Jack Sparrow Costume Build by Indy Magnoli

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

Wow!! now thats a Sparrow that I can look up to! (I'm a newbie member on here) but have been piecing together my own Sparrow since last october, Indy: did you get the paisley vinyl imported? I think it was called "abbey mahogany" or something, I am still to dress my baldric and frog as not ordered any yet myself, your pictures on the french binding are a MASSIVE weight off my shoulders- the past few nights I've been ummming and aahhhing over how the dickens to do this build!!! slightly off topic to the baldric but- I found this RPF forum whilst trying to track down the ridiculously infamous "anamarie buckle..." - the version from back home in blighty somewhere thats a couple of quid compared to the 40+USD replicas without any joy 'till I discovered here! (My jack just needs proper buckles, boots and the odd piece here and there to complete) I shall be popping a few pics of mine for your perusal!

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

Thanks! I got the vinyl in a trade, so I'm not 100% sure of the original source, but yes, I think it is Abbey Mahogany.

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

Wow that is extremely impressive! Fantastic attention to detail! Stunning finished costume :] Keep it up!

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

The vinyl is available in the US from Joann fabrics
Home Decor Signature Series Vinyl Abbey Mahogany* at Joann.com
You're in luck, as it is on sale right now 60% off which should help offset the shipping. You have to buy a full yard though.....but maybe you can use the extra for trade or sell it to someone else.....It is also available at other places on the web, so you might want to check around for best price/shipping combo.

I made the original discovery embossed pattern on the vinyl a long time ago on a Relic brand purse,
Confessions of a Jackaholic / Baldric Vinyl
since then I can't seem to quit seeing the stuff the design is so imprinted on my brain!! I've seen it on everything from sofas, to bar stools to pillows to photo albums, so if you search around a little you might just find some in your town??

The pattern on the vinyl is mirror imaged to what is on the leather used for Jack's baldric, but it is the same size and scale. There's a Jack who has took great pains to map out the baldric on the leather by the pattern that is on Jack's from various screen grabs, to get an exact screen accurate baldric not only where the embossed pattern lays on Jack's baldric, but by the nature of the mapping it also yields an exact construction pattern--which is curved by the way and not straight cuts.

Baldric Mapping
The belt is in two parts because the way the embossed pattern is stamped on the leather hide in a tiled effect, there are breaks in the embossed pattern on the leather that is unique to each hide, which does not occur on the vinyl but is irrelivant anyway, I was only mentioning this because if you reverse the Baldric Mapping image and map it onto your vinyl, then reverse those tracings, you will have an SA construction pattern for the baldric and frog. You need to allow for what the edging will cover, cut on the outside of the thick green line that represents the edging width......don't forget to reverse the tracing or you'll have a left-handed baldric instead!!

Then follow Indy Magnoli's construction instructions, and there ya go!!
Great job BTW, IM!! I like the way you did the leather on the back of the frog to smooth it out and strengthen it!

Oh, and did you find the Anna Marie buckles. A friend got me a couple from someplace in UK supposed to have supplied the ones to POTC 1-3, if you're still on the hunt I'll see if he still has the information......

Good luck with your Jack!

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

I just got my Jack Sparrow shirt from Pauliepoos and, even though it a really great shirt, I was amazed how similar it is to the one I tea stained above. So, anyone wanting a cheaper alternative (and easier to get since I know Paulette is very busy), I'd highly recommend Museum Replicas Early Renaissance Shirt:
Early Renaissance Shirt

All you need to do is add some strings to the front, remove the velcro from the cuffs (and add a button and button hole if you really want) and tea stain it.

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

Someone just e-mailed me, asking for measurements of my baldric. Here are the sizes I used (taken from my ACME baldric), though the lengths may vary depending on your size:

Belt width: 2 1/8"
Long belt: 45" (this one I shortened a bit to get a better proportion on myself, so I imagine this will need to be changed quite a bit depending on your height, etc).
Short belt: 22 1/4" (to the buckle fold); 24 1/2" (full length, unfolded)
Belt keeper width: 3/4"
Frog:
-short edge (top edge when worn): 11 7/8" (folded)
-short edge (top edge when worn): 16 1/4" (unfolded)
-long edge (bottom edge when worn): 13" (folded)
-long edge (bottom edge when worn): 17 3/4" (unfolded)
-frog strap width: 2 1/2"

This would be good info to add to the wiki tutorial.

Kind regards,
Magnoli

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

Just had another day out as Jack... more photos to come. But this one is one of my favorites: "They're behind me... aren't they?"

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. UPDATE: Baldric!

Thanks! In the year between these two galas, I upgraded the Shirt, Baldric, Dragon Ring, Sword/Scabbard, added the two charms to the belt and redyed the pants. All I really need to do now is get an accurate flintlock...

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. NEW PHOTOS pg 6

This is the day that you'll always remember as the day you caught Captain Jack Sparrow:

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. NEW PHOTOS pg 6

I finally got a decent sized snake vertebrae:

As you can see in the photo, I've got plenty spare, so if you need one, shoot me a message.

Re: Jack Sparrow Outfit by Feb 18th... !!!

Worked on the breeches... they started out a dark blue like this:

So, instead of buying dye remover (I'm all about cutting costs), I soaked them in about 2 cups of bleach and 8 cups of water for about five minutes. After rinsing them out and line-drying them... they now look like this:

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg291/indy_magnoli/Pirates/breeches.jpg

I'm really amazed at how much better they look. Now I'm debating whether to darken them up with some brown dye or just leave them. I really like the worn-grey look they are now.

I know this is an old thread but I'm in the middle of just finishing up my own Jack Sparrow costume (on a really tight budget). I have the same breeches from the same vendor but HOLY HELL the blue pants will NOT BLEACH for the life of me! I've just about given up at this point. They must be using some new kind of insane dye because I used darn near 50/50 bleach and soaked it in an hour and they're still navy blue. Any thoughts?

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. NEW PHOTOS pg 6

If they're the same ones I had, boil them in a large pot with Rit color remover. It all comes right out. Also you'll probably want to wash them in vinegar soon to stop the bleach from dissolving them over time.

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. NEW PHOTOS pg 6

Sounds like they've switched to a synthetic material. I'm not 100% certain, but I seem to remember the bleach I used was the cheap stuff (so relatively low concentration) and it worked easily. Your only option then would be to use some paints to try and mask the color. If you use an orange-brown spray paint, that should work to tone down the blue and give you a generally distressed appearance. It might be your only option for a quick, cheap fix.

Edit since Risu and I were posting at the same time: Does color remover work on synthetic fabrics? I can't imagine that working. Risu, did yours seem like pure cotton?

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. NEW PHOTOS pg 6

wtf you look just like him, facial features and all. I must say that you are quite lucky in that aspect. I have seen some good jack sparrow costumes, but the face just throws it off, your face is perfect for this outfit.

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. NEW PHOTOS pg 6

I might just go the paint route like you said. That's what I did with the Coat and it came out pretty well. And yes, despite the tag that says "100% cotton" I'm guessing it's a total lie because it feels NOTHING like cotton and it also hasn't shrunk a hair (tried to shrink 'em slightly to no avail... had the waist refitted with a fold-over stitch and worked well).

Re: Jack Sparrow Complete. NEW PHOTOS pg 6

Which type of pants are these? The ones I had were cotton, I haven't seen a pair that are anything other than cotton or linen, except maybe the ebay ones. Those could be anything, but the ones I tried were made for people who literally didn't have an arse, so I threw them out. I've never tried color remover on synthetics, but it would be worth a shot. Bleach has never once removed color for me, it just disintegrates the fabric. I washed a pair of Mal Reynolds pants in a heavy bleach concentrate 5 times and barely changed the shade, but they sure as hell fell apart a couple weeks later.
