I Really WANT to Like Waterworld...

I start to get worried about my taste in movies when I see threads like this :confused

I love every single bit of Waterworld, and its one I've seen several times !!

... as I did the other 'thrash me to bits' threads like Avatar etc :lol

.... then again, I have the (good ? :confused) habit of just wanting to be entertained, without getting into the nitty-gritties too much :)

I used to pick at movies, plots etc, but not so much any more. Weird :rolleyes

All sentiments I can get behind, aside from the smileys.

I don't know what it is about this movie - I know it's garbage, but it's fun anyway.

Waterworld COULD be a sequal for the movie 2012....earth flooded, some mountains left, earths landmasses has shifted.

I have always been a fan of this movie - and I even understand its shortcomings. This is one of those big budget movies that has had a lot of haters over the years and yes, pretty much all of the arguments from the haters are very valid - however I do know what you mean when you say "I WANT to like it" because there are some movies I WANT to like, but there are too many things about it that take away from what would be an otherwise fantastic core.

I loved it even for all its problems..Actually saw it opening day and at that time it was super impressive visually,Been meaning to pick up that extended cut DVD to see what was left on the floor in the original cut.

I like it. There are some sci fi/ post apoc movies and shows that are put together well and make lots of sense. This isn't one of them. And that is ok. For me, it is in the same category as lots of zombie movies and horror movies I love,... if you think about them too hard, nothing really works or makes any sense. But if you take it with a grain of salt, it can still be a lot of fun.

One of the mind-blowingly illogical things that got me about it was the underwater city scene.

The Earth was 75% water. So if you dive down at random you only have a 1 in 4 chance of hitting what was dry land.

Then, how much of that dry land was covered by cities? 1%, MAYBE?

But Costner dives right down to the middle of a city.

(shakes head)

The Waterworld stunt show at Universal Studios is pretty good. :)

:thumbsup Absolutely is! The stunts are great, a lot of the talent are actual working actors that you probably recognize, the costumes are great too and you're getting a real treat with a 'live production' happening in front of you. Whenever I get the chance and catch a visit out there these days, it's one of my 'must sees' at Universal.

Any sci-fi movie has glaring plot holes, just imagine it's an alternate universe where nothing has to make sense! ;D
And ditto on the Universal Studios Waterworld Show. I'ts been the same for a really long time and is still cool.

Like most movies of this type I was more interested in the past of the world in the film and what it must have been like during the flooding and early years after it happened than the actual movie. The novel had a bit more in it and explains a few things in the scene when he takes her to the city ruins that wasn't directly explained but still didn't fulfill my curiosity. I also always wanted to know the story of that submarine that's sitting in the city ruins. That sucker musta been sailing for a long while unless the flooding was sudden.

Actually that's my problem with most post apocalyptic movies: the how and why are better than the story taking place. Guess that's why i like the Day After: you get to see events unfold.

If you're interested in the story of a world that's slowly flooding, read Flood by Stephen Baxter. It follows several people's lives as the world floods over 25 years. Interesting. There's a sequel, too.
