Harry Potter Golden Snitch - Size of screen used prop

I am trying to create a replica Golden Snitch. I have read all the Snitch related threads on the forum and it appears that the CoolFX Snitch is the most accurate version available. I was wondering if anybody who owns one of these would be kind enough to measure it for me? I have had a look at this thread which does state the diameter as 1.25" but after holding a sphere of this size I think it is a tad small. In the books a Snitch is about the size of a walnut. Having measured a few walnuts I believe that the actual size should be closer to 1.375" (Halfway between 1.25" and 1.5"). The "sticker" snitch is around 1.5" - a bit too big I think. Here is a photo for scale:

What I would really appreciate is if somebody who owns a CoolFX snitch could please confirm the diameter for me?

You need to clear up something first, Is it a replica of the Movie snitch you wanna make or a Book snitch? Props built for movies sometimes don't stick as close to the book.

My Snitch, which I believe is a CoolFX version, is about 1.375".. I don't have calipers to be able to give you exact.. Remember, movie props are different than the book versions..

My only reason for referencing the books is the assumption that the production designers on the movie would have used the books as a starting point for their design. Thanks Beechy McFly for confirming the size for me!

Hi Gekko15,

I've been working on a Snitch as well. I agree with you that 1-1/4 inch diameter seems a little small, but I opted to use 1-1/2 inch because locally, pre-made wooden balls of that size are commercially available. My plan is to draw the “lines” on the sphere, cut a shallow groove with a Dremel and fill with an appropriate gauge copper wire. I'd then have to smooth it all out with filler and primer, and then apply a gold finish. Here's where I've been practicing this on a second ball:

The small gold ball is a 5mm plated bead, for the wing attachment. I have some other design ideas to for the wings, if you’re interested.

Kenobi, that is the coolest idea I've seen!
I never thought of making them that way.

I'd love to see a thread based on that to see your progress! Definitely going to have to give that a try when my degree is over and I have some free time to make some new props.
...might need to do a few runs since my precision Dremel skills are rather lacking.

Keen to see how it turns out!

would be interested to watch this project too,I have some ideas, especially about hte wings, but I would fond informations about the ball itself, and find some good pics of the wings structure.
WOuld be possible to make some photo etching,or very fine soldering, then, gold plating.

Hi guys - I posted some pictures of my progress in another snitch thread (here) if you want to go and have a look. Sadly it is slow going!
