Handmade 1.7m Stargate - "Where there's a will there's an 'or'"

Being a massive Stargate fan I've wanted a gate to sit on my wall for years, couldn't buy one so I had to make one.

I'd been planning this for ages but never got anywhere until I got together with my girlfriend, Angua (she's registered aswell but I dont think she has posted yet). She'd done some model making at university and showed me how it could be done, what materials to use and that it was possible to do it without any machinery at all. Our gate is entirely made by hand!

We've been working on it for, oh ages now... my lovely girlfriend has done more on it than I have, all the fiddily bits : ) but it has been a joint project from the start.

We hope to get it finished in time for the release of Continuum next month so look out for more updates over the next few weeks. We're heading out of London in 4 weeks time to resin cast the 9 sections... fingers crossed it all fits!

The size was partially dependant on how we made it, we couldnt make it any smaller due to the stupid amount of detail on the gates surface and the fact that this all had to be hand made (I honestly think they couldnt have picked a more rediculous shape). Thats why its 1.7m diameter... plus a near 2m Stargate on the wall will look awesome! : )

You can see how we made it from a few photos I've posted.

I 3D modeled it in Maya, exploded it so that we could print it off and here you can see us putting in the initial framework. The maths involved in printing off the curved circular pieces flat was a whole side project in itself (good job Angua had also done further maths at A-level!).

After much experimenting we found the only way to do the detail was stamping into Sculpty Clay - my idea! : )

Even then we found we had to create each of these hoop details as individualy stamped units, then painstakingly mount them onto a back board before afixing them to the base.

Our multi coloured gate : ) Angua hand carved one of the square details from 4mm plastic card which was then cast in resin multiple times.

Big leap! lots of work in between but as you can see we are working on the final touches, the chevron and symbols (nightmare!)

Makes me want to hum the theme tune : )

Stay tuned!

:D

Great, GREAT work so far!;)

Looking great and the details are so crisp and clean. Looking forward to seeing how it goes

Thanks guys, its been such a great project to work on!

As soon as Angua saw your reply Ramiel her first reaction was 'dont give him ideas' : ) Id love a full size one but quarter scale is big enough I think : ) The gate is 20cm wide so hopefully that will give you an idea of how big its going to be.

After alot of experimentation we decided thats the only way it could be done Xeno, the outer ring is coming along nicely... the detailing is being done in a similar fashion to the chevron base.

Its funny, over the course of construction weve given names to each part of the gate... the zigzags, pills, hoops, large squares, chevron base... I find myself calling them that in this thread like thats what they have always been called : )

Ill post some more photos in a few days.

Update:

A busy weekend working on the gate, I made the back piece while my girlfriend tided up and adjusted the chevron / chevron base. We are planning on spraying another coat of primer tomorrow once the new pieces are glued on. 2 weeks and counting : )

I'm uploading to photobucket a bunch of stargate stuff that may be of use to you for detailing the gate. I've never gotten around to putting together a proper gallery webpage, but there are some shots of screen used pieces of the Continuum 'gate. Including detail shots of the inner ring edge where the event horizon would form. I'm talking with someone that works with at an architectural firm to see if he can get those blueprints scanned to a digital file for me too.

I have to say the gate is looking amazing, the details are so crisp and clean. This is a thread i love to see updated:D

Some nice stuff there cheech! Thanks for sharing them. I remember missing out on one of those neck pieces by a couple of hours. If you ever want to get rid of a piece let me know:p

I agree, amazing work on the gate. It's looking far more detailed than prevous attempts. I wish I had better modeling skill to build fully from scratch like that. I'ed love to see a gate that size that has both sides finished & was on a small 'gate step' base like how most of the off-world gates were.

Kwalsh0000, if you want to copy those Jaffa Armor pics to the Jaffalegions board gallery you can. I've got one of those fiberglass serpent heads that were offered in the junkyard awhile back. I hope to make a statue display at some point. I really want to try to make a jaffa costume, but do the jaffa armor out of tooling/vegatable leather for durability sake.
