Unlimited Run Iron Giant Bolt/Screw kit w/ electronic light and sound

Oh! I should mention...

There are only 4 more electronics kits left in the first batch. I received more orders than I estimated (A big thank you to all of you for that).

I am ordering more components today, but the 2nd batch of kits could be delayed by a bit. Likely it won't, but I figured I should mention it anyway.

Just to be clear... All orders already placed (and the next four) are in the 1st batch and are still on schedule.

Looking forward to your kit!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing photos of them completed.

Had a pretty productive day today.

This is beautiful! The quality on the V3 molds looks great. Do you need special (expensive) equipment to do vacuum casting at home?

Well, I actually misspoke when I said "vacuum casting". What I should have said was pressure vessel casting (exactly the opposite. ha ha).

The equipment is not especially expensive (a few hundred dollars). But, a buddy of mine (who is a much more experienced caster than I) taught me a few techniques that solved the issues I was going to use a pressure vessel for. Which is a blessing since using a pressure vessel would have likely tripled the time it would take to cast the spirals.

I'm very happy with the quality of the parts. Like any model kit, if you want a perfect finish it will require SOME sanding and there my be a small blemish or two that you'll want to putty over. But if you watch the video with Adam and Norm they got pretty good results by just priming and painting the raw parts. And these parts are even better quality.

Awesome. Glad to hear you were able to get the quality you wanted without any added expense or time. :)

So I just ordered 2 kits - I assume I'm in the second batch that will be delayed - If delivery will be later than 2nd week of June would it be possible to delay shipment until beginning of July. (or is that a forgone conclusion anyway?)

Thanks for your kit!

Thanks so much for your order. It's very possible that your kits will ship before the 2nd week of June. But, just to be safe, PM me your order details (name and address) and I'll make sure to delay your shipment if needed.

Update:

We hit our first big snag today. I got the remastered cone part. The cone is the part that's pressed to trigger the lights and sound. This means it must be able to slide freely over the center shaft. Unfortunately I was a little too generous on the clearance and the gap between the shaft and the cone is larger than I find acceptable. So, I'm going to make an adjustment to the model and have it reprinted. This should put the new master in hand in 10 days.

The magnets (that hold the cap on) are in transit. I expect to have these in plenty of time.

Here is some big news...
I am working on a big change to the electronics kit. First there is a change to the code to give two light options

1. All lights turn on and off with the beep (like in the movie).
2. Light turn on and off in sequence with the beep (kinda like a VU meter)

Second is a PCB board. Kevin Kibbe (@Kbkibbe on Twitter) designed a board for the kit. Obviously soldering the components to a board is a big improvement over wiring components directly to each other.

The boards are in production now. If they work out (which we expect they will) they will be included (free) in every kit ordered before they are in hand and fully tested. The boards will be an extra $5 if the kit is ordered after that.

If anyone has an electronics project they want hep with, I highly recommend you reach out to Kevin. He has been great to work with. kbkibbe@gmail.com

Unfortunate about the delay, but stuff happens. I think we'd all rather have it perfect and wait another 10 days.

Super cool news about the PCB board. Is it possible to switch between the modes? Or do you choose a path and soldier it that way permanently?

Yeah, but fortunately the cone is the easiest part to cast and should go rather quick.

You will need to get to the board and connect/disconnect a jumper. So technically you can change between modes, but really you'll just want to pick one and go with it. I personally like the new sequence because It highlights that the lights are separate.

Found about this great kit on YouTube watching Adam Savage build his kits. This is a must have kit for me, loved the movie. Look forward to getting this kit and building it. Again GREAT kit looks awesome. Thank You for offering it to us.

Would anyone purchasing one be interested in finishing one for me? I was semi-happy with my paint job on the original but I butchered the electronics and would like to have someone more experienced do the job.

So if the electronics are on a board, it will be all plug-in vs solder?

I'm interested in a kit, but curious as to how the updates are shaking out.

Hi

So if the electronics are on a board, it will be all plug-in vs solder?

No, there is soldering involved. Although it is fairly simple soldering work. I am planning to offer a pre-soldered option for the electronics, but I don't have pricing on that yet. Likely between $10 and $25.

The last update still holds true. Casting continues on all the parts except the cone. The new cone should be in hand this week.

All electronic components except the PCBs are in hand.

The PCBs shipped from the factory yesterday.

It's looking like I will be shipping the first kits by the end of next week, and in rapid succession from then on.

OK Question. If I order this and build it properly, Once I turn it on can I expect it to lead me to my own Iron Giant?

... Obviously. This is a fully functioning Iron Giant homing screw. Did you expect any less?

So you lose a fingerprint or two. That's the fun of soldering. Might buy multiple kits and try different paint styles. I'm thinking IG steampunk?
