Kylo Ren Fabric

Hi guys , i just joined ... Sorry if i'm late to this Fabric hunt you guys are on.

But i found this fabric on Amazon (don't know if i can add links to sales - but search for this phrase & you'll find it. )

CHENILLE SOLID BASKET WEAVE BLACK FABRIC

it's sold by the yard - 59" wide , has a slightly reflective sheen when light catches it & is as close as i've found myself. Ironically its made by a company who could have direct connections to the Empire. based in california.

They don't ship to UK unfortunately , so i'll need to get something similar for myself :(

we assessed that fabric a few pages back ^^ the weave and materiel is not a great match as chinlee is a "fluffy" yarn materiel vs the cotton used but will do for some in a pinch ! as a secondary to the custom weave my preference would be a black cotton blend

we discovered the screen fabric was not mass produced but actually custom woven ergo my project run for the fabric :)

I'm a little nervous.. Do you think they will deliver on time? It's so far out that it leaves very little room for delays of we want to finish ours by December.. Feel confident that they will be on time with how big a demand you are generating here?

Husker I did ask for them to estimate based on 300 meters even though the initial was for 100 meters I can only put faith in them as a professional entity when I get the final total I will speak with them as we arnt using any crazy yarns stock is not a problem here black cotton yarn is unlikely to become an issue to source I will check in with them as production starts and will visit the factory personally to update you all

I believe its the same fabric I got from the same place. don't waste your money. I got a swatch and it was too fuzzy and the weave was too tight.

welcome to the RPF and thank you !!

Any new information on what in the world the coating might be? That part has me stumped. I'm not even sure where to begin on that aspect.

the coating has troubled me too haha i'm trying to step back and look objectively outside of typical coatings i may consider misting Metalic Silver or Pewter onto the fabric from a meter and see how it looks

Hey guys,

This is actually my first post and actual first real costume i am putting together. I have read this entire thread and am just astounded by how hard it is to find this fabric.

Anyways I am going to be looking as hard as I can in my area and see what I can find. What ever I do find I will post on to here.

Amazing isn't it? You'd think this fabric would be something you can just pick up at any fabric store... Nope! I couldn't believe how impossible it is to locate

when i first looked at the cloak/hood i thought burlap. I know the sign says cotton/wool but the way it frills out it looks so much like a burlap.

Do we know if the outer jacket,or even the inner pleated jacket should be lined or just bound edges as the lining would ad another discussion into the thred

I'll have to review later but my feelings are lined I'm sure we see a flat black lining on the Vanity Fair shoot when the lower part is flapping in the wind

I am making this costume for a friend and have the outer tunic 80% done in black Monk's cloth. I too have been experimenting with several different coatings to get the effect. It is indeed a problem to get the correct look. I will just keep experimenting. Interesting chat here though.

My question, however, where do they get the information that there are three layers of tunic? It indicates on the plaque that there are three but the pants are black denim. Does one conclude there is a cotton shirt under the pleated middle layer? Could just be a t-shirt. lol

The way it seems to be constructed is

Layer 1. Shirt with pleated sleeves and denim pants and boots

Layer 2. Midcoat made of wool. Pleated to the knees top to bottom.

Layer 3 and 3a. Basket weave surcoat with inner lining that is same shape as the surcoat. The bottom billows. It's made of a cotton or wool or linen. It is inside the surcoat

Layer 4. Caplet and hood

When you look at the HR pics from celebration there is the outer tunic of basket weave cotton and it is sleeveless. You can see the next layer which has the pleated sleeves and the pleated panels. You can see the black denim pants. You can see the gloves. The hood is attached to the outer tunic and of the same fabric. The "scarf" or 'cape' as I could refer to it is of the same fabric as the outer tunic. You can't see the innermost layer unless you 'assume' it is the same fabric as the neck guard and that looks like cotton. What do the boots look like? Are they plain black jack boots?

Here's where it get confusing, when you say "is the outer tunic of basket weave cotton and it is sleeveless." The next layer which was visible in person and in some shots is a pleated wool midcoat. Then there are sleeves (pleated) and cotton.

The boots have strips, they appear to be almost knee length. Here's a video.

Is there a thread for the sleeve material? I hit a local 3-story fabric warehouse, found a pique material that seemed perfect, but it turned out to be a really dark blue instead of black..... :(
