Interesting article on new xbox

Unplug your webcam. Or stick a post-it note over it. Problem solved.

Far from it... but whatever, let's just do what the Microsoft genius Don Mattrick told us to do, buy an Xbox 360. Which in the real world means buy five or six, cause they tend to break down, a lot ;)

Yep you can't cover it.

spanky, my smart phone isn't made to where I have to have the camera uncovered. If I put tape over it... It won't shut off... If the ISP goes down, I can still use the phone... And if my bill isn't paid... I can still text and check email through wifi...

The prob isn't that the xbone has new features that may be invasive... It's that you are FORCED to keep the line of view open. And the Internet connected or else it's a BRICK. And the new agreement you sign is not like iTunes... Your actually signing some legal rights away...

Two things:

1.) Do we have proof that you have to have the camera unobscured and the Kinect actually plugged in? Admittedly, I haven't watched the numerous videos out there, but can someone point me to where this has been confirmed?

2.) Is it that it has the capacity to monitor you, or the fact that you MUST not take steps to disable the monitoring capacities that bug you? Because if you're not already sticking tape over your phone camera or disabling the microphone, then it sounds like it's more the REQUIREMENT that bugs you rather than the actual need to do anything. Do you actually put tape over your phone? Or do you just like the idea that you COULD if you wanted to, and the phone would still work, so apple/motorola/samsung/LG/whoever is ok by you, but MS -- who is REQUIRING you to give them the capacity to spy on you in order to play video games -- is bad because they're REQUIRING you to do something you probably wouldn't do anyway?

If that reads as confusing, it's because I'm confused.

I get that you may just suck it up. But iv been having this discussion with a buddy. Why suck it up when theres a better option. Hes spent all his time trying to defend the xbox everytime iv told him why he should buy ps4. And not once has he tried to actually turn the tide and tell me why I should buy xbox over sony. Hes now changed his mind 2 days later. People who just say they will grin and bear it dont look far enough ahead. Just looks at the discussions goin off. Almost everyones ps4. How goods the xbox gonna be when your searching for players for ages cos everyone else has jumped ship when you decided to ignore whats happening around you. Theres a word to describe this behaviour. And im pointing no fingers and I know your just trying to show two sides to the story but the word is fanboy. Why pay more at aldi then at asda?

I've got a perfectly good reason to buy an XB One over a PS4. I like Halo more than I like any Sony exclusive. For me it's really that simple.

That's a good reason for choosing a side, sure.. but is Halo really worth all the bad stuff you'll be getting in the box?

None of that 'bad stuff' concerns me a whole lot to be honest with you. I'm not the person they're excluding with their policies, though I recognize there is a point of view that is. And frankly, I dismiss out of hand the conspiracy theory OMG teh microsoftz are watching me stuff. I just don't buy into the hysteria. I can count on one hand the number of times I've had an ISP goof in the last ten years and MS has made their mea culpas every time XBLive has been down for an extended period of time, afaik.

It is my firm assertion that all of this privacy stuff is being blown out of proportion. Within the first day of release people will be packet sniffing exactly what is being sent from the kinect back to Microsoft, and they know it. I have the utmost confidence that all of the customizable settings for it will work exactly as described.

supposedly if you block the xbox one's built in cam and mic it won't run just like if you turn off the kinnect. It's mandatory surveillance. It's also a sign that the american people are so brainwashed that they'll accept just about anything if you package it up nicely enough. We might as well just give up privacy at this point.

Source?

Have you got a source that mentions whether there will be any monitoring? It sounds like its all based on PS fan boys comments. What would thegy have to gain from it? What are the laws on this?

Many TVs have cameras these days, would you cover it and lose features based on speculation that the big bad corporations are spying on you?

Also, I ran a busy repair center and PS3s were much more unreliable than 360s. I own a couple of each machine and each have their merits.

I think I'll just leave this leaked XB One PR doc right here.

Xbox One Top 100 & Supporting E3 Q&A - Pastebin.com

Of particular interest to some of you will be the following passage:
"Q: How will you fully power down Xbox One? Do I have to unplug it or is there a power button?
A: Xbox One has a power button that allows you to turn the system all the way off, using the “Xbox nexus” on the front."

I imagine it's tough to use it to spy on you when it's turned off.

Better make sure not to have the blinds up when you're having sex, the government might record you from their satellites and put it up on the net.

Well if you have a Xbox One with Kinect 2.0, not only will they see/hear you doing it, if she/he is a member of the Tea Party or says the word "patriot" you get audited by the IRS also! :lol

They just keep making it harder and harder for me to want to give them my money anymore. Disgusting.

EDIT: Unless that's just a parody of the "only works in 21 countries" bit.

This aside, I still am seriously considering buying a PS4 and just living without Halo 5.

Looks like they're pointing out how ridiculous it is to launch only in certain territories. People don't make a big deal out of it until you show it to them in a different way that demonstrates just how stupid it is.

Definitely more heavy Microsoft waffling, the executives are feeling the noose tightening around there bad marketing
decisions, trying to lie there way into consumers homes.

Surprise Microsoft! consumers are a lot more savvy than you apparently can give them credit for.

You’ll will see a lot more backpedaling by this company before this next generation system war ends.

The suites at Microsoft now realize there plans for allowing only customers they deem worthy of when, how and where they
use there legal purchased games, is heading the Xbox One straight to the toilet and right down the drain.

I don't care how they try and respin this travesty of a launch or any changes they now make. I will never own another
Microsoft console and that is my consumer choice.

I own my living room not you Microsoft.

Xbox OFF!
PS4 ON!

:lol what a disgrace of a machine

Totally agreed. Just that 343 changed everything they shouldn't have changed and didn't change what they should have changed, meaning Halo 4 was meh. Did it leave me wanting more? Hell yes.. but it was really frustrating when the only things that made the game feel like a Halo game was MC's and Cortana's voices. None of the amazing music was anywhere to be heard except for some tiny snippet of the main theme and some horrible remix of Unforgotten/Never Forget track. And seeing as how the Halo 5 teaser featured the same aweful MC armor.... MEH. I'll rather go with the superior hardware and far better price tag.

That's a good reason for choosing a side, sure.. but is Halo really worth all the bad stuff you'll be getting in the box?

Could have been. Halo 3 was EASILY worth getting the 360 for:

E3: Halo 3 Trailer (HD 720p) - YouTube

This is the way the world ends

I'm not the person they're excluding with their policies

They're excluding everyone with their damn policies: "Buy the Xbone and a few years from now become the proud owner of a completely useless piece of schite"

Sort of like the Xbox 1.... you know the one that came out in 2001 became 50% useless when they closed down the Live service for it, even though people were still playing Halo 2 online and other games. Thankfully singleplayer is still fully operational which won't work with the Xbone - because of their POLICIES.

I imagine it's tough to use it to spy on you when it's turned off.

That is if you can even trust a word they're saying! :facepalm not to mention who says the thing doesn't have an internal battery that just happen to last 24 hrs.... and that's why they make us "check in" once every 24 hours. Is this paranoid BS? Hopefully! But in this day and age... who frakking knows? :wacko

All technology goes by the wayside eventually, whether it's through disuse or disrepair. That's sort of the game. I've heard reports that Steam has a kill switch type of program that in the event of Steam's ultimate demise you can continue to play the content you've downloaded. I imagine that after 10 years of Xbox One a similar thing might come into existence. I find it highly amusing that people are talking about what happens after this system that isn't even out yet gets old and unsupported. They aren't even dropping support for the 360 yet, and it's 8 years old. Unbunch your panties :lol

edit: but frankly, why even go that far? The only reason this thing would ever cease being supported is for its eventual successor. Which means more xbox live, which means servers are still up, which means your account could still be authenticated theoretically by a simple check. Even in the event that multiplayer and media services eventually go away for this thing in 10-15 years, it is entirely possible and likely that it would not become a brick, assuming you still have internet.

So you're perfectly okay with not being able to play your games, ANY of them, when MS's servers go down? And they will, you know.

The problem with always-online isn't our internet connection.. it's theirs. Every time an always-online game has had a problem, it's when the company's servers go down. For some reason, Microsoft (and its most vocal supporters) seem oblivious to this simple fact. In the past, whenever there was a server problem, or even just routine maintenance, on a service like XBL or PSN, the system itself remains functional, and you only lose online connectivity. Which is a pain if all you play is online multiplayer, but quite a few of us (myself included) play mostly single-player games. I don't feel like being locked out of my console entirely every time there's any kind of hiccup between me and them, regardless of which end it's on.

I expect a rather high percentage of MS's customers this holiday season aren't going to understand how this works. Initial sales will be high, but I predict a HUGE number of returns within the first two or three months because people take the thing home only to find out that it doesn't work. The only reason MS is being so forthcoming about it right now is because everyone is hammering them for information (and the ones reading that information are in the minority), but this is NOT the kind of thing they're going to push during the inevitable marketing campaign. There will be little tiny text at the bottom of the TV commercial that says "internet connection required", that will serve the legal (but not practical) purpose of notifying their customers of what their getting.

That's just the online requirement we're talking about.. shall we discuss the Kinect and used-game situation as well?

The used game situation isn't a situation. It's being left up to publishers, who I very highly doubt will want to rock the boat any further at this point. Frankly, the fact they they are allowing you to share digital content at all is amazing.

I remember several occasions where XBL has gone down and MS has made good on their customers when it has happened. Ala this situation from back in the day. XBL had extended downtime so everyone got a free game. xbox live down time compensation? - GameSpot.com

I have no doubt there will be issues, nothing ever runs perfectly all the time. But my gold subscription hasn't done me wrong yet and I don't expect this to change that.
