"MagnaTRON" Home Theater Room With Movie Props

Added TRON Identity Disc to the TRON: Legacy Poster Display (and removed light cycle from box to fit both on speaker/stand).

Full Size Staff of Ra added to back of the home theater room next to the Raiders poster display. I also added a mini-Moet Chandon bottle to the bookshelf display (champagne they were drinking in Temple of Doom) as I had some room when I removed the MK Medallion to put on the staff.

Another "Marion" (from Raiders of the Lost Ark where she lights a cigarette as Toht comes into the Ravenwood Bar) IMCO lighter has arrived (all the way from Morocco), a 1930s/40s model with the original TM REG cap on it. I thought it was a bit beat up, but it turned out to just need cleaned up a bit. A new flint and it's ready to light those Sweet Afton cancer sticks.... (I'm crazy so there's another "TM REG" end cap IMCO on its way still too (thought it would be cleaner than this one, but this one didn't turn out too bad, after all). I got them all for $15-20 each.

Added Libbey Gibraltar 12oz Stackable Tumbler glass (Belloq/Marion glasses used in the tent scene where she tries to drink Belloq under the table).

I'm still waiting on the matching bottle/label replica from the tent scene (coming from Italy), which will go by the matching glass and Belloq's pocket watch eventually. I'm also waiting on the Portuguese Gold Reis coins and pouch from the Temple of Doom.

The name is Bond, James Bond. Ian Fleming has said Bond carries an oxidized Ronson lighter (contrary to the movies that seemed to think a proper British brand, namely Dunhill, should be used). The Whirlwind model makes the most sense for Bond as it has a built-in gadget, a slide-up wind shield so he can light up in those Siberian winds. I picked up this rather plain 1940s-60s Ronson Whirlwind with the conspicuous letters JB on it. James Brown? ;)

In any case, I got to spend hours restoring it to working order (tear it apart to remove jammed flint...still wouldn't strike. Didn't quite get all the flint out. Then I wondered where I set that first flint (it was still in the lighter when I added a second one (face palm).... Then the fill cap was jammed TIGHT. I sprayed it with WD40, put it in the freezer to get the metal to contract and and dug a deeper groove into the screw before it finally broke free. I think the striker wheel isn't quite up to snuff (doesn't spark consistently every time) and the flint tube is getting the start of a crack near the top. For a lighter with so little corrosion on the body, this was the WORST to get working again (twentycase, ten-a-case, Fuzi imitation twentycase, IMCO trench, Dunhill trench, they were ALL easier than this one to get working.

I guess Connery said it best in From Russia With Love when a guy asked him for a match and he said, "I use a lighter," and the guy replied, "Better yet!" and the Connery retorted, "Until they go wrong." You and I both know it, Sean. In any case, Brown, JAMES BROWN is ready to light some cancer sticks or some fuses, whichever is needed. ;)

I'm putting this one next to my Spectre ring.

I found a friend for the Bond lighter. It's a Dunhill Service Lighter (Trench lighter somewhat similar to the IMCO Trench lighter, but the wind shield is not adjustable and you can't take the body out to use as a lamp (i.e. the Austrian IMCO is a better design, IMO). The guy that sold me this one couldn't get it to work, but the body looked to be in good shape and I got it for cheap for a Dunhill ($15) as even the trench lighters with the paint peeling on them usually go for over $25 and one like this is typically $75+. I took the wadding out and trimmed the wick (it wouldn't budge it and just pulled apart it hadn't been used in so long) and cleaned the body and inside up a bit and the spark wheel up and put a new flint in and loaded it up with Ronsonol and Presto! It works almost like new again (took a few turns to get the flint shaped to fit the wheel right and it starts almost every time now).

Edit: I watched the opening to Tales of the Gold Monkey again and I'm now certain that is a Dunhill service lighter at the end where Jake lights Louie's cigarette for him. The IMCO Super 6700 "trench" lighter (which is used by Marion in Raiders of the Lost Ark) and the Dunhill service lighters look similar on top with the pop top that comes out, but the IMCO hides the spark wheel inside and the pop top can only come back to 90 degrees while the Dunhill has the flint spring chamber and spark wheel right on the back there as shown in the picture below and the pop top flops open well past 90 degrees. In the Tales of the Gold Monkey sequence, you can plainly see the top hanging past 90 degrees (impossible on the IMCO) and Jake's hand is holding on just below the round spark wheel so it's clearly a Dunhill or Parker service lighter (unless there's some other lighter like that I'm unaware of that it could possibly be as well). In any case, I have both now so I'm covered regardless. ;)

I also loaded one of my IMCOs up with fluid and it fired right up too (flame height adjusts with the moveable windshield and it pulls out a lamp and works well like that just as they say). I've now tried all the lighters out except the case ones and the Indiana Jones ZIPPO (they're ready to go; they just need fluid). Even if they're just going to sit on the shelf as a movie prop, I like to know they're truly functional with a flint and some fluid. ;) )

I've rearranged a few things and added a Touch Tip lighter similar to the one in Ms. Wonderly's apartment in the Maltese Falcon (not the clock one from Sam Spade's desk) to the display for now next to Bogart's gold stamp regalia. I've added one of my extra Imco lighters to the half bath display with the Bond and Tales of the Gold Monkey lighter and moved the Belle of Lincoln whiskey bottle next to the Maltese Falcon as there's a bottle in the movie (label facing the other way) of similar design so it makes more sense to share the space with a bottle that could have been in both movies. I put Johnny Walker in the corner next to the shot glasses (looks better there IMO) and Jack next to Belloq's glass for now (his tent bottle family label is on the way).

Updated Poster Display to show Belloq's "Eau da Vie" family label bottle (fig brandy it seems). I've arranged it with Indy items on the left and Belloq on the right and both had access to the Ark in the middle (scale version of course).

My Dunhill Unique wick lighter (1924+) has arrived. I got a pretty good deal on it (no one else bid) given how much they typically go for. It was pretty dirty and had brown (tobacco?) stains and needed a new flint, but now looks pretty good, in my opinion and it's working fine. I believe this lighter was used in several movies including From Russia With Love (movie version that is; the book version used a Ronson) and more recently I noticed one in The Amazing Doctor Clitterhouse with Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart. I'm sure I'll find more as I watch older movies some more.

This is my shelf display in the half bath off the main home theater. There's a Dunhill Service lighter on the left in the back row and an IMCO Super 6700 on the right back row. The Dunhill Unique is on the right in the front row and the Ronson Whirlwind on the left, both in front of the ring from the Bond film Spectre.

I decided to get photos of all my recently acquired lighters lit up (wick lighters evaporate the fuel when not used so at least I can see a picture of them lit before putting them back on display). This shows them all working (I had to fix several of them with stuck flints or wick issues and/or clean them up and most needed a new flint at the very least).

These three have the same pattern made within 3 years of each other to match the one in Bullets or Ballots, which is actually the Twentycase version)

Ronson Whirlwind Lighter (2 of them). One as an etched pattern; the other is a more plain "oxidized" one to match the Ian Fleming James Bond lighter described within as a plain oxidized Ronson. This one has "JB" etched on one side as well.

Added a "WIN" brand electro-quartz lighter that looks the same on the top/side (the only parts you can see in the movie) of Rachel's lighter in Blade Runner. There's another lighter by Colibri that also has the same top/vent design and is also a 1980s electro-quartz. It's probably one of the two. The latter is hard to locate, apparently. I just happened to find this WIN lighter (only one I've seen like this so far) for a great price in MINT condition. Even if it's not the same lighter (probably never know for sure), it's a darn cool lighter as it lights with an electric spark from a quartz crystal (same piezo electric ignition on hot water heaters and similar devices) and has gas adjustment to go from a small traditional size cigarette flame to a jet blue 6-inch flame you could light a pipe with (or other object that you don't want to get quite so close to).

Based on some closeups and the distance to the first vent on the side from a movie snapshot, I get the impression the Colibri is probably the correct lighter (I think it has a slightly shorter distance by the looks of it see below movie left, WIN center and Colibri right). But either way, it's very similar in design.

A fair replica to the Heart of Ahriman is on the way next along with a remote controlled display platform to turn it red as in Conan the Destroyer.

(Right image colored in Photoshop to give an idea of how it would look illuminated red)

The Heart of Ahriman has arrived! Here it is on display with white and red light platform modes (far and distant) in the actual room under the sword display....

I could use the decorative surround of the platform from the movie to match it even closer....

RONSON Jetlite "jet lighter" (butane torch in the blue/hotter flame region) added to my (mostly Vintage) Lighter Collection (not sure of any movies it might be offhand, but it's a cool lighter and this one has a nice retro Art Deco design on it).

The "Eye of the Serpent" (Waterford Amethyst Crystal) from Conan The Barbarian has arrived. I haven't picked its final place and light, but here's a picture using the same light platform as the Heart of Ahriman above lit RED like in the movie scene where Conan takes it from the holder. I believe the one in the movie modified the crystal, however (polished down the flowers and added some optic fibers to light it from within). I'm not going to add optic fibers, but it could be polished down to have nearly smooth edges. I think it looks fair as-is with a light through it, though.

Another lighter addition:

This one is or is at least visually similar to a Dunhill Unique Sport in silver/chrome, but it has no markings on the bottom which made it suspicious, but I got it for under $40 so I figured what the heck). It was a PITA to get working (flint stuck like you wouldn't believe and it's too much a PITA to take apart the spark wheel to push it out from that end so it took some work with a bit). Then, on top of that the flint spring was somehow missing half of it (must have broken at some point). I used the spring from my other Dunhill to test it (which works fine). The silver finish was also peeling and it's chrome underneath (I'm just going to remove it all so it's even; I'm about 2/3 the way there), which also seems off for a Dunhill (normally brass underneath if not solid in silver) and along with the missing markings on the bottom and a slightly different dust cap than my regular non-sport Unique that has all the markings you'd expect on the bottom, I'm thinking it's some other brand or a fake. But not being a Dunhill expert, I can't say for certain as they made it for many years. But it makes a nice display piece regardless and clearly works fine with a spring installed.

Edit: Fully cleaned up now and I found a way to make the short spring work. Working well.
