Interesting article on new xbox

been waiting for someone to bring up the fact that the Kinect needs ROOM for it to function properly, my living room is one weird shape, the kinect doesn't really know what to do with it, so i unplugged it. cant see a bunch of collage kids using these things in there 8x8 dorm rooms (collage kids being the game industry's bread and butter

it is an ugly little thing isnt it, oh well

Yeah the kinect sux. Used it ONCE, now it's collecting dust.

New xbox is apparently requires the new kinect to be connected to the console at all time, according to IGN.

The thing is is who cares if it has to be connected. Doesn't mean you have to actually use it. Just keep it plugged in and tuck away to the side. Problem solved.

I'm an x-box / microsoft hater, never bought an x-box or a 360, but I watched their release event today on TV and I can see building an Xbox one into a home as a universal control device to operate my lighting, temp control, audio/video system, securitym, and using their upgraded voice and video recognition controls with the new version of Kinect. I can see with a few software modification (that may be standard at or shorlty after release) being able to integrate the Xbox one into an overall home control system that I can connect with thtrough my phone.

May have been an underwhelming press event for some, but I can see some serious potential depending on what they allow people to do with it.

It's not clear yet if you can do that. If kenect doesn't sense something, it might not work. And if you can just tuck it away, why make it mandatory that it be connected? Just another thing in they way cluttering stuff up. More wires.....

that and those cameras freak me out, not being paranoid, i hear the little moter moving the eye around when the thing is turned off. too weird for me. i guess i could always point it away from my life and have it watch my star wars life size cutouts would be pretty funny

This has got to be the biggest failure I've seen in a company, ever. Way to completely alienate your fanbase, xbox.
1. yes, they say that it isn't always connected. But it DOES have to connect at least once every 24 hrs to play games.
2. No backwards compatibility. All your 360 games, throw them away.
3. NO USED GAMES! see ya Gamestop, gamefly, netflix, etc. Hey man, I just bought a cool game! Want me to bring it over to play it? NOPE! Hey man, I just had a really hard day, can I borrow your copy of blahbla? NOPE! People trying to play a game that has been previously registered to someone elses account will have to pay a FEE to play it. Nevermind that I already paid through the nose for the game. If you want to borrow it, YOU ALSO have to pay for it.
4. Top of the line system for hard core gamers? NOPE! generic broad spectrum media/entertainment all-in-one doohickey! Wait, you mean with this brand new VIDEO GAME console, I can watch tv AND search BING at the same time? You mean I can get personalized ads sent to my phone? You mean I can get exclusive NFL content? Where do I sign up?
5. Integrated camera and mic for voice/facial recognition. Before, when my xbox would randomly turn itself off, start rewinding, go to the home screen, pause, etc. because the Kinect sensor was listening to my TV(I guess "it's just not so" sounds like "xbox, go home"), I could just unplug it! Now it's built in!
6.dynamic, daily game content additions to make you feel part of the game. Translation: Customized ads and product placement based on your browsing habits placed in your games. Turn up the volume or rewind a product commercial to see it again? Get a billboard in your favorite racing game for the same product.
7. New kinect sensor is bigger, boxier, uglier than ever before

unbelievable. Everything people were afraid of but wouldn't really admit because, c'mon, they are REALLY going to do that, that would be stupid....Yeah, they did it.

Couldn't have said it better. I can't wait to say I told you so to all the fan boys. I've seen this coming for a long time.

It's still pretty much a failure that's going to have the hardcore game buyers going to sony or waiting until this thing goes down 200 bucks.

I don't see the benefit of watching TV through the Xbox. I already have my directTV receiver that works perfectly fine and I don't see how now using two devices ( one of which will probably have a fan that sounds like a 747) is an improvement.

This is aimed at hipsters and teenagers who think it's trendy. I'm seriously ready to start a kickstarter for a cartridge based game system or a no frills system like the ps2.

So far I'm skipping it. There's absolutely no excuse not to be backward compatible. I can play PC games from 20+ years ago and they work. Also if it has to connect to the Internet at all, that's a deal breaker. If I want to connect the 360 to download something, I have to go physically connect it to the router because WIFI won't reach it.

It seems they've basically done all the stuff that people said would kill whichever console did it. Always-on (effectively, even if not technically "always"). And I think they're still being very shady about the used-game thing.. At first they were very clear that you would have to pay full price for a second "activation code" to install the game on another system, and then they turn around and say "there's no fee". So which is it? Current rumor is speculating that they're going to have some kind of proprietary digital-trade system built into Xbox Live. This is not going to end well for them.

And then there's the Kinect thing. "Xbox On". Sure, that's neat-o. But it also means that the Xbox has been listening to and processing every word I say in order to recognize and execute that command. So it's listening... is it watching, too? They've already said the Kinect is required for the system to function, period. I think my previous guess about it not working when covered will probably end up true as well.

I also find the whole "all in one" thing to be incredibly ironic, given that it doesn't actually fulfill that function in any way. It's not a receiver.. you'll still need your TV/cable/satellite box to pull a signal down. You'll still need your DVR to record TV shows. You'll still need your A/V receiver to process the sound and route various signals. The only thing this "all in one" box replaces is the previous Xbox, and maybe your Blu-ray player.

So far the only thing they're really failing at is addressing the rumours. They have conflicting comments from different staff. What they need to do is send out a report stating "this is the tumour" and then giving an actual answer. Half the articles on IGN right now are about the rumours that have been kicking around the last few months and different statements from different people.

How can you call it a failure when it was just announced Wes, are you relying on all your industry knowledge to back it all up?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the system at all. I'm not as blown away as I was hoping I'd be. I'm just saying, they barely showed off the system. Give em a chance to actually get their facts in order.

More like it's aimed at kids without a ton of disposable income to pay for a cable subscription, but who're willing to pay MS to access a bunch of stuff. but I agree that a lot of the bells and whistles are "nice but not necessary." I do happen to like the integration of things like Netflix, Xfinity, HBO GO, and such into my Xbox, but...I already have a 360 to do that. And a blu-ray player that can do that. And a TV that can do that. And I can get a Tivo to do that. And any number of other devices that can replicate a lot of the media center functions. So, I agree with you that there comes a point where you're left saying WHAT ABOUT THE GAMES?

From the sound of it, the always-on thing isn't required (but probably is nice to have if you want to do, you know, most things). I'm treating this like a MicroSoft OS upgrade. "Try new Windows 8000!" Eh....maybe after it gets a software base and you release a service pack or two.
