Mandalorian Season 3

I thought this episode was awesome, probably best of the season so far. Lots of momentum and finally brings some of these random story threads together. I really enjoyed the Coruscant scene in this one because it built some tension and highlighted the major issues with the New Republic efficiently...not taking 45 minutes to get to the point. Zeb cameo surprised me — I had to rewind to listen to the dialogue because I wasn't sure it was him at first. Thought he looked great! Also I'm lucky I love Bo-Katan because otherwise I’d be pissed Din became a side character in his own show this season. This Ep really cemented that when the Armorer calls to speak to Bo alone. She’s moved on from Din and found a new favorite haha. The best thing about this episode imo is it finally gives us some meaty things to speculate about over the next week, something this season has been lacking.

Here are some thoughts coming out of Ch 21:

The Armorer
Anyone get major sketchy vibes from The Armorer? I still don't trust even after all this time...something about her feels off. She allows Bo to take her helmet off and still lets her walk The Way?? So why'd Din almost die to redeem himself when he could have walked in both worlds as well? Maybe she manipulated Din so he'd go to Mandalore and confirm it's not cursed? If anyone would step foot there it would be a man desperately seeking redemption. Either way, I hope Din takes issue with this and brings it up next week, because to me it reads as disrespect and serious hypocrisy. I could even see The Armorer going so far as to demanding Bo challenge Din for the dark saber in a duel to the death, proving that she doesn't give a crap about him at all anymore and is willing to sacrifice his life just to anoint a ruler who can lead them back to Mandalore. I've seen some speculation that Armorer could be in league with Gideon, finding a way to "unite" all Mandalorians so they could wipe them all out for good. Idk how exactly that would make sense, but I can't say I'll be shocked if she does turn out to have ulterior motives.

Gideon's Escape
The beskar alloy could have been a plant to frame the Mandalorians, seems like something Gideon would do. But my money is on a group of Imperial Super Commandos freeing him. It makes sense there could be another faction of Mandalorians still loyal to the Empire (Remnant), and would further highlight the fracturing and in-fighting within the Mandalorian people by introducing another group. And personally, I've always been a fan of the Super Commando design and would love to see that translated to live action.

I've heard theories that say the Armorer could be Rook Kast. If that's the case, then she ABSOLUTELY could be setting Bo up for something.

For a quick reminder/intro, she was also a Nite Owl, but when Maul took over Mandalore, Bo left but Rook stayed with him. She also broke Maul out of custody when he was captured. That would explain the horns on her helmet, & could even suggest her as a possible red herring in Gideon's escape.
 
I loved this ep. I think they missed a good story point by not having them capture the Corsair, but there was a lot of great action.

And I really wish Bandai would get back in the Star Wars game and give us a decently scaled Kom'rk and N1 (I wasn't a fan of it in the prequels, but I love Din's hot rod version).
 
Enjoyed this one. I really don't like how the New Republic is being set up as inefficient and ineffectual as the old, but we've already talked about that, and I guess it is what it is.

A bit of a ride with the Armorer and Bo. I think the dialogue could've made things a bit more clear. In the old forge, her "unite" speech made me think she wanted Bo to convert all other Mandalorians to the clan's dogma. But then when they got outside, I got more the impression she was embracing that there were different practices between sects and they all need to accept that about each other, with Bo's "walking both worlds" a demonstration of that. I really hope the latter is what she meant.

Navarro needs one of these.

It would make sense why she does follow the way, I don’t think she could follow Maul without having strict adherence to “the way”.
 
What strikes me most about this season is how Grogu has been relegated mostly to a background character.

I mean, he's not the McGuffin that's being hunted anymore. In this episode, Mando took him along in the cockpit with him as he volunteered to be the decoy for the small pirate ships to shoot at. I get Din being confident in his flying abilities, but that seemed a little reckless.

It's almost as if they initially wrote this season with Grogu being away, and were forced by Disney to write him back in here and there.
 
Hmmmm…how many past Mando episodes have we seen that are nearly identical to this one?? (Mando vs. The AT-ST etc).

Oh well…at least Mando didn’t show up flying one of those dragon-chicken monsters things…like a rancor.

And what’s this?? NEVER remove your helmet…now you MUST remove your helmet…? Baby steps Mandos…baby steps (Grogu-sized baby steps).

I overall enjoyed this episode and so far I think this may be my favorite episode of a season that has thus far been more muted for me compared to the first two seasons.

I'm convinced the pirate ship had to have been inspired by the Eclipse. When crashing, I also noticed it made the same sound Vader's SSD did when it crashed into the DSII. The pirates were still way too on the nose in a PotC way, imo.

I found the Capt Teva stuff interesting and continue to like his character. He seems to be our eyes into the wider world. Zeb's cameo was neat, assuming that was actually him. Tim Meadow's cameo caught be totally off guard. Hadn't heard about that one!

I thought the Armorer's total 180 on the helmet stance was pretty weird but I suppose I'd be okay with that if she's actually up to something. I agree with the sentiment that she may far more of an antagonist that has been immediately obvious thus far. Something does feel off with her.

Not sure what to make of beskar being found on Gideon's shuttle. As mentioned above, seems like Mandalorians might be getting framed but I also like the theory that the Imperial Supercommandos could become canon. That would actually be pretty neat, esp if they had the early McQuarrie concept style gear. I am puzzled that Teva seemed to treat the shuttle as evidence Gideon never went to trial. Wouldn't that be known already? Wouldn't there be record he never appeared in court?
 
Was thinking how Beskar alloy being imbedded in the hull is quite odd. Its strange to think a piece of armor would be lodged in the wall, so I think it might imply it’s from some kind of Beskar weapon. When Din brings The Armorer the spear in TBOBF Ch. 5, she says “it can also pierce Beskar armor. Its very existence puts Mandalorians at risk. Beskar steel is meant for armor, not weapons” (she must have forgotten about the Whistling Birds). Makes me wonder if it’s more evidence to support a Mandalorian faction who are loyal to the Empire, using “dishonorable” methods like Beskar weaponry. This could lead to a far more formidable army for our Mandalorian heroes to have to fight against and seems in-line with Gideon’s tactics — using their own technology against them. After all, this latest episode proved how low the stakes are currently. The cartoon pirates got wiped out like it was nothing, and the Mandalorians suffered 0 casualties aside from maybe a few chips in their paint. Gideon wants to eliminate them all, and what better way to do that than to use Mandalorians themselves?

I think one of the major underlying themes about The Mandalorian is that the title is NOT just referring to Din Djarin.... but rather the characters that came into predominance as Din encountered them and the way The Mandalorian culture and mythos affected them:

1) It started out all about Din and his clan...
2) ...and it brushed by and briefly referred to Cobb Vanth...
3) Then it settled on Boba Fett...
4) ...and soon washed over Bo Katan and her crew...
5) ...only to move to Grogu and his decision to return to Mando...
6) ...and now to rest and both Din's clan and Bo Katan in a "new" Way
 
First episode this season that I actually thought was good; I might even rewatch it at some point, which used to be a given with this show.
