Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build - COMPLETE!

Thanks mate :D!

So, tomorrow night there is a pre-screening of IM3 at our big cinema here in Adelaide. Apparently Disney gave our local Con's organisers some free tickets for them to fill the seats and put on a bit of a media event...Guess who got an invite to suit up for the event and see the movie a few days early? ;) The organisers saw my suit at the Con on debut and want it at the event, along with my friend in his Mk VI armour and, apparently (and hopefully ;)) some Ironette dancers!! I'm stoked to say the least!! Spent the last few days running repairs on the suit so it will be in top shape :D.

Not that you need stranger support, but I am so excit
ded for you on this, you better do it. You have this one ready, Keep the wife happy too though.
I OK so anyways it will take a while to make this all work.... Good luck!!!!

Lol thanks mate, I've never met you in person but we've spoken enough that you're not a 'stranger' and I still appreciate the support :D She's happy because I managed to secure her a ticket to the screening as well ;) Because I need help putting on the suit :p.

EDIT: Thanks to you as well Dadpool, you posted while I was typing lol.

Hey man, I'm from Aus too! haha nice to see another guy from Australia :D anyway I've started my Mark IV/VI suit out of foam. Two things I was wondering: the foam your using, is it the camping mat from Kmart haha idk, the blue just makes it look similar and second this has prbably be answered but what did you do to the foam before you painted to seal it it? I was thinking of just using the diluted PVA glue idea :) Thanks

Sorry for the slow reply JW, I was away for a week in Perth and only got back last night. Glad to see more Aussies slowly filtering into the site :D. The foam I used was indeed foam camping mats from Kmart, they were the 10mm thick dual density (one side grey, one side greenish) ones. I also used some of the less dense 5mm (yellow) ones that I used for some other things, and I used that for the neck piece. I also used 1, 2 and 3mm craft foam from my local Riot Craft store (but you can also get it from Spotlight etc) for some detailed parts like the gun rails on the forearms.

As for sealing, I used straight PVA glue to seal the foam initially (usually 2-3 coats) and then used an aerosol body deadener I found at Super Cheap Auto to give is a bit more of a somewhat flexible, smooth finish. I was quite happy with the results considering it was an untested method :). There are heaps of test and progress shots in the thread, so have a read through and decide if it's maybe something you'd like to go with, or you might want to try another method :). I used different methods on my Stepdaughters MK VII (link in my sig) that you might want to check out, otherwise there are heaps of other guys around the RPF that are always pushing the boundaries on foam builds. I would definitely recommend you check out Doc Holiday's thread (http://www.therpf.com/f24/docs-foam...led-chest-back-finished-flex-test-vid-149883/) as he is a big inspiration and always working on new techniques.

Okay cool, thanks man! I've had slow progress lately because of school, but I'm getting use to trying to do stuff after school and that but yeah. I have a shoulder on it's 4th coat of diluted PVA glue drying now for a spray paint test. Hopefully that turns out good haha. Thanks for the tips aswell, i'll get some of that thinner foam and use it for the fingers I think :) Also your builds are amazing man! Keep going!

For the foam I looked at the camping style mats fom k-mart and the like, but for the square meterage they seemed a tad expensive. I use anti fatigue mats from bunnings. I think the brand is Best Step or something like that. $30 for a roll. cant remembet the exact measurements but something along the lines of 1.2m x 2.1m Aprox 6mm thick. Only problem is that it comes rolled so it needs to be flattened out first. I have used it on all my stuff and seems fine.

I've picked up a big roll of that from Bunnings since finishing this suit to mess around with and give a shot next time I try a foam piece as I've heard good things. Still haven't had a go with it yet though lol.

my whole suit was made from that except the chest, works great... I left it out side under cover for a night face down so it flattened and that horrible smell left.

Eventually I figure I'll give it a shot. Atm I just have this giant roll of foam sitting in our bedroom (which I'm sure will eventually irk the Mrs enough that she'll make me remove it to somewhere else; unfortunately we lack a lot of storage space in our current rental property) waiting for me to be enthused enough about something to start another foam build. My friend who has a Mk VI armour uses this foam for his builds, and his stuff is always amazing quality, so thus far I have heard/seen only glowing recommendations.

Nice build! Will be curious to see the outcome, after repairing the damage and reworking some of the pieces.

And congrats on the win!

Thanks! :D Oh, and OMG I just realised after this comment that I forgot to upload any pics from the pre screening night!! Remedy that I will now!! I think this should do lol...

There aren't any HUGE obvious differences. Most of them are minor. You will see that I have painted a few more accent pieces on how, and there is a decided lack of duct tape holding the abs together. The helmet also now sits MUCH better and a lot more snug to my head meaning I can move my head without it flopping all over the bloody place lol.

EDIT: I don't know why all the landscape pics attached so small...

wow, ahahah this is amazing! :) great work. I was just wondering if you could tell me how you set up the magnets in the helmet? Like what magnets, where do they go and where from. Only asking because I can't find any specific magnets anywhere!

Hey mate,

I used rare earth magnets, bought from Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets - Aussie Magnets . I used small disc shaped ones. The order quotes them as "10mm x 3mm Disc North Pole Dent (Rare Earth) (Packs of 20, 50, 100) " and I bought a pack of 20. These worked perfectly, were strong enough to hold the faceplate on effectively and not too strong as to make it impossible to remove lol. I used extra foam inside to attach the magnets to so that it overlapped and I placed one either side of the 'lip' part of the helmet, one inside each side of the helmet just forward of the 'ear' pieces, and one either side of the top 'mohawk' piece, then just set up corresponding magnets on the faceplate itself. Just ensure you get the poles of the magnets the right way around so they attract and don't repel lol.

hmmmm I was just wondering if I was gonna make the faceplate of my rescue armor helmet removable (I'm not very good with electronics) but now I am definitely doing it with magnets. Thanks for the tip!
