Lighted 1/24 BSG Raptor HELMETS?

I remember ...somewhere...some crazy dudes discusssing ways to light up the pilots helmets on the BSG 1/24 raptor but because of the several alien abductions, High School, marriage and two children....I have no idea what modeling site I saw it.

I have placed searches at HobbyTalk, Here and StarShip Modeler with no results.

Help?

If one were to go that far ( what...who me? :angel) I figure the best and easiest way would be surface mount led's.

ooops I gave away my next project.

Why yes I did lol. It's fairly easy on the Viper pilots, I jut hollowed out the backside of the head and drilled a vertical hole through the back. After it was all in I just sculpted a new back for the head. The wire exited out the backside of the seat.

I just painted it up like normal and then ran a #11 blade around the face to expose the light.

I'm doing the same thing with the Raptor figures but the rear figure took some doing as he sits on a stool rather then flight seat.

Very well done! Thank you. I really like how you did that.

I can not wait to get my kit and start.

No problem. I also had to route out a huge area of the floor of the Raptor for all the wires and circuit to mount. I found a great replacement for the double diamond plate floor through Plastruct item number PS-151. That is if you have to do the same thing.

So that was your work.

Question please. Are the screens in the kit backlit panels or regular decals?

I'm pretty sure that it was your kit....unless there is one or two other persons who dremeled out the floor for a circuit board?

What about those screens...Decals or Backlit?..huh huh :$

Oregon!?....You will need to make a trip up here on the 13th of October for our annual Sci-Fi / Fantasy model contest. You can meet Coby, Chris Doll, Charles Adams and a few other talanted guys and I know that you have some cool work you can enter.

I did the other one - combo of LEDs and EL sheet. In fact, I have Helo pointing to where I signed my name, LOL!

LOL I spoke with Charles about getting up there for that. I'd love to if the schedule is clear for me by then. It's only about a 4hr drive from me so we'll see.

Jason that build ROCKS sir!!!

I've set up a mold to cast the heads/helmets in the same translucent resin as the other clear parts, once i get caught up with the current orders i can run a few off for anyone who is interested in one. Not sure if it will make lighting any easier, but my thought was that you could stick a LED in the helmet, paint the head, then scrape away the part you want to shine thru.

I missed most of this thread Max....
Mind if I ask what may be a stupid question?

Did you start with clear cast pilot heads? Or are they the standard opaque resin figures?

If they are the non-clear resin..... how does the light transmit thru the helmet?

Sent my payment in today! man I can't wait! :)

Mr. Holms....In this case ..I'm sure that Mike means to cast some helmets ( which are seperate parts ) and some heads in CLEAR resin like how some of the kits walls and cockpit parts are casted...and not in the standard resin.

I believe that this process would make it easier to light up the interior of the helmets.

The Viper pilot was cast in white resin so it actually acted like a diffuser for the LED but still showed through blue. After the figure was painted up I just removed a thin line of the paint around the face with a #11 blade.

The Raptor figures are tan resin so I had to make a thin slice around the face into the hollowed out head so it wouldn't discolor the LED.
