MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

To compare color...

I would not judge the colour until you see one in the flesh. Some compact and mobile phones are shocking at colour rendition plus the lighting wont help matters.

The molded pink color of the board will be off. I mentioned this pages ago on this thread. To get the correct color they would've had to spray the board which was cost prohibitive. If the board pink color is off then the other parts that are pink might also be off to match. Otherwise you'd get a weird clash of pink tones.

There y'all go, there is light at the end of the tunnel :):thumbsup

And a note near the board at the nycc specifically also said it is not the final product.

So guys, give them time, and only 'explode' if when the final prototype is presented and it still sucks.

That video was post-SDCC and addressing the heat they got from that board.

I remember you saying this, Dave. The failed at the absolute bare minimum level.

"Oh ****, we have to PAINT it? Too expensive."

Dave; you work in the industry. Is it really that much more expensive? What if it had been another color entirely?

The biggest thing that makes me sigh about looking at this photo is that you can CLEARLY see, without a doubt, the beveled edge. The rounded edge on the new board bothers the sh#*%&t outta me!!! But yeah, the colors on that screen-used board are gorgeous too. They couldn't have just taken a scan on that stunt board, cleaned it up a little, and printed that? The "bubbles" on the new board just look silly to me.

Given the cheap sticker and the lack of a lenticular material along with the fact they are not showing the bottom, I would say this is a real screw up from what they promised.

I would be up for selling this off to another person that wanted the pre-order or to cancel it all together at this point. Really disappointed with this final result.

Where is the coverage of this? If the reveal was supposed to be at NYCC, why all this red-headed stepchild business? Mattypallooza is over, pictures of the board are sparse AT BEST.

If anyone is there, can they snag any pictures or video to give us a better idea of what we are looking at.

I've yet to see any video that demos the sound, vibration or movement of this thing. WTF!??

You'll laugh but maybe about 30-40 cents. It doesn't sound like a lot but to Mattel that's a whole other toy. I think they tried molding other pinks and the one they chose was the closest.

As others hav mentioned they just flat out screwed this up. The only reason I got involved was because I knew there were BTTF fans that work there that I knew could make a difference. When they were told "we don't want your help", it turned into this.

I'll give you an example. Watch carefully that video where the Mattel guys are examining Bob's boards. There is a quick shot of a sketch that has some angles drawn with measurements. That was for the bevel detail of the board. Accurate detail. What happened next? That engineer was pulled off the project and the new engineer goes "I don't need someone elses numbers".

What messed up this board honestly were egos and then later, ass covering and maybe some bad decision panicing mixed in. After working there for many years I can tell you Mattel could've easily made a very accurate hoverboard.

Are they not allowing people pictures of the bottom of the board at NYCC? It's 3 days in already, at this point, I don't think there will be any photos of the bottom!

A high res pic of one posted earlier, plus a new one from a different angle:

Is there even Velcro on that board? It looks terrible

So much for all the promises and "it's not the final build" statements lol

Yes. All three from NYCC, and the same toy review website. Hopefully that last pic won't be the best pic we'll ever see of the bottom.

Yes, there's velcro on it. Look at the second picture of the three I posted above. When the board is tilted you can make out the texture of the pink velcro on the front pink diagonal stripes. As was already told to us in the mattycollector forum, they chose NOT to use green velcro on the top surface for the green stripe, so the green stripe is just in the stickered graphic.

So...is that strap made out of one of those tissue paper streamers, or what?! :lol

I knew from the SNF ('So Not Final') version that it was thinner than it should be, but I didn't realize how thin it actually is until I saw these higher res pictures. Even if they didn't get the right fur material, they could have at least make it thicker/bulkier.

...And a thought that boggles my mind: Mattel is a toy company. Toy companies make stuffed animals. Couldn't they have just used pink stuffed animal plush (or whatever it's called) as a stand-in for the fur? It's a little more coarse/carpety than fur, but I think it would've looked fairly decent. And some stuffed animals have a fur-like material too.

A quick search at amazon brings me this:
Amazon.com: Disney / Pixar Toy Story 3 Exclusive 15 Inch Deluxe Plush Figure Lots O Lotso Huggin Bear: Toys & Games
and this:
Amazon.com: HARD TO FIND! 2001 Mattel Barbie Perfectly Plush Fashion Talking Puppy (Measures 9 1/2 High x 9 Long x 5 1/2 Wide): Toys & Games

And it looks like the back of the display case is not glass, but the side is. If any pictures of the bottom are to be achieved, it would be looking from the front of the hoverboard, but it looks like the view would be very narrow.

Ah ok, I couldn't tell if it was Velcro or if the board was indented in between the white stripes (where the Velcro belongs)
