James Bond: Skyfall

Am I the only one who would love to see some sort of elaboration on Silva's backstory, similar to The Governor in TWD? A great villain, but his screen time was definitely lacking.

I was hoping they would get a little more involved with Silva's history as an agent during the era when Hong Kong was being released from British rule. But the movie was already almost 2.5 hours long :lol

...

What i really miss are the proper gadgets, the proper humour with Q, and the slightly over the top action and womanising.

...
Bond is about excess, outrageous stunts and action, witty one liners and boombastic John Barry music.

...
I'm not saying give us a completely over the top movie, but to tone this "gritty" stuff down and add some fun into these movies.

I don't want my Bond movie going experience to be the same as watching an HBO crime show or any other generic action movie.

....

i left the theater saying the exact same thing

i got more of a bourne vibe then a bond one...

Again, watch the early Connery Bond films. This was more in their shadow than that of later Bond.

Saw it yesterday and couldn't agree more. It was done very much in the tone of the classic Bond movies. Unfortunately, many movie goers will miss that or have not ever connected with that type of Bond before.

I loved some of the obvious references to earlier times. Having the Aston Martin back with it's very classic weaponry was great! I like where things are going, and knowing that some characters have finite a finite character life was refreshing and handled well.

Overall, as classic Bond movies go, I liked it a lot. :thumbsup

I really didn't enjoy this film at all.

Bond belongs in the past in my humble opinion. Bourne is a much better modern day version.

First Bourne was awesome. The next two the director ruined with shaky cam to the point I can't watch them. Even Damon said it was too much.

Saw Skyfall last night and love love loved it.

Again, I completely agree.

Finally saw Skyfall last night, absolutely loved it from start to finish. All of the little nods and such to the classic Connery flicks were great, and Q's quip about the exploding pen brought a big grin to my face.

Me too! :thumbsup

Bond is NOT Bourne and Bourne could NEVER be Bond - apples and oranges.

A part of me wonders if this is a generational difference as far as preferences are concerned. I grew up with the classic Bond, and while Bourne is all glitz and chock full of action, the classic Bond movies were more story centric and less dependent solely on action sequences to keep the audience engaged; Skyfall stands well on the classic style.

...but there again, today's audience has a very short attention span, so without things constantly blowing up, much of the subtlety of Bond is lost on much of the viewing audience. I really don't think that movies like Bourne could really even stand on their own without being dependent on the non-stop action sequences.

...it's Nascar (with it's pit crew and driver fights) vs F1 (with handshakes and respect)...:lol

I love the Bourne movies if only because they helped up Bond's game and gave us Casino Royale.

Bourne is a convining spy, when you see him in London, he just looks like the generic young american tourist abroad. Completely blends in. Bond has always been more of a provocateur. He sticks out like a sore thumb and helps flush the bad guys out.

Why? Helm is not in the same league as Bond and Bourne.

I was was referring to the comment made above regarding how Bourne owes his existence to Ian Flemming's James Bond. I wanted to add matt Helm to that as well.

As for Matt Helm not being in the same league as Bond or Bourne, well if you are talking about the Dean Martin Matt Helm movies, then yes. That version of Matt Helm was the inspiration for Austin Powers. The Matt Helm of the novels was very different and was very much in the same league as Bond and Bourne.

There was talk once of reviving the Matt Helm movies, but with a more serious tone. I say leave that world to Bond and Bourne. I wouldnt mind seeing something along the same lines as what Dean Martin did, but dialed down from Austin Powers. Everyone could use a little light-hearted adventure every now and then!

I loved Skyfall. I cant wait to see it on blu ray! I think most will agree it is the best looking Bond movie. It was visually stunning!

I absolutely loved the assassination sequence in Shanghai. The whole glass and reflections

I wonder if there was an intentional Blade Runner reference there? The shot of bond moving through the darkened building, gun at the ready, lit by advertising and the sequence where the assassin is hanging off the building had that vibe for me.
