Indiana Jones 5 officially announced

To be fair, you are with a bunch of nerds that are now delving into speculation and the side discussion about Barbie and Hollywood helped.

But yeah, people are more interested in what could have been.
As far as I’m concerned, I‘m interested because that gives me some ideas in case I would incorporate a new story into the Indy universe.
Info like that would make it much easier.

Are they, though? Most of this thread is just memes, box office numbers discussion and conspiracy theories about what's wrong with the industry mixed in with weird takes about hidden agendas in modern pop culture.

I wish it was a conversation about what it could've been, because that's actually interesting. In fact, it's interesting with any movie, including bona fide classics. It's an opportunity to learn about storytelling choices, directors' visions, narrative structure, tonal approach, you name it. I mean this is a prop making/collecting forum, so I would've guessed people were into the intricacies of filmmaking and what goes on behind the scenes.

Wasn't Indy on the run for being framed for murder? How did that plotline get resolved? Seems like they just forgot about it. Or did I miss something?

Its completely glossed over. I heard there was a quick line that addresses it, but I couldn't find it doing a quick scan of the transcript.

This thread… 159 pages later.

There isnt that much stuff revealed since the movie has only just released. Unless we get some major leaks, we arnt going to get behind the scenes what was actually cut stuff or Spielberg's proposed scripts. Hell, we still dont have access to the ST treatments Lucas had supposedly handed to Iger in the Lucasfilm deal (or at least ones we can confirm are real).

Yeah most of the discussion was box office to assess if the movie was a failure and if so, by how much as well as analysis of why it went wrong, opinions on the film, etc. We did have some early discussion on what it should have been (just dont make it, just go full recast, different relic, etc.) that is mixed in the discussion.

Fair enough, although it is mixed in with so much tangential conversation it's hard to tell what the thread is about anymore.

As for actual info on the movie's development, I mean, I think Brockbank's concept art is pretty major and I'm amazed it got out at all. You can already get a rough idea of what the movie might have been about and good looks at specific scenes through it.

A screenplay draft would be the definitive piece, but I wonder if we'll ever get that. Draft leaks seem to follow a pattern of behind the scenes drama. With Star Wars there was the Episode IX script leak, and Indy 4 has not one but two old drafts out in the open: City of Gods and Saucermen from Mars. With both the Episode IX script and Frank Darabont's City of Gods draft (Saucermen is another question) there was always a sense of backstage frustration with those involved. I doubt that's the case with Indy 5's old drafts, which is perhaps a handicap. Something tells me Steven Spielberg and David Koepp could not care less what ever happened to that movie. But who knows, Koepp does have a website where he shares a ton of scripts for educational purposes, including unproduced ones. He is also still credited in the film, which means his draft must share enough details with the final movie... yet the final movie completely pisses over everything that his story for the previous film established. So it's an interesting context.

Yeah it's ironic that Koepp's name is still on Indy#5 considering how the movie shaped up. I can't picture him being very happy with it.

Probably because the final script still shares enough material with his drafts. We know Helena is his character, and the train sequence existed in some shape or form in what he wrote. The only reason Frank Darabont wasn't credited in Crystal Skull is most likely because Jeff Nathanson wrote yet another draft in between his and Koepp's, so his name must have gotten lost in arbitratrion, but anyone who's read City of Gods can tell it's pretty much Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in all but name.

The definitive review on the film, from one of the leading experts on the character, one of the pioneers who correctly identified pieces of the gear in the early days of the Indy Gear hobby, and a fellow RPF member!

I've been looking forward to Michael's review for months.

If anyone loves Indy, it's Michael French (nohandluke). To put it mildly, his review was thorough. Spoiler Alert: he didn't like the film and felt the Indy character was treated poorly. Whether or not you agree with Michael, at least he goes through the character and story beats to lay out his argument in a very logical, organized way. And he points out where you can see how the film was mish-mashed together.

I just watched the first hour of the film and haven't finished it yet, so no final judgement from me.

But one thing I did notice... I know that ford WANTED Indy to be old, past his prime, etc. But his voice is such a low "grumble" that half the time I had trouble "hearing" what Ford was saying. And the fact that they used Ford's current 80 year old voice for the YOUNG Indy scenes at the beginning was GLARING. Anthony Ingruber was a body double for Ford on Indy 5... and he also does a decent Ford impression. So why they just wouldn't have him (or another impersonator) dub Ford's voice with Ingruber's younger vocals is beyond me. It CAN'T be because of the expense, because they already dumped hundreds of millions into the film.

Lucasfilm might have worried about insulting Harrison to bring in somebody else to dub his younger voice.

IIRC they dubbed Harrison's voice onto Anthony Ingruber when they originally used him for that "Age of Adaline' movie.

Most likely, LFL figured that Harrison-doing-younger sounded at least somewhat younger than 80yo Harrison and that would cover it. People tend to underestimate the importance of vocals when it comes to acting.

IIRC the de-aged scenes were set in 1944. That puts Indy at about 45yo. Harrison was 50yo when he told Tommy Lee Jones "I didn't kill my wife!" and jumped off the dam. His voice never really sounded young after the 1970s.

Pushed play, saw that it was 4 hours long and then pushed stop.

There's a lot to cover because the movie is such a mess. It's the best researched video on the subject, both in terms of the adventure genre on film, the historical aspects of the movie, as well as the Indy franchise itself and its history. Michael also has a film degree, a journalism background, and a forensic attention to detail.

Like you said blewis17 even if you disagree with Michael's take, he breaks down his observations with careful consideration and dedicated research, like an investigative journalist would approach a story. This is film analysis at its absolute best.

Don’t all throw your tomatoes at once guys…

I watched it this weekend, I enjoyed it. Did the movie have its issues, hell yeah..

But after watching all the YouTube reviews I was expecting much worse..

My biggest problem, why too many chase scenes…

Love that dial prop and the whole idea of von Braun going back in time to try and take over
