Handmade 1.7m Stargate - "Where there's a will there's an 'or'"

Update:

Over the last few days we have been frantically working to get all 39 symbols cut and finished. We have developed tennis elbow and our backs will never be the same again :) but we have just finished them all.

Finding decent images from the show of each symbol has been a nightmare! a fellow Stargate fan over on Gateworld who has visited the sets sent me some fantastic photos, these combined with endlessly watching the series eventually allowed us to archive each symbol.

I intially thought about using one of the fonts you can download online, however after comparing them to the actual symbols... they were very inaccurate.

We now have no finger prints left so we can start our lives in crime, photo update soon.

Doh, if only Legends would have sent out the blueprints from their last round auctions.... I'm still waiting on them.... I'll have the 24x32 blueprint for the glyphs! I still haven't decided if I'm going to sell the top/lower duplicate prints that I'll have or keep them.

When I win the lottery ill commission a full sized gate :)

Any chance we could see a sample of your glyphs cheech? How much would you sell them for? :) I dont think anyone could make a 100% accurate gate without detailed plans.

I don't have the glyph print yet. I've paid for that auction but Angie @ Legends hasn't shipped them yet (i've gotten no email notification from Canada Post). I can see about getting a scan of the glyphs to you once I get the print in.

I've only gotten a basic start in turbocad, but I've started redrawing the prints. I'm wanting to make a computer background that has the full front view of the gate w/ a partial side view, glyphs spaced out around the edges, & some explanation type text in Ancient. Maybe if screencaps will allow try and draw the gate capacitor Carter was messing with (season 9 I think). I'll have to try to calc the outer part of the gate thickness from screenshots & based on my actual gate pieces. LT from SG6/Stargate-command.net had a print that showed a side view of the SGC gate, but he's long dissappeared & those sites are gone so there's no way to contact him to see about getting a copy of it.

the Glyphs are easy :)

imported into my cad programme and cnc milled them on my machine

That would be great cheech, if you could let me know when you manage to get your hands on them I would love a copy!

Regarding the font, after grabbing stills from the show alot of the glyphs arnt very show accurate. From the a-n image you posted, c, h and i are very different, m isnt bad. The earth symbol from that font is also different from the show prop.

We have now cast all 9 sections, nearly all of the chevrons have been cast. We are finishing off the transparent bits and painting this weekend. Images this weekend, promise :)

you have to look around for the right fonts, some have more accurate glyphs then others, it took me a while to collect all of them :)

and I have seem differences with glyphs on some gate images !

.

The circle is now complete :) We still need to add a bit of filler where the 9ths dont perfectly match up, but that shouldnt take long.

Painting this weekend.

That would make a hell of a coffee table! Put clear glass in the center and do a clear acrylic with blue dye casting for the vortex effect.

All i have to say is wow! The detail and scale are amazing and the time alone put in to it seems unreal. Looking forward to seeing it fully done:)

Out-freakin'-standing! Have you figured out the "water" effect yet, or are you simply planning to use this as a decorative mirror frame?

Still not finished, starting to get beyond a joke now :)

We managed to get the base coat sprayed at the weekend. Im glad you guys like it, more a dinning room table than a coffee table, its enormous!

We dont have plans for any event horizon, just fix it to the wall. I keep saying this :) but we hope to get it finished within the next few weeks, however we have a few holidays coming up so we'll have to see.

I congratulate the pair of you on the excellent work you have produced it must rate as the prop of the year well done

That's amazing. Now here's what you do. You add a small nook onto the room you're going to display this in, and put it some kind of small pool in the bottom of the nook with lights inside it, like a mini spa. The you hang this up in front of it with a very large mirror at a 45 degree angle, reflecting the surface of the water up into the gate. It'll take home renovation and a lot of money, plus some kind of filter system, but it's just about the only way to make water stand up.

Once again, that looks awesome.

Fantastic work! Outstanding, even!

Might I suggest my idea for an event horizon:

Mirror in the back, covered by a teal transparent plastic sheet, which in turn is covered by a clear soft plastic sheet, possibly warped irregularly (using heat from a hair-dryer or something)

I think it would look good enough (at least in my mind) but seeing the high standard of the Stargate itself, such an event horizon might not quite live up to the rest of it...
