Kylo Ren Fabric

Re: Kylo Ren Fabric - Gloves

Little off topic: Gloves.
I've spent hours of searching, I think the gloves are custom made like the fabric.
The closest I have found were these gloves on ebay for $16USD "Men's dark black smart touch leather gloves". (found them on Amazon too)
They will need the additional finger lines and knuckle guards added, but the bands across the back of the hand look very close in person.
So sharing instead of lurking in the forums like I usually do.

Great find I'm buying 2 plain pairs of leather gloves to mashup into one kylo pair i'll start a new thread when i begin !

On the list of things I never thought I'd do in my shower.

  • One 115 Liter (about 30 gallon) trash bin, with a tap plugged into the bottom and a wood board to protect from the heating element
  • 27 (count 'em) packs of dye
  • 2 liters of vinegar (for the wood threads)
  • 1 pack of salt (for the cotton threads)

Heated to a balmy 80c (about 176 Fahrenheit) and kept that way for almost two hours before rinsing, which also took a couple hours. (7.5 yards of thick wool weighs a gorram TON when soaking wet.) It's now drip-drying on my balcony. Early indications are promising. I got it to a mix of very dark grey and black alternative threads with just a hint of brown tone. Once I've cut my pattern I'm going to roll-coat the panels with a 50/50 mix of black and clear gloss fabric paint to give it the waxed look.

I have to be honest; this was one of the scariest things I've done in all my years of prop and costume making. Even though I was pretty careful and calculating, my nightmare scenario was that the trash bin could've had a defect and not take the pressure of all that water, so I kept watch the entire time, making sure nothing went wrong. For anyone else considering dying this much fabric without access to a back yard or basement... BE CAREFUL.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and in general. However, I'm trying to go as Kylo Ren for New York Comic Con. One quick question, does anyone know of a person who could make a replica of Kylo Ren's mask? Also, how would one go about, ordering the fabric that the Mill is working on?

Sorry everyone, I'm a newbie to this board and process.

Last year I went as a movie accurate version of Predator (that some really awesome costume designers put together) but this is a totally different thing for.

Any tips?

Also, would anyone have an idea as to how to create the ridge **** under the hood or where to find something like that?

Welcome to the RPF. I suggest using the search feature and spend some time carefully reading through this forum (including the rules) and the 501st forums to find the answers you need. Most of the info you seek is readily available. Not to appear unhelpful, but most people are too busy with their own projects to make one-stop tutorials about these things.

Thank you! Sorry about the noob questions. Didn't think this idea would be as complicated as it appears to be on the surface. It's a bit overwhelming

Thank you Sni9er! I saw your work in the other forums and PM'ed you about it (and services related to the Kylo Ren suit). Trying to get it all together by this October. Your works looks awesome btw!

Okay guys, so I just want to throw my two cents in....

I haven't had a chance to read this whole thread yet, but I'm sure there's a lot of great stuff on it. This may have already been said in this thread, but I figured I should repeat it anyway, even if someone else has already said it....

I have a friend named Chris who happened to do some work at Celebration this year (I believe it was volunteer work, and therefore he got in for free because of it, or something like that... perhaps I'm wrong, and it was just volunteer work and he had to pay to go... I don't know for sure). Anyway, he and I are both in the 501st together so we talk quite a bit. One of the first things when I saw the new Kylo Ren pictures released during Celebration was "Oh my gosh, I want to do that costume" as I'm sure most of you can identify with...
Well, since he worked there, I asked him to take some pictures for me. He got some with his cell phone, but not as great as the ones that I keep seeing on here with the flash on and everything with the professional cameras. Anyways, he let me know something really interesting. I'm not 100% sure if he worked in the costume room or not, but what he did tell me is that he had a chance to talk to Michael Kaplan, one of the costume designers for the movie. What he informed Chris of is that the fabric is a custom weave (like we've all been saying) and that there's only a yard left of it (I'm sure somewhere in one of LFL's or Disney's warehouses now). But, here's where it get's interesting. Something else Michael told Chris is that although the plaque says it's black, the fabric is actually a dark dark DARK brown and dark silver weave.

Now, please don't take that as fact... I have absolutely no idea if that's the case or not... I trust what Chris said, and I trust that Michael Kaplan told him that.... but, I hate to say this, but I don't know 100% if Kaplan knows what he's talking about or is just talking to... well... talk.

If this is the case, that would explain the reflectiveness of the outer robe and why it changes color under different light....
Again... I don't know if that's the case... Kaplan could be misinformed, or even wanted it originally to be brown and silver, but it came out black... but it's food for thought.

this does make sense it's somthing we've discussed in passing somone also spoke with Michael Kaplan on this subject

most dyes for black are either brown based or blue based so this is a good backup info !

also the silver part is interesting i'll wait to see the sample from the mill but i might perhaps speak with them on this

Just my 2 cents. I've heard "silver thread" brought up more than once and I disagree, it's the coating that's making it reflective, not the thread.

Ooh shiny! I'm currently testing different coatings and I think I've finally found one but I want to try a few more different swatches before I come out and show people so I don't mis-direct anyone to buy something incorrectly.

As for the color, just like Sni9er said, black dye tends to have either a blue or brown/red, undertone. I'm personally using dye with a blue undertone because that is the undertone of my sleeve fabric and I'd like to have a concise color throughout my entire costume. I think making sure your blacks aren't clashing is more important! If you want warm undertones, use Rit. If you want cool undertones, use Dylon! :)

Definitely have to agree with you, the coating is what's making it look reflective... but the real question is, do you think there could potentially be some silver in there anyway? I mean, I feel like it's a possibility either way. The brown was what I was confused about, but I now understand what you mean since it's an undertone of a black dye.
