HELP! Glue all over Acrylic Display Case!

Hey there,

Can anybody help?

I don't know how it got there, or what it is, but there seems to be some sort of sticky glue all over one of my Acrylic display cases.

Whatever it is, is quite tough, yet still tacky. I scrubbed a spot with toilet paper for about 30 minutes and managed to get a tiny splodge off.

The case is covered in the stuff. Is there any sort of cleaner that can safely be used on UV resistant acrylic without damaging it?

thanks for any help

you might want to try Goof-Off

I know it's safe for acrylic, but try using it on a test area or piece of acrylic first to see if it causes any hazing

Try IPA Iso-propyl-alcohol (spelling!!?!??) Put a bit on a paper towel and rub it lightly in a circular motion, Hopefully it'll shift it, good luck!!!

Zippo lighter fluid won't melt acrylic (in fact it should be safe on styrene and ABS - test first though). I use it all the time for removing doublesided tape residue. I use the tape for holding acrylic or styrene down for machining.

Before you go crazy and ruin your cases try something simple like Simple Green or 409. A simple grease cutter might work well.

If you live in a smoking enviroment then the substance is tar or nicotine and 409 will cut it well!

Yes and stuff like rubbing alcohol that is cheap: buy several bottles and soak it.
I'd try alcohol, WD-40, lighter fluid, goo gone, goof off, Pine-sol, bleach, mineral spirits, paint thinner, acetone -- in that order.
Hopefully you never get to the acetone. Try any of the harsher chemicals on a spot first (from goo gone onwards) and don't rub it a lot with any tissue, you'll just scrach it.
Get a microfiber cloth or try soft cotton, while wet. Think of this like a camera lens. If none of that works or does and you do scratch it, the novus polish is your friend with the aforementioned microfiber.
:cry
Good luck!

Go and get a piece of scrap plexi first, put glue on it, then try out all these tips before you put something on your case. I suggest goof off too, that doesn't seem to hurt plastic in my experience.

Yeah, Goof Off has worked miracles for me.
All good suggestions here.
Any idea what the stuff is?

Umm, maybe a dumb question, but did you try the world´s least toxic solvent ? Water ? And after that maybe spit ? Yes, spit, and before someone tries to ridicule me, spit is used by professional restorators to remove grime, grease and other unknown substances from valuable art because of the amount of enzymes in it.

In combination with that you might want to use a microfibre cloth on the soiled areas because of its "abrasiveness". It can happen that the microfibre leaves microscratches on the acrylic, but those can be easily polished out.

If you tried those, I´d slowly start to work my way up on the toxidity and agressiveness scale. Going up is simple, but going down after melting your acrylic case away... well, self explanatory, I guess ;)

Good luck !
