Hey man, I'm from Aus too! haha nice to see another guy from Australiaanyway I've started my Mark IV/VI suit out of foam. Two things I was wondering: the foam your using, is it the camping mat from Kmart haha idk, the blue just makes it look similar and second this has prbably be answered but what did you do to the foam before you painted to seal it it? I was thinking of just using the diluted PVA glue idea
Thanks
Sorry for the slow reply JW, I was away for a week in Perth and only got back last night. Glad to see more Aussies slowly filtering into the site. The foam I used was indeed foam camping mats from Kmart, they were the 10mm thick dual density (one side grey, one side greenish) ones. I also used some of the less dense 5mm (yellow) ones that I used for some other things, and I used that for the neck piece. I also used 1, 2 and 3mm craft foam from my local Riot Craft store (but you can also get it from Spotlight etc) for some detailed parts like the gun rails on the forearms.
As for sealing, I used straight PVA glue to seal the foam initially (usually 2-3 coats) and then used an aerosol body deadener I found at Super Cheap Auto to give is a bit more of a somewhat flexible, smooth finish. I was quite happy with the results considering it was an untested method. There are heaps of test and progress shots in the thread, so have a read through and decide if it's maybe something you'd like to go with, or you might want to try another method
. I used different methods on my Stepdaughters MK VII (link in my sig) that you might want to check out, otherwise there are heaps of other guys around the RPF that are always pushing the boundaries on foam builds. I would definitely recommend you check out Doc Holiday's thread (http://www.therpf.com/f24/docs-foam...led-chest-back-finished-flex-test-vid-149883/) as he is a big inspiration and always working on new techniques.
For the foam I looked at the camping style mats fom k-mart and the like, but for the square meterage they seemed a tad expensive. I use anti fatigue mats from bunnings. I think the brand is Best Step or something like that. $30 for a roll. cant remembet the exact measurements but something along the lines of 1.2m x 2.1m Aprox 6mm thick. Only problem is that it comes rolled so it needs to be flattened out first. I have used it on all my stuff and seems fine.

Nice build! Will be curious to see the outcome, after repairing the damage and reworking some of the pieces.
And congrats on the win!
wow, ahahah this is amazing!great work. I was just wondering if you could tell me how you set up the magnets in the helmet? Like what magnets, where do they go and where from. Only asking because I can't find any specific magnets anywhere!
Hey mate,
I used rare earth magnets, bought from Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets - Aussie Magnets . I used small disc shaped ones. The order quotes them as "10mm x 3mm Disc North Pole Dent (Rare Earth) (Packs of 20, 50, 100) " and I bought a pack of 20. These worked perfectly, were strong enough to hold the faceplate on effectively and not too strong as to make it impossible to remove lol. I used extra foam inside to attach the magnets to so that it overlapped and I placed one either side of the 'lip' part of the helmet, one inside each side of the helmet just forward of the 'ear' pieces, and one either side of the top 'mohawk' piece, then just set up corresponding magnets on the faceplate itself. Just ensure you get the poles of the magnets the right way around so they attract and don't repel lol.
