Kylo Ren Fabric

What's it made out of? How much dye did you use and how long did you dye it for? What's the weave? It's dyable you just might raise the price a ton figuring out how much you'll need

I am working with a seamstress who is doing all the heavy lifting, so to speak, so I do not have all the details. I'm doing the research on the look while she is hunting for the right fabrics.
I will see if she can send me the answers to your questions though.

I might be able to help if you can get the material :) my own kylo material gave me a lot of crap. But usually it's a lack of dye. (Or proper dye) you may have a poly weave. On my palpatine for example I dyed it 3 times and used 22 boxes of dye on just the outer robe. :)

hey guys i think i tracked down the correct sleev fabric today

Cotton Duck Canvas

the weave is consistent with the Exhibit and i know duck canvas to wear sin a similar fashion and go a shade lighter under wear (as seen on the edges of the pleats where the shading is slightly lighter

i have four weights on order as a sample 10, 12, 16 and 21 oz

I'll let you know how they feel when they arrive:

Image is to show the weave only (correct is obviously black)

This seems accurate. The display had it a bit worn, Maybe weather it a bit by ironing and light sanding? Following your threads religiously

Yes it's waxed afterwards BTW. It's done after the sleeves are made :)

One of the samples that came was an 8Oz weight its quite light and feels good without being overly heavy/stiff

As light as it can go, without being translucent.

As for the build of the sleeves, it was mentioned that there is a seam or zipper on the inside edge, think this makes it easier to make the tunic effect.

The zipper was hell to get into my pair of sleeves! I had to hand sew mine in. I have two pairs of sleeves and in my second pair I did strechy material instead of the zipper and wow it works NICE. These sleeves need to be tight so losing or gaining weight is an issue as the sleeves get baggy.

So I've completed the first sleeve prototype, thing went well pleating looked good and I've also found the perfect fabric ,so I'll be ordering it next payday

I don't know if you posted what the material is before (you probably did) but could you tell us about the material that you found?
Thanks

I am working on the stiffness of the hood. There is a medium pellon that can be used to fuse the two layers together. As I look at the pics and read here I question if the hood is attached to the tunic or is it part of the 'cape' . Making it a part of the cape, as noted, can make it pretty heavy in the back.
Did those who have constructed the hood fuse the two layers? If not, what did you use to give it the stiffness.?

From what I can see of the hood its a double thickness of fabric and at the front there is a channel sewn in ,I think that there is something inserted into it to give it its shape ,like a corset boning would

There is a small strip of foam that has been topstitched into the hood that helps it to hold it's shape. It almost looks like an after thought. I will be including this detail INSIDE of the two layers of the hood to keep it hidden, but also to help maintain the shape of the hood. Something like this should have been done on the Ep. II and III hoods. The Jedi would have looked less like wet noodles if it had been. A similar thing was done on the Scream/ Ghostface hoods to help maintain shape.

this is certainly not the right fabric yet (wrong weave 3/2) but it's certainly close just awaiting a sample! it has the right interfacing layer from the looks just needs to loose one weft thread haha (which i may just pull out from this if it works hahaha)

For those of us on a budget for the first costume revision, if dyed, would this be alright though for non-upclose looks? Do you remember where you found the fabric by chance??

Thanks SO much!

I have played with the boning at the front as well as some light weight foam. There is a good weight of pellon to adhere to the inside layer but I think I prefer the light foam combined with the boning up front. I used light pellon and batting for my Barriss Hood because it stands off like this one but this stands further away from the helmet with such a deep curve at the bottom. Boning and foam it is.
