She's been a lesbian since they re-vamped the character, which actually was before the New 52. She showed up some on the Bat-stories, and was often featured in Detective Comics.
She was originally used sometime around the 50s, and was always angling to get Batman's attention. Her neice Betty tagged along as the first Batgirl.
I personally love the way they redesigned the new Batwoman, including her being gay and having a history with Renee Montoya.
I am all for creating diverse characters, but I agree that it would be better if they didn't make any character gay just for headlines.

There's no way it will be a member of the Justice League, probably will be a C-lister. I don't think DC has the stones to make a long-established A-List or B-List character gay.

martian manhunter can in fact not be gay. martians are all one and just communicate via their minds, they share everything, and have no secrets. therefor everyone can do everything. or lets say, he cant be our concept of gay. also, all martians look alike (male and female), alltho there are still green and white martians (with the white martians being "discriminated")

Typical of DC trying to get some of the spotlight that is clearly on Marvel these past few years. Instead of this big announcement, they could have just concentrated on current gay characters like Apollo and Midnighter of The Authority (which I think would make for an awesome feature film) or even Kate Kane, the current Batwoman.

I couldn't see it being batman. I mean he's hooked up with Selina Kyle, Talia Al Ghul, And 500 other randoms.
Batman, Superman, and Green Lantern are pretty much DC's leading men. If they were to turn any of those guys gay, the fans would crucify DC. It's not worth making all the fans gasp and then lose significant sales.
I could see them making Tim Drake gay.
