Since this is mostly a materials discussion ill keep this short

I found a material i hand dyed it i tried 10 different things before spray lacquering it for close enough finish.

:)

that looks great where did you find all of this?

Thank you so much!! I was fortunate enough to see the costume in person and take a ton of photos. Ive been sewing for many years now and live in Southern California. Texture and look was most important so I headed into the fabric District. I managed to find all the materials in less than 2 hours. However the basket weave I found i bought all of it (15 yards) I used 11 and am now crossing my fingers that the Sith Lords at the 501st don't want any changes to the actual structure or I am going to have issues!
The entire thing was hand dyed by me, I used boxes upon boxes upon boxes of dye and then coated it all in spray lacquer. That gave it a "slight" shine. I've tried 10 different things on my materials to try and get it to shine. My friend knows that the plastic is added after the pieces are cut. This is also obvious because there is no shine at all on any of the fray.

Thus far Ive tried

Shiny Acrylic Paint
Fabric Fusion (looks amazing but made the entire thing stiff as a board)
Plexi-Dip
Hard Wax
Spray Gloss
Canvas coating
Super shine armor all
Shine Gloss Paint on
Fabric Dye
Shine Fabric Dye

and i am sure there are one or two more that I am forgetting x.x

The gloves I hand made myself. I bought a pair of leather gloves and I unseamed them and went to town restitching the designs then i just reseamed the gloves

the boots are just basic. I added three lines of leather

The belt I hand made and i hand cut the front design out of Cintra same with the belt buckle :)

Oh awesome Im in social to. I looked at every store here and have all over online and zero luck. I was hoping to be started by now.

20150509_194447.jpgI found what the pant look like in vanity fair.

Oh wow now I'm confused haha there is so much to this. I need to start gathering material I'm looking for myself and a couple local 501st guys.

Us (the Sith Lords) have a huge discussion on the Sith Lord forum.

If you have an account there you can check out our findings here.

I also have a full tutorial and WIP here if anyone is interested! :) over 200 images its quite image heavy

the best example i can find of what that second layer truly looks like is this photo
Star-Wars-The-Force-Awakens-toys.jpg

So i attached my (cotton) sleeves to my (wool) Midcoat ( feel like a shirt layer is adding more than needed and we dont know what it looks like anyways

then you put the (Basketweave) surcoat on over the top (the surcoat and cape are attached to each other on mine)

Bam throw that belt on and baby you got a Kylo

Btw i am sorry OP for derailing your post.

thank you thank you and no worries I just haven't been able to get a decent look at the other parts since it was so dang dark in that exhibit.

Oh no not at all please continue !!

If you can get a screen accurate material at this price, I"m sure you'll get lots of takers. Especially now. You've seen how much hype is generated for your other pieces, those people need cloth as well!

just awaiting the feedback and sample from the mill will be a couple weeks

Paging MasterEdi! MasterEdi, report to the page, please!

Can someone post a picture of the color of the overcoat in natural, direct lighting? Any fabric, or whatever.... I just want to get a good idea of what the color was. I know there are the pictures of the suit prior to them turning the red lighting on, but even those pictures look like they are in dim lighting. I want to know from someone who saw it firsthand, what the color was. I want to know what it would look like in natural, direct lighting.

I know Edi said it was more of a dark grey than it was a black, so if someone could find a comparable color in MSpaint, on google, or, ideally, a fabric swatch (of any fabric) that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not to pee in your wheaties, but the color is quite an enigma. Some guys who worked the exhibition area in SWCA as crew said that Michael Kaplan the costume designer for Kylo told them that the costume (not sure what part, I assumed the overcoat) was actually really really dark brown that appears black on screen... :wacko I don't think anyone here has seen this in natural sunlight, some people may have seen the case before lights were turned on but like you said the lighting was dim.

not at all more info is great !!

even if it is a very dark brown i think black is a good guide so far from the vanity fair shoot which was i'd guess pretty well white balanced hahaha

also i totally get the dark brown as with the lights on you can see a very very very very slight undertone of chocolates

thanks for the extra insight

once we get the sample we can go from there :)

And it was good to hear that name Michael Kaplan, now we know atleast who to chase after, apparently he's UK based so some of you guys over there, become his linkedin friend, FB or whatever and offer him a pint or tea to get more info!! :lol

Black dyes will usually be tinted towards either red (brown) or blue. I'd assume that they chose whatever tint they did to get a certain look under studio lighting.

I think the correct weave is 2/2 from the high rea shots bot 3/2

would be nice to see a sample of this though

Could be. It still looks identical to the weave from the picture on the first page where you can see the glove. Sadly, this is the last that site has and they only sell samples of fabric you can order by the yard. I will see if I can find it somewhere else to get a sample.
