Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Common Room in progress

Re: Hogwarts in my Home

Potion Mistress, thanks - just going nuts on it for now to keep momentum going because it's such a big project with some tedious parts. Switching between bits of it helps to keep it interesting too!

Most of the fireplace is just styrofoam insulation sheets over a basic wood support (got the sheets at home depot) but for the places like where I built out the sides for the angle and the corbel underneath where I needed a thicker chunk I just cut the sheets into smaller pieces, glued those together to make a block, and shaped it from there.

And you are right,, it's just a paint effect for the holes on the cabinet. I thought about drilling them out (still could do it later on) but because it's just a thin Ikea door, fakery probably works as well or better :)

Re: Hogwarts in my Home

Ok, still needs a little touching up and a coat of varnish to stop the acrylic rubbing off, but we're definitely not in Ikea anymore!

Grimstitch,
I am in LOVE with your project!!! :love It is going very well and I am impressed with your resourcefullness. I am inspired how you are using what you have available and making it look like something awesome!!! Thank you so much for sharing your prgress pics :)

Re: Hogwarts in my Home

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

I am in LOVE with this!!! I am such a Potter nerd! I joined this site with the intention of getting ideas and help for my husband and sons' costumes, but it never occurred to me that I'd find stuff to interest me as well!! I can't wait to see what your final project looks like!

Also, loved the "it's actually for me" comment. My 6 year old is having a HP birthday this year because he decided that's what he wants, but let's be honest. I'm probably enjoying all of the favors and decorations and games and stuff way more than he is! :D

Re: Hogwarts in my Home

:) Thank you for the feedback everyone! Glad you're enjoying this too, it keeps me motivated! I did a bit more work over the weekend - more on the foam "castle" walls, found a little table that should work in there, and tried to find solutions for a few other things. What I haven't shown yet is that this space currently only has two solid walls. The rest of the basement is only partially finished (back in the sixties I think!) so one end of this room is open to our rec/tv area and the opposite side from the "fireplace" is only a row of open storage shelving hung with curtains that divides it from the furnace, problematic to say the least.

There is also an exposed ceiling (good) with lots of duct work and wires (bad) but I'm trying some things to make it work. First of all, since I just have to work around them, I painted out the metal ducts and wires in brown faux wood finish to blend with the wood and be less noticeable - moderately succesful. Here's a pic - ignore the white cords, they will aso be hidden somehow. You can also see my makeshift gryffindor chandelier made out of a candle holder, battery tealights, and a plant chain. ;)

Re: Hogwarts in my Home

The new progress covering the cinder block on the walls and framing out the window. Next step is to add rock texture and mark out the rest of the stones.

Re: Hogwarts in my Home

Also, because I am apparently a crazy person, and it is by far the most economical option, I decided to take those curtain panels that I already had and brush them with red paint as a fabric base to recreate the tapestries. Yes, I will have to paint all the patterns by hand !!! but maybe I can make some foam stamps to help repeat the small botanical bits. I will update my progress on this later - hope it's not too ambitious.

Re: Hogwarts in my Home

And here's one of my possibly bonkers ideas for the wall that I essentially have to construct - most of it I am just going to leave the open shelves as is and hang the tapestries and portraits on top, the cabinet I made will also cover part of the open area at the end nearest the window, BUT, and here's the bonkers part, I'm also going to try to fake the dormitory stair opening. Like a backdrop painting - it might work!!! So far I've nailed up a few mdf boards on the shelves, painted them in black and free hand painted in a few details of the stairs. unfortunately I think I painted it a bit too far up on the board (too much window will be covered by the arch) so I'll likely have to paint over and restart . Not the end of the world, so far only took 20 mins or so. Will update as it comes! :)

Grimstitch,

Just Brilliant!!! I don't what I am enjoying the most, looking at all the progress pictures or hearing about all the ingenious ways you are using everday items and materials to make very realistic props!!! Thanks again for sharing :)

Re: Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Tower Themed Room

Just checking in to say that I haven't given up or forgotten you guys! Not much of an update because I had a busy week, but I did do some more detailing on the foam walls and sketched out the Gryffindor crest to scale for the fireplace. I'm still weighing my options on a method to make it 3D. I don't have the supplies to do a resin cast or anything like that, so I was thinking of trying a sculpt in air dry clay or perhaps drywall compound? If I had a hot wire cutter I'd try foam, but alas I do not, so think I'll try the other methods first. The experiment continues! :D

Very ambitious, but you're pulling it off. Great job.
