Mandalorian Season 3

All excellent points. Thank you.

Everyone grab the pitchforks for me bringing it up, but my 'assumption' (... & Yes, I know what it means to ASSUME) was that, based on the legs, R5 would've been equipped with the rockets that R2 had.

If I remember my PT lore correctly, those were standard on astromechs, but at some point between the trilogies, R2's had become damaged & were just never repaired.
Ah. I always thought that Artoo’s rockets were mods that Anakin put in.

Other than Chopper, who I had always assumed (yes, “assumed”) had been tricked out by Hera, did we ever see another astromech take flight like that? I cannot remember.

If the rockets were standard, then R5 makes more sense than IG-11 for “spelunking,” though IG would obviously be the better bodyguard for Grogu.

I think this is Favreau’s writing in a nutshell. He hits all the right beats, all the right milestones, in the story, but he takes lazy logic-straining shortcuts in-between.

It would have cost them zero extra dollars to record five seconds of dialogue to explain why they needed R5 to test the air in lieu of any atmospheric sensors on the ship.
He most likely did this to show that Mando’s hate for droids is over now.

And he’ll probably get over the never take the mask off stuff too.

The ship couldn’t tell them the surface air was safe to breathe?

That certainly wouldn't be standard equipment, it's a fighter not an exploratory vessel. Ant if he needs a droid to scout ahead anyway there would be no need to go to the trouble of installing one on the ship. But there should have been a line about R5 being able to scan down into the depths from the top.

Not sure I would know what’s “standard” on a fighter in this universe, but I guess anything capable of space flight would have some systems and redundancies in place to let you know it’s safe to pop the hatch?

Even if a task like that was usually offloaded to the astromech, Din could have asked R5 for those readings before sending him rolling into the cave.

And you make a good point about there being tech to test the air from the surface. Again, a probe/seeker droid could have handled that quite well, I’m thinking.

Discussing the new season with a friend in chat, I thought this was very on point...

"Carl Weathers is the best friend any character in the Star Wars ever had. Dude fixes up an entire planet so he can build a nice house in a good school district for his weirdo buddy. All he asks in return is that buddy fights the space pirates that the buddy is already prepared to fight. He’s seriously just asking Mando to raise his kid in a stable environment while crusading for space dragons or whatever.

Instead Mando is all “Nah, gotta take the baby spelunking. Anyway, good luck with the Pirate King. I shot up a whole bunch of his dudes on the way out, I’m sure that won’t have repercussions for you. Peace!”"

Mando has a religiously mandated spa day to get to so I guess some innocent townsfolk have to get pirated. Sucks to be uncle owend’ed

He’s also keeping the (ugh) Dark Saber (ugh) from princess Starbuck even though he sucks with it and she can actually lift the damn thing. She’s got both the training and desire to use it as a symbol of leadership, while he’s a weirdo loner

But the quest giver back at the login hub hasn’t offered him exp for handing it over yet so I guess it’s more fetch quests for us!

Let’s talk about duty or whatever, but not take the very easy and necessary steps toward fulfilling it

Give Carl the damn sword. Dude is a real go getter

It seems like everyone forgets that Mando wanted to give it up and she wouldn’t take it. He’s not keeping it from her, here’s a refresher.

Ah. I always thought that Artoo’s rockets were mods that Anakin put in.
He uses them in Phantom Menace in a previously deleted scene that, I don't remember, was it just an extra on the DVD, or did they incorporate it back in? Don't know if it's canon.

I think some of you are missing the most important part of the story.Din might fly all over hell for a droid part, the chick might be a parts scalper working with Jawa’s,Bo is sitting on her throne mopping and Mando helmets are limited in what they can do but all of this works and I will tell you why. This is the way!

It seems silly to me if it’s canon that all astromechs come standard with rocket boosters. If that’s the case, it’s weird we don’t see astromechs just zipping around, to and fro, instead relying almost entirely on their precarious tripod locomotion. They certainly shouldn’t need an apparatus to get into their starfighters like we see in the OT.

And I def think Carl Weathers has been criminally underutilized lol

I actually have always thought, since the PT anyways, that the rocket boosters would be necessary for getting in & out of fighters if they landed on a planet without the loading apparatus we see in ANH & ROGUE ONE.

We never saw it in the OT because R2 was with Luke when he'd need to be in or out of an X-Wing & Luke could use the Force. In my head anyways.

Eh, maybe. It’s a much simpler explanation that R2’s boosters were a mod, rather the Rebellion was full of malfunctioning rocket boosters lol
Let’s take this 100% over the cliff, and note that Artoo had the boosters in AOTC, but Anakin had just reconnected with Padmé (and Artoo) after 10 years. Did he have any time to modify Artoo to add boosters before that plot started rolling?

I suppose he could have had the time when they were hiding out in the villa on Naboo…..

I'm hoping Din Djarin gonna take a trip to Cloud City and find the White IG droid in junk piles in that room that Chewbacca finds C3po in. Maybe even Boba Fett can help him out about it.. "oh yeah, i shot a IG droid in Cloud City a few years back when i worked for the Empire, it just might still be there with its memory core.."

R2 was first seen on the queens Naboo cruiser, He does go out in space and save the ship from being destroyed, I'm guessing his boosters are so that he can fly around in space IF something happens to the ship(not only rolling around on the hull as he does in TPM) So some R2 units that work on ships has them but not everyone. He needs them for his work on the ship, and other R2 droids that don't work on ships does not have them.

Lol good point! Unless it was done by someone other than Anakin

So, I went back to try & find the 'official' word on the matter, cause I remember reading about it...

Brooks Property Propulsion were the manufacturer of the booster/thruster rockets installed on all R-series Astromechs. They allowed short flights of varying heights & distances. After the Clone Wars, Brooks Propulsion were driven to bankrupty by the Galactic Empire, so as the droids either went out of warranty or just had malfunctioning rockets, there were no existing services to have them repaired.

Well, I guess...This is the way.

Do you have a online or book reference to this? Wookipedia?

Part was Wikipedia, part was either the Visual Dictionary from AOTC, or the website BTS info after an episode of TCW. I don't remember which, but I'm leaning towards TCW info because R2 used them more during that show.
