Indian Jones Raiders of The Lost Ark - Staff of Ra

Does anybody know how the original Staff of Ra was made for Raiders of the Lost Ark? What processes were used and what materials? I am a student studying special effects model making and part of our newest module is to recreate an asset as authentically and accurately as possible.
