Marvel Thing 2015 build

220 stones down ...many more hundreds to go.
The pics of the boots show the skirts that I will be installing. They are made out of a very stretchy Yoga Mat. This should allow the ankles to be cinched in, which will give it a seamless look even when I walk.

Several have asked me about the " Knee flaps" . These relief cut at the knees are there to allow me walking mobility, without them I would not be able to walk at all. So I'm hollowing out the knee cavity and putting stones on the inside as well as the outside. I believe this will make for a very neat effect and no one should look twice as it will simply look like part of his skin. I tried to include a pic of what my plan is.

Looks great. Is that latex surgical tubing acting as the extension springs? If so, I would worry about its longevity (not from wear but just from the natural deterioration to which all latex is prone). Once buried in the Thing's hands, it would be a b*tch to replace. Silicone tubing might be worth considering for this reason. Otherwise, this looks perfect.

Nice call Ahoudini, I think i will do just that. Once the mechanics are buried its pretty much impossible to get to.

Great find,Hap.I hope it works out for you.
It looks like you'd have to take the gloves off though to actually grab/hold something,as the fingers do not fold in 100%,nor do they have the strength to hold objects.Minor issue though...

Finished the stones for legs, added scarring and chips for effect then first coat of Krylon stone effect. I will do three coats then 2 coats paint. I will need to do all the airbrushing effects before I do the pants. Also started working on the mechanical hand extenders, will post pics of those towards the coming weekend.

The Blue lines you see are just the magic marker residue bleeding through, after 5 coats of stone and paint they will be gone.

Amazing! Really cool!

For the newbies who may be reading this great thread, Sharpie brand marker ink can be particularly troublesome to cover with paint and has an annoying habit of bleeding through even multiple layers of paint. Not so water-based markers, but, of course, they are not as permanent. Choosing the same color as the eventual top coat can make for a lot less work. In this case, multiple coats are necessary to build texture anyway and so it is not an issue.

Lol Peek.
These freakin hands are killing me. I have built and rebuilt over 12 times now. I do have a finished product with pics, but I am worried they are not heavy duty enough to stand up to the rigors of use.
I will post later today.

i'm pulling for you hapslappy! awesome build so far!! i'm interested in making my own hands shortly so very curious about how your hands are going!! cheers!

No worries I just check your progress when I have down time on the grave shift to see how your doing. I really like your progress so it's just my way of encouragement. If I become annoying, just deal with it. HA! You thought, bwahaa ha ha ha. Insert Animal's laugh from the muppets here.

I am thinking about an articulated Right Hand of Doom for my Hellboy costume instead of just using the Sideshow one, so you can add one more to the "how will the hands come out?" curious list!

Well here is my version of a Thing Hand. I was not able to add the great deal of articulation i wanted and maintain the overall mass. I used 1" sched 40 pvc pipe and an aluminum frame. Total weight over 5 pounds. I needed something built heavy enough to moved and rebound all that weight with the E.V.A bricks yet to go. End result is not the prettiest thing in the world, but i believe will be effective with a little more tweaking. I will be skinning the hand this week and post when done. I am only building one hand to completion before i start the next. I don't want to go through this again if I'm not sure it will work. I included a quick vid link as well.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UofROpJq8Gg

Looks great! Could the palm aluminum strap be concave instead of convex?

Very easily Ahoudini. I will have to get the convex look with foam. I need the space inside to rotate and twist my hand . This would only be needed if you were doing a hand of this size. Smaller ones would not need as much movement space inside because the pull cables wouldn't be as long.

Hapslappy this is a great build! I feel your pain on the hands man. I am doing Juggernaut and I easily have had to redo those things six times. I'm still only 85% sure they will work. The foam work is looking really good. One question I have is what is your plan to manage the heat inside the suit while wearing it? I haven't thought of anything myself.
