Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber

Wow dude, i'm impressed!
Yeah I'm sure if you are good at stuff like that (which I'm not) and have a ton of patience (which I don't), then you could definitely get a more accurate paint job than using the stencils. I wish I had the eye, patience, and a steady enough hand to do that. But I tried it before with the boba fett helmet and it turned out horribly. I just figured I'd offer a quick alternative.

So if you can do that, absolutely go for it. But if you want a quick "slap it on and paint it" option, these are pretty easy.
Start to finish in about 45 minutes (most of that is weeding out the stencils)

Man! You totally killed it with these stencils. This is exactly how I wanted my kit to be finished. Looks awesome!!!!

That picture shows everything what I mean. I think I wouldn't be able to top this paint. The smallest slip with the tool and I need to repaint and start from the beginning. No way. So I didn't match all the right dimensions of the black spots.

45 minutes? No kidding? I think I have invested always 45 hours and am not fully done with the emitter.

According to Morgan there's an extra ridge on the pommel cubes on the original prop yet it's not apparent on the V2 made by Anakin Starkiller ... he's just curious to know if that can be fixed somehow?

Chaim

There MIGHT be a tiny bit more pronounced ridge there than there is on the replica, but if so it is very negligible. A small amount of thinned down paint applied to that ridge to darken it (thin enough for the paint to run down the groove) and it looks nearly identical.

The one thing I've always wondered about is the thickness of the "grenade" rings. These seem to be noticeably different in that the replica's rings are all significantly thicker.

Indeed morgan63 you are correct and so is Trooper_trent ... but as always with runs like this ... it's mostly manual labour, even with a machine shop and small errors might occur during the process ... just remember guys that even George Lucas could not keep his lightsabers apart nor did he care a lot about continuity when it came to filming the lightsaber props in the hands of the actors ... all you'd see would be the flashing of the beams mostly and sometimes out of the butt-end if that would give a better shot on screen :lol So guys, just enjoy that V2 saber for which Anakin Starkiller even had to suffer in the end, to get this V2 as close as he could with the minimum of photographic details available to him, ... if only he'd had a real working V2 lightsaber at his disposal ... then those thugs would be running with an arm or leg less on their body :wacko

If Anakin Starkiller takes out a leg with a saber wouldn't the thug run in a small circle???

Making a copy of something with grainy, imperfect photo reference, is an insanely complicated project to take on... You could grab all reference from all angles and find problems I'm sure. Without having the actual prop right in front while making the plans, there are going to be things that are slightly off.

But when I'm holding this saber, I'm not staring at a bunch of reference in front of me... I know the need for accuracy, but I feel if you need to get in real close, put photo against photo, blow up in photoshop to get your point across, then it's a pretty good replica as far as I'm concerned!

Reminds me of my old job...I spent 10 years as an assistant animator for Dreamworks feature... taking rough drawings and using reference to put it "on model"... 2 different guys could tear a single drawing apart that for all intents looks exactly like the character... "the eye is a hair to low..." "no the eye is fine, the eyebrow is a hair to high".... "no the eye and brow is fine... it's the hat is just a hair to low"...

It would drive you friggin nuts. director and supervisor holding 6 pages of reference arguing if something is right or wrong...

I'll work the pommel to me if thee the only person interested let me know !!!!! I am not criticizing are working I just findings and for me that's what shocks me details thank you to all and may the force be with you

Yeah, please believe me that was NOT a gripe in the LEAST! This is now my favorite part of my collection and I've spent more time on getting it right than any other (as is evident by making the stencils to try and replicate the paint scratches). I am super impressed with all of Dan's work and could never in a million years do any better. It's just fun for me to play "spot the differences" when they get this close so that maybe future attempts can get even closer. That's what we're all after anyway, isn't it?

Repainted my Russrep V2 as an ANH Obi Stunt/V2 :lol

It's obviously not 100% accurate (the Russrep V2 is inaccurate for starters)

I decided to go all black with the paint as I'm not convinced the stunt that became the V2 ever had the brown/bronze neck

I know at least one of the stunts had the transistors so I included them, could do with a better wire & red button

but it'll fill the ANH stunt gap in my collection for now & I quite like it
