Mask Creation Questions

If you get fed up with the air drying it out constantly try and find a hobby lobby they have pretty cheap oil based clay comes in like 2-5-10 lbs i think the 10lb goes for 14. I believe it's called plasteline made by vanaken. I learned the hard way too but hey that's part of the fun, it took me in total 10 months to sculpt it was like month 5 and I came home the whole sculpt fell apart due to heat, but had her back in no time. Good luck have fun

Really? I will look into the oil based clay, got a Hobby Lobby pretty close to me. I have gotten a pretty consistant seal using liquid nail, i need to uploadsome pics, but it is helping me create some natural textures and sealing the sculpture at the same time. I have a test sculpture using the same method, and when my Ulrta cal comes in I will test the combination of clay and liquid nails with a release agent to see how it turns out. However, I will be using a different type of clay if I do another sculpture because having to seal it and watch the conditions in which i sculpt just adds steps, it is cheap however, the clay (from hobby lobby) was like $5 on sale, and a big containiner of liquid nails was $2. Including the foam head and a roll of duck tape, I have been able to create a sculpture for about $15. not bad considering....Lol

Hey gang, got my Mr. incredible body suit in! I have been waiting to make armor based on the measurements of me in the suit, and came across a picture of an armor set I liked...I found it during a Google search a while back, and was wondering if any of you Predator experts out there could tell me more about this armor, which movie it came from or if it's just someone's awesome rendering of a predator costume? I am planning to use it as a model for my own armor pieces! Thanks gang!

I spend at least a couple of months to several months on a sculpt. But you need oil based clay to do it. You can't spend just a few days on a sculpt and be frustrated when yours isn't as good as others. It takes a lot of time and patience.

It's from predator 2 with a couple tweaks. Only thing I can see different from the original is the thigh armor on the sides is a lil different but other than that just a P2.

I have to say that i love that armor concept and I have to agree with Predator23, that is a modified version of a P2. I see a few thing that are not the same as a P2 (I've worked on many P2 suits and statues) Back armor(bottom) is missing, shoulders (one is missing the other one is a mod), chest armor (under the right arm, another mod), and the cod piece (groin) is completely different. To me the tight armor is close to accurate,

Hey so, I was looking at the part of this concept armor, and poking around the forums for armor ideas: this might sound crazy but what do you guys think of like a themed set of Pred armor? Included a few rough sketches of a Viking type armor and a Aztec type...yes no? Maybe so? Opinions?

Ultra cal (y)
Decent (y)
Sounds like a good old brew. Hope to see some good pix's soon.

Hey so, doing a bit of reading on ultra cal pertaining to mixing ratios....38 parts to 100? Any advice on mixing? If I am not super accurate with the mixture will it change the hardening process/properties?

You need to be as accurate as possible. Either you put too little or too much it will affect the length that it takes to harden and so on. Just continue reading the properties of Ultra - Cal I use tiranti plaster ratio's and properties might vary slightly.

Hey thanks! Getting close to the first go and want to get it right the first time...hopefully

You never get anything right first time in this hobby m8 there will all ways be something.. the more builds you do the better you get it all comes down to how far you wanna go with this and commitment

Almost satisfied with my sculpt! Thinking about casting it in plastic first in case I mess up with the latex...

Ratios of plaster is not as critical as it is with such things as resin or silicone. With experience you can mix by eye and feel without scales. The best method is to sprinkle the plaster to the water. Then wait up to two minutes for the water to soak into the plaster. When it has the appearance of a dry river bed it's time to mix, once it's creamy your good to go. A good consistency is 'nachos cheese' this is good for the first few coats. Then as you build the strengthening layers add more plaster. The more plaster the quicker it goes off and the tougher it will be. And don't forget to add at least two layers of scrim. A good trick is to add struts; thin strips of scrim folded over, soak it in plaster and lay them on in cross sections.

I uploaded more pics into a gallery, which maybe I shouldn't have, but there are more there: I'll have more armor and my Mr. Incredible suit conversion pics soon!
