Magic/Apoxie Sculpt

Hey All,

I have a materials question.

How many of you use Magic/Apoxie sculpt in your costume making? I'm working on a helmet at the moment and I've started using some Magic Sculpt as a part of it. (Hot Glue, PVC Foam, Stryene, as well)

What is your experience with it? Do's and Don'ts? Huge Mistakes with it? Recomendations? How about painting it?

Thanks!

I love the stuff. I have used it on my Vader helmet, replica guns, filling seams on resin busts. I used to do taxidermy and would use it to set the glass eyes in my fish mounts. It sands good and paints up great.

I've used it in the past to make the face mask of TMNT Shredder. Besides it being a little heavy, it sanded just fine and took primer and spray paint with really good results. When fully cured, it is durable comparable to ceramic.

I love using Magic Sculpt. It is like putty, not clay. Therefore it shapes differently. Meaning that it will stick to your fingers and tools, and as a result, once I get the material where I want it, I give it a coat of vaseline for a frictionless surface. I can then smooth with a tool and get it pretty smooth.

Once cured, it can be sanded and polished. It is rock (granite) hard.

I hear it takes about 24 hours to cure. So I'm assuming after 24 hours I can paint it. I have a deadline on a project and it's closer than I would have hoped.

It's been years since I've used it. I liked it. Smelled like tortilla chips. You can mix acrylic paints directly into it. It's messy but it does take colors well.

At the moment I am looking for a material to sculpt a pistol, I'm making ebony and Ivory from DMC devil may cry. now I intially I started the sculpt with air dry clay, would I be able to use this to make the sculpt instead? or would it be better to do a sculpt of air dry and do a coat of this?

I use it for a lot of my detail work, and it's great for sanding after it cures also. I would recommend letting it cure before you paint it, but the best trick I can offer is: after you get your basic shape I use a wet paper towel to get a nice smooth surface to it. I would not use cheap paper towels, but the thicker nice ones (I use the target brand), they will work magic after you get it where you want it and take out all the fingerprints. Just use light pressure ;).
