above, I like my props to match what I remember on screen.

Sphunter2k,

The reddish picture from sole collector is the modified skateboard prop (it had wheels attached to it). The video below shows the exact same board and it looks completely different! The sole collector picture looks red, while the video below makes it look pink:

Back To The Future Screen Used Hoverboard Movie Prop - YouTube

From my research, a simple change in lighting conditions/position/camera white balance can change the material from:

Magenta - > Salmon Orange

For example; When they were shooting the movie using "daylight balanced" film, if they are in the shade it's going to make it look more blue/purple/lavender than it is in reality. Hence, it looks lavender in that screenshot you posted; but if you look again notice how the tail of the board in the sunlight looks pink? Back then before they had digital intermediate, color correcting was all done photo-chemically (so there were a lot of inaccuracies).

I think this photo best represents the actual color of the material because it was taken 100% correctly (perfect exposure, perfect white balance to tungsten lighting, soft even lighting):
