Potion Mistress, thanks - just going nuts on it for now to keep momentum going because it's such a big project with some tedious parts. Switching between bits of it helps to keep it interesting too!
Most of the fireplace is just styrofoam insulation sheets over a basic wood support (got the sheets at home depot) but for the places like where I built out the sides for the angle and the corbel underneath where I needed a thicker chunk I just cut the sheets into smaller pieces, glued those together to make a block, and shaped it from there.
And you are right,, it's just a paint effect for the holes on the cabinet. I thought about drilling them out (still could do it later on) but because it's just a thin Ikea door, fakery probably works as well or better
