You kinda made my point here but ill retell it anyways.
So... what about people who are always on the internet anyway? Ill tell you. Its been said before. When it is down for service. Your console will be useless. Its not really a strong argument to make. Thats one of my main gripes asides the used games thing. My router has to work. My isp cant be doing maintenence. Neither can microsoft. Nor can they be down like sony was when it was hacked. I dont see how anyone would be ok with this. If they were id question their sanity. Why buy something if your not bothered about it working all the time?
Its not about what shouldnt happen or what would probably happen. Its what could happen. No one looks at the bigger picture.
If people are ignorant to these issues and even though it may not really affect them. And they dont care about not playing if anything connection wise happens. Then poor them. Because they will be affected down the line when the company stops making enough money. Because 75 percent of people do see it as an issue. And by the time they realise. Itll be too late because the console becomes second rate.
Hey, I'm not saying it isn't an issue, nor that it isn't possible. But I think what you'll find is that, put simply, not everyone is as concerned about it as you are. I also expect that, if there comes a day when XBL goes down for maintenance or whathaveyou, people will just suck it up. They'll gripe, but at that point, what are they gonna do? They already bought the box. And while it's POSSIBLE that this will happen, ask yourself how many times in the life of your console you've been unable to get online. Or even just unable to get online in a particular game.
For example, I can remember times when Battlefield Bad Company 2 was unavailable for multiplayer, due to server issues on DICE's end. Know what I did then? I turned off the console and went and did something else. I suspect that's what people will do. People might gripe, but I think the only way that'd REALLY screw folks is with an awful launch where the servers are overloaded, or with some extended outage of service. And even if there's a bad launch, the console will survive. I mean, people still play Diablo 3 and Sim City. People still bought those games even after an atrocious launch.
And in this business once you drop a clanger. Its extremely hard to recover. I believe the ps4 would have struggled to strive if ms didnt drop the ball. I like their console idea. But building a great console isnt enough. You need reputation. Ps3 Had the big server issues when they almost gave everyones details away. Their own version of the rrod. But its the main contender asides xbox. So now they have a chance to pull infront. As users have no where else to go.

I don't disagree with you. I think MS really screwed up with this. Their "always on" factor is a minor concern for me, but a concern nonetheless. I've never had a true ISP outage or a router issue I couldn't fix. I've not had extended outages of XBL, either, other than "We're taking it down from 9am to 3pm Eastern for maintenance."
However...
I have no desire in purchasing something that will one day become a brick.
...Jeyl raises a good point. At some point in the future, the console WILL be a brick, unless MS changes its policy, assuming they eventually stop supporting online access via the unit. Once that happens, yeah, it's a brick. This stands in contrast to, say, an old NES (assuming it still works).
