Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

I was able to keep my torso in one piece @ 393.5, but I am also a wiry guy with a 32" waist. I could just slip into it. A couple of us had talked about running extra strips on each side (paper build), but I never heard any more about it after that.
I'm the same waist so i might keep it one piece....but i noticed that it has a pin or something coming out on the torso right on to of shoulder..like it opens upward like a clam...that's all i can compare it to..lol..like the picture

wow iron leo, that looks really good! ladman's legs look real clean too!

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

Thanks everyone for the comments!

Using 3/8 foam for everything is becoming quite the challenge. next time around i think i will go 1/4.

has anyone found a good spot to put Chicago screw in the knees?

I originally thought those were an FX goof, but then they were showing up in other places. Never figured out if they served a real purpose or not :confused

1/4" foam is going to seem like a cakewalk for you :lol
I had a lot of problems getting my knees to articulate correctly. I ended up using a two-point hinge on each side (ironmaided uses something similar) that I taped in, tested, and repositioned.

Have you seen where people have used pop bottles for their hinges? I couldn't find any link right now, but they use the cap as one side and then the bottle top (with legs cut around it) as the other. Fasten each side, screw the cap on one turn, fasten and you're done. I'm not saying use this permanently, but if you cut a couple bottles down and just duct tape each side in, you could test it with it on and then just adjust and retape the caps without damaging the foam. Figure out your hinge points from there, then either use those caps or replace them with whatever screws. Maybe that's more of a pain in the ass than it's worth, but if it saves putting holes in your foam... Anyways just a thought:lol

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

JFCustom was the one who used bottle caps and the heads from bottles to articulate his knee/elbow joints. I think he has a 'How to' in his Foam Shortcuts thread.

I think for my knees I'll just run a piece of elastic inside from the thigh down to the inside of the knee part in the shin mostly just to keep them together. I don't think they need anything like chicago screws in the knee joints like I'm using for the elbows.

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

hey everyone i am starting on my armor and have been looking at the scale factor you have. im 5'9 and am having trouble getting the scale to look right any help would be awesome

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

ka5p3r, there is a page in this thread multiple times with a scale chart. the best thing to do is to measure one part of your body, match that length to the part in pep designer, and then use whatever scale factor that is on all the other parts. You will have to mess around with the helmet, hands, and fingers on your own.

Bottle Caps? that just sounds weird. I was thinking of making a bracket out of my foam to run along side each leg to help it to bed and say in place. I also have ordered some swim suit fabric that is very elasticity. i was going to use that on my fingers in the had as well.

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

The bottle caps were just the bolt details, they weren't part of the actual hinging mechanism (I don't think at least).

I'm with P4r4dox86, the knee joints probably don't need a real hinge in them. I've wrecked my knee joints basically every time I wear and pose in my old War Machine because your knee bends in more complex ways than a single axis hinge. My plan for my Iron Patriot is to use a two axis joint but just use heavy elastic.

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

Here is the knee prototype I am using, however the actual will be made of styrene, foam and chicago screws. Maybe this will help? It seems to work well on my MK42

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

There's a two-point hinge! That's a lot like what I use.
And I gave up looking for pictures of that hinge. It was just the cut-off top of a 20 oz plastic pop bottle and the actual screw on cap used as the actual rotating joint on each side. A lot more durable than it sounds.

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

Yeah that's the 2 axis joint that I've seen in action and it works beautifully. The middle section can be made out of a solid material (foam, styrene, etc) but the two arms are just elastic bands with some sort of faux covering over them to hide that it's elastic.

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

I used the bottlecap design on my MkVII arms and it did well. Worked well on my War Machine too. Tried it on the legs of the War Machine: Fail. I'm using styrene and Chicago Screws on the arm hinges for the Iron Patriot and the Mk42. The bottles didn't seem to "flow" as well in those 2 suits

I thought I was going nuts.

Don Juan- Its looking good so far! Keep it up!

Ladman- Awesome! The legs look great! Your build is coming out great so far :):thumbsup

Joker53- Awesome! Looks cool with the lights!

A two point hinge seems like a really good idea. I just used one joint (some metal brackets with chicago screws) for my mk VI arms and legs and it worked fairly well for both, but it made the back of the thigh crumpled up when bending the leg sharply so i think a two point system would be a lot better especially for the legs.

Re: Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! Check out page 66!

hmmmmm as for the knee topic. .here's mine, i'm using a two point articulation here. . .almost the same concept of a two point hinge . .i'll be using this also to my IP later on

I watched that vid last night; I was a bit bummed I didn't see it before I made mine, so, on my next one, I'm "stealing" your kick ass design. LOVE how the knee articulates!
